You are correct, you cannot deny the professionalism of the whole operation, Backed by some of the finest musicians around, The Kami Band, and a top-notch sound engineering crew, which you pretty much find at any Japanese venue concert. And to think that the girls started working on this in 2010 when Su was 13 and Yui and Moa were 11. And Su's voice is just kick-ass and not atypical for an Asian singer. They brought an entirely new genre to metal and have become a huge hit globally.

You know, my whole life I have always kind of gotten crap for my choice in music. I love metal, country, rock, shoot I like bands like Guster and Dave Matthews Band. That's a preface for saying my taste is random AF. However, lately I really have noticed my tastes for media, both video and music, has been shifting. I really enjoy Korean media and Japanese media and getting to know these different media styles, I have really fallen in love with the anime style metal music. Not related, but I have also really been digging Polyphia. I guess what I am saying is. While it may not be for everyone, it's really ok to enjoy it. It's frigging cool. Plus, it makes me feel like my head will just turn into a chainsaw and I can rip through demons.(chainsaw man reference, I'm an adult don't knock till you watch it, it's very metal!) lol like being able to daydream you are in a manga... anyway I'm stoned medicinal 420

That was the last song of a full 90 minute show and trust me, they didn't slow down for a single moment. The video doesn't show the 4 minutes or so before the final shots where the girls went to each side and kept chanting "We are!" whilst the band went full ham all the time.

I always love when reactors react to Road Of Resistance.... there's always that "Is that little girl really calling for a wall of death" in the beginning.... And then you see the "oh shit" look when they realize that a 5'2" Asian girl called for, and got a big ass wall of death/mosh pit, is hilarious. Love the sing a long part with the fans... I think they added that part in just to give the drummer a break before his legs fall off. 🤣🤣🤣🤘🦊🤘

Some fun facts: This song was written as a collab with Dragonforce's Sam and Herman. The Kami band really killed it. But they were only at 75% power. If you want to hear them going full speed. Check out the Su-Metal solo song "Amore". Another thing of note. The crowd. They have their own Choreo. Usually directed by Moa and Yui. Su also has a few moments depending on the song where she directs them as well. If you want to see the wildest crowd experience check out the song "Headbanger" Live @ Legend Metal Galaxy day2 2020.

Su has the most intense 'death metal' stare. Great crowd control. Imagine being her kid getting in trouble. Mom's death metal stare sends eye daggers at you telling you the jig is up.

Great reaction. As you read, this video was from January 2015 at the Saitama Super Arena. Su was 17, Yui and Moa only 15 and that was over 20,000 people completely under their control. Even at that age Su just looks at the crowd, spreads her arms and the crowd opens up for a wall of death (actually several walls of death at that concert as the crowd were in sections. A journalist up in the balcony that night said he counted, I think it was, 21 mosh pits).
This was also the end of a 90 minute concert and yes, they had been keeping that same energy up without any drop in quality for the whole time. It is what they do - they appreciate people have often paid a lot of money and travelled a long way to see them, they never give anything less than 100% for every song at every concert, whether that is one of their big arena concerts in Japan or at the many various sized venues as they tour the world.
About the song itself - 'Road of Resistance' is a very positive song, it isn't the usual "resist the machine or the system etc" that we might expect from the title. It is about forging your own road even where a road doesn't already exist, not necessarily going the easy way or following the path already made by somebody else, so if the way you want to go has never been trodden you may have to get past the resistance of the undergrowth, obstacles, hurdles and things blocking your way etc to find your own way.
It could easily be used to describe BABYMETAL's own story - they could have followed the well trodden path of J-Pop and been very successful, but they chose to go with Metal ... but again they didn't just follow the same old format of every other metal band, they have done it their own way and it hasn't always been an easy route to follow.
Herman Li and Sam Totman from the British power/speed metal band DragonForce did the guitar arrangements for this song (it is the only one they were involved in) and recorded the guitars for the album version.
The studio version is shorter - this had a very extended sing-along section as it was the first time they'd played it at a big show in Japan and, as this was the official video, they actually cut that outro short by at least a couple of minutes - the girls went to each different side of the stage to shout "We are ... BABYMETAL" with as many of the audience as they could get near to.

