Hello from Austria! How do you apply the gloss medium so you don't smudge the pastels?

I'm curious to see what you would do next. Do you have a video that shows that part? I am enjoying your free workshop, but the how of building enticing layers that show through the final product eludes me! I have signed up for your stARTs course and expect to learn much more. Thank you so much!

Thanks Judy, your process is similar to Nicholas Wilton Art2life and Pamela Coughey. It’s a fun way to work and very effective, 😍

Hi Judy. I just watched a video about how you make harmonious colours by using the mother colour or adding a bit of any previously mixed colour into the new colour. Do you do this technique with all your paintings? This one for instance?

Now will that be the final layer? Or will you put another layer on top of the marks you just made?

No, this painting had lots more layers. At this stage I'm just building the surface.

I have found that the Oil Sticks don't dry and it gets mushed into subsequent layers of paint. Which Oil sticks do you recommend?

    • @judywoodsart

Oil pastels (these are thin) don't dry, but oil sticks (usually fat) do dry. The ones I use are from R&F

Is this a R&F oil stick?,

I really like this video and your explanation as you demonstrate. How long does it take for the pastels to dry before you use the gloss medium? Are there some pastels that take longer to dry? I used Sennelier oil pastels and they're softer than some. What do you use and what was the darker oil stick you used last? Love your courses and look forward to your Arty Chats mentoring calls.

Hi Kate, The pastels actually don't dry, they just remain oily. The oil stick dries and I applied the gloss medium about 24 hours after doing the drawing. The medium does provide a film of acrylic that you can then paint on without disturbing the pastel or oil stick. I squeegee the medium onto the surface. Hope that answers your questions.

@@judywoodsart I can't believe you apply the gloss medium that quickly. I also didn't know you could use gloss medium over oil stick. Mine smudges- guessing you apply it very lightly with the squeegee?

Is the pastel water-soluble or oil pastel? iff it is Oil pastel can you cover Oil pastel with gloss medium? Water over oil?

    • @judywoodsart

It's oil pastel and oil stick which does dry. Both can be sealed with acrylic medium.