    5:05 Reaction start.
    Welcome back to the Foxhole.🦊🤘🔥
Glad you're back with this suggestion and enjoyed this like fans are enjoying this recently live at Sabaton's Europe Tour in every night of the concerts.
_Road Of Resistance_ is a power/speed metal song, is one of their most epic anthem and the album version got the guitar arrangements made by Sam Totman and Herman Li from DragonForce, and is all about facing your own path without looking back.
The wall of death is nuts just like you noticed, is also called "mosh'sh pit", different from usual mosh pit because this one is safe to participate if you fall everyone will stop until you get up and get ready to keep going with the fun ride.
This was part of the Trilogy Of 2015 series of concerts, live at New Year Fox Festival - Saitama Super Arena, is the last song of the encore they performed and finishing the show. By this time their fame was already high due to viral success on YT of Gimme Chocolate! MV, people from all over the world attended this live concert in Japan, and 20K souls witnessed this epic moment.
With only 15 and 17 years old this moment will be forever remember when they performing this song to reminds them all the support they got from their fans no matter where they go, either a small or big stages.
The Kami Band here are magnificent set of elite musicians who were send to help the girls with the metal sound, they rotate so probably you won't see some of them in all live concerts (specially the guitarrists), all of them are males.
BM fans love some members of this band but none of them are official members of this group not even permanent, they only play live, so when you heard album tracks remember they aren't playing there.
    In this case they are:
    - Leda Cygnus, god of guitar, he's the only Kami Band member who's credited as a session musician when recording certain songs.
    - Takayoshi Ohmura, god of guitar, he's Míkio' Fujioka's pupil (another beloved Kami Band guitarist who sadly past away) and a prodigy child, you'll see his recognizable pink guitar or golden in other moments.
    - BOH, god of bass, he's the bald one and not only got amazing talent but her fun way to enjoy reminds me Flea from RHCP.
    - Hideki Aoyama, god of drums, he comes from a family of expert drummers, and his father is very famous in Japanese music scene.
At the end of their shows they always said "We are BabyMetal!" with the crowd, to making them sure that they're part of this show and project too, is a line borrowed to X-Japan saying it at live concerts too.
If you like this type of metal genre then you're gonna love another previous song from first album called *"Ijime Dame Zettai"* live at Sonisphere Festival 2014 and witness a precious and epic moment on their career. You can find that clip in the official channel but just be careful coz sometimes is getting blocked issues.
Another suggestion safe to react is:
    - _Headbanger!!_ live at Legend 1997 held in 2013, you can find a clip safe to react at Gans Tomas channel under "Head Bangya" title.
Thanks for sharing this and hopefully this won't be blocked
    See you next time! 🦊🤘🔥

What I have noticed from watching thousands of Babymetal reaction videos is that reactors, who are musicians, producers or anyone with a role in producing a performance (show) are always complimentary of the group. There has bern none of these petty comments like they sound so "poppy" or they don't play their own instruments so they are not legit BS. For true professionals in any performative art production, the talent and hard work that these girls/ladies pour in their show is obvious. We are so lucky to have witnessed this amazing experiment. There will never be another Babymetal.

    Another excellent reaction, thanks!
I just checked it out and this song starts at 1h 25m point on the Blu-ray track. And their intensity is crazy at that point of the show, after a really demanding performance.
Seeing Su putting the chants back in tempo is pure gold. She was just 17 at the time and already a seasoned performer. It helps having click tracks and clues on their IEM.
This MW was took directly from a Blu-ray production and they just cut short the extended outro. That also means that they may add harmonizing tracks on post production (it's very usual).
They are insanely good at live performances. It's almost unbelievable, but it's a fact.
    Until next time! 🤘🦊

Some clarification regarding the guys in skeleton costumes and the actual musicians in the white robes. The guys in the skeleton costumes are called "Babybones" and they were used in the early part of Babymetal's career 2010-2013 when Babymetal hadn't yet gotten big enough to justify management funding a full live band for their performances.
Starting in 2012, the live backing band, known as the Kami Band (God/spirit band) was introduced, mixing in performances with Babybones, depending on what event they were playing at. From 2014 onwards, Babybones was retired, and the Kami Band took over fully and they have played at all of Babymetal's live performances since then. Although the lineup of Kami Band varies depending on who is available, there are a group of performers who appear very often in the lineup, they are; Mikio Fujioka (guitars; sadly passed away in 2018), Takayoshi Ohmura (guitars), Leda Cygnus (guitars), Isao Fujita (guitars), BOH (bass), Hideki Aoyama (drums). The band for this performance at "Legend 2015 - The New Year Fox Festival" was Leda Cygnus, Takayoshi Ohmura, BOH, Hideki Aoyama.
Since 2019, there has also been a band made up of American musicians, who perform as the Kami Band for Babymetal's European and US tours, including the current European tour. They are CJ Masciantonio (guitars), Chris Kelly (guitars), Clint Tustin (bass), and Anthony Barone (drums). Because there are now two Kami bands, fans tend to refer to them as the Kami Band of the East (Japanese musicians) and the Kami Band of the West (American musicians).
Dragonforce have been longtime supporters of Babymetal and have helped them along on their journey on several occasions. In 2015 they snuck Babymetal into Download festival in the UK and gave up some of their set time to allow Babymetal to perform "Gimme Chocolate" (with Dragonforce filling in for the Kami Band). The popularity of this performance led to Babymetal being invited to play Download the following year, despite the promoter previously saying Babymetal would never play Download. They also stepped in and performed with Babymetal at the Metal Hammer Golden Gods Awards 2015 with Babymetal when the Kami Band could not make the trip to America for the awards show.
Babymetal also have a friendly relationship with Bring Me The Horizon, who they have toured with in the UK and Japan on several occasions, and who they collaborated with on the BMTH song, "Kingslayer". When Babymetal went on their first tour outside Asia to the UK in 2014, BMTH made sure that they felt welcome at their first UK festival at Sonisphere (which would go on to be one of the most important shows of their career).

Su is harmonizing with herself on backing track in some parts of this song (I think). Su has a pretty wide range. She is in her fierce mode on this one not her cutesy J-Pop mode. Moa and Yui are harmonizing with her also on certain parts.

  • @AnOldYoungGuy
    @AnOldYoungGuy Рік тому +18

Moa and Yui (the dancers) do some vocals, but most of the harmonizing you hear is a pre-recorded vocal track. It's not to take anything away from Su's live vocals, but just to add depth to the melodies, and perhaps to keep the sound of the studio album as close as possible.

Thanks from Japan 有難う💛。 [ Congrats! BABYMETAL will go on co-headliner North American tour with DETHKLOK in August through October (26 concerts + 3 festival appearance in 23 US states + 2 Canadian provinces) ]
The crowd involvement (mosh pit, call & response, chant etc.) occurs wherever they go on this planet. American fans also did it in every show in their 2019 US tour (20 gigs). In your video, Su shouted some words at 14:15 meaning "Bring them on!". Fans analyzed that the provocative shout was thrown at people who had been ignoring, underrating, mocking, hating and even trying to discredit BABYMETAL. That shout may have been necessary in 2015 but not any longer. She shouted it rarely since then or she does it smilingly with her friendly voice now. The girls have grown up into beautiful ladies. The maturity has added more attractiveness to this band. Please react to videos including recent ones to explore BM more.

Prople in the West doesn't understand Japanese entertainment industry. Western people assume everyone in a Band should all play instrument. It's not always the case in Japan.
Take my all time favourite band called "fripSide" as an example, they started as a Dual, one is a singer, the other is song writer and composer. After they became popular, they would hire session musicians for studio and concerts. After they grew really big, some sessional musicians became the constant members. However, in front of the media, it is always the Dual, even though every fans know the backing musicians very well. And, some of the backing musicians have stock to the Dual for almost 10 years. Yes, the Dual called themselves a band, and we called them a band. Babymetal is similar to this band. YOASOBI is another rising Dual, very popular worldwide, not sure if they will grow into a conventional band or not.
Idol culture just dominated the entertainment industry of Japan for decades before Babymetal established. The success of Babymetal was not only attracting people come to listen metal music, but also encouraged Japanese female musicians to form a conventional rock band or even a metal band. Before Babymetal, I would say any female band would be overlooked and not blessed in Japan. I hope this will explain a bit how Japanese entertainment industry works.

Keep in mind, she was only 17 at that time too, but she already had that much power and control over the crowd. In terms of intensity, the main singer can keep that intensity easily, but one of the dancer's, Moametal, would not be able to keep that intensity. You see in the beginning when they were supposed to keep intensity, she actually DOES flash that famous smile of hers at the end. Anyhow, you're correct, the band itself is actually just the 3 girls, however, they do allow the musicians have the spotlight now and then too. The three girls are named Yuimetal, Moametal, and Su-Metal. Su is the main singer and will always have the hand mic. Moa and Yui don't have hand mics as they do the majority of the dancing and running around, but do have the handsfree mics as you pointed out. At this age, Moa and Yui look pretty similar and many people have trouble telling them apart, So Moa will the be the one with the huge dimples in her cheeks when she smiles while Yui has the chubby baby cheeks, also Yui has thicker hair. Su-Metal will always have her hair done in a pony tail while Yui and Moa will have their hair done in pigtails. In 2017/2018 Yui left the band for health reasons. To fill the void Babymetal brought in 3 girls to take turns doing the choreo (but not singing) that Yui performed. They named these girls, the Avengers. When you're reacting to Babymetal songs, if you see a girl with no face-mic and she has neither pigtails, nor a ponytail, but instead has little hair buns where the pigtails would have been and the rest of her hair is down, then you're looking at an avenger. Also, I don't know if you noticed, but Su's outfit is slightly different than Moa's and Yui's, and the avengers, again, have a slightly different outfit as well. In April of this year, Babymetal announced they had a fulltime replacement for Yui. This replacement ended up being one of the avengers. Her name is Momoko. Now she is known as Momometal. Momo now has her hair down in pigtails and has a face-mic like Moa and sings now too. She has a nice voice and it lends itself well in harmonies with Moa's voice and Su's voice.
Another thing you're going to learn is that Babymetal songs are quite different from one another. As I'm sure you noticed, this song is quite different from Gimmie Chocolate. Get used to that. Each song is pretty unique to each other. It is kind of nice as you don't really get bored of this band, and I think that song individuality plays a big role in that. Anyhow, great reaction, looking forward to more Babymetal reactions!

    Thanks for this reaction.
Babymetal, is not your average metal band, but it also allows them to do things no other metal band would do.
Babymetal has regular session musicians for live performances, but they currently have both a western (western musicians) and eastern (Japanese musicians) live band.
And they've performed at big shows in Japan with both bands playing at the same time for the last song.
Yes, the guitar parts of Road of Resistance were writen by the guitarists of Dragonforce. Dragonforce also ones performed this song live with the ladies of Babymetal at an award show.
Funny thing is: Herman Li of Dragonforce in an interview mentioned: Road of Resistance is faster than some of our songs ! And they never expected to have to play it live.
6:27 "not her first rodeo", but it might very well be for the crowd, because this was only the 3rd time this was performed live, the song wasn't released yet. It was performed in the UK ones and at a fan-club small venue in Japan and then this show.
At times when Babymetal perform, Yuimetal and Moametal (who are not the lead singer and thus do a lot of dancing) choose to have some of their voices in a song be handled by a backing track, it differs by setlist, even show/venue, etc. In might also be related to how hard it is to capture their singing (again also depending on venue), because their microphones are uni-directional, so they can pick up a lot of background noise and becomes hard to mix.
10:32 one reactor said in the slower section after the very fast section: "ohh, they take a break after that !" :-)
This was a 16 song setlist, the last 3 songs were the encore.
Yes ! Babymetal is an experience, very good. That is exactly what they are aiming for.
Babymetal actually has a song called: Arkadia
PS Hope your band does well as well.

I'm glad you cam back for another reaction. If you continue your journey down the fox hole, you will see BabyMetal's music covers all types of Genres. Some may be more poppy like Give Me Chocolate, then you run into a power metal song like this. Road of Resistance is a song about forging your own path, not necessarily the easiest one. The guitar arrangement for this song was written by Herman Li and Sam Totman of Dragonforce. I laught with in the original comments for this song one user said he had to pause the video just to give the drummer a break :) .

In the shinto religion pretty much everything has its 'Kami'. Recall maybe 'Kami-kazi' or 'Spirit Wind'.
If you're interested Shinto is: "A polytheistic and animistic religion, [that] revolves around supernatural entities called the kami. The kami are believed to inhabit all things, including forces of nature and prominent landscape locations. The kami are worshipped at kamidana household shrines, family shrines, and jinja public shrines."

The concept was included in the book and series 'Shogun' without the need for further explanation. Consider for a moment the idea of a God of the forest (Faun?) and how that entity is distinct from a 'spirit of the forest' (ie. a collective nature spread across all things of the forest).
I have this hatred of the assumption that people can't understand simple concepts that are foreign to us. It dumbs everything down to the point where a whole population completely misunderstands foreign cultures (as here) and perpetuates misrepresentations of what are really quite simple differences.

Edit: UA-cam yeeted my original post after an edit to change something.
DragonForce is on the album, but the live is of course played by the Kami band.
The eastern Kami band are session musicians, but they have been a stable lineup for as long as they were officially hired as the Kami band, except when Fujioka Mikio, one of the guitarists passed away in 2018 from falling off a platform while star gazing. There are then three guitarists that fill the two guitar roles when needed.
    The eastern band is :
    Takayoshi Ohmura (Guitar)
    ISAO (Guitar)
    Leda Cygnus (Guitar)
    BOH (Bass)
    Aoyama Hideki (Drums)
The western band was added when the eastern Kamis couldn't dedicate themselves to world tours back in 2019, and have also been a stable lineup. They aren't session musicians, but we don't know what contract they have with them. Many of them actually have UA-cam channels if you want to check them out.
    The western band is:
    Chris Kelly (Guitar)
    CJ Masciantonio (Guitar)
    Clint Tustin (Bass)
    Anthony Barone (Drums)
