Have to make a note here - collapsing first and second fingers in thumb position can be incredibly useful in certain playing situations. Many world class soloists do it often, (Dominik Wagner, Rabbath, Marc Andre, Rinat Ibragimov, Edgar Meyer) especially during string crossings, and i cant actually think of another player that NEVER collapses those fingers. It's good to know when it is and isn't a good idea to collapse them.

Who did your fingerboard job? It's very well done. The curve of the fingerboard follows the curve of the bridge and the entire length of the fingerboard is usable. Often you get decent action on the G string and then the action precipitously rises on the D and A strings in thumb position, making thumb position very hard on the lower strings.

Collapsed fingers not only slow my fingers, it's painful: makes arthritic first index finger joint hurt.
Franco Petracchi, in "Simplified Higher Technique", teaches three TP positions: chromatic, semi chromatic, and diatonic, to be used as needed, and I recall exercises where switching between chromatic and semi-chromatic positions is used.
But you want the student to stick to the chromatic TP fingering during your course?

Hi Lauren, I play some electric bass and I just ordered a Cecilio CDB100 3/4. I saw all the reviews and they are a good and affordable bass to start. I am thinking about lower the action on the strings. What is the lowest measurement that I can use on a bass?
sry if im not understanding correctly,i shouldn't practice 'Chromatic' & 'Semi Chromatic' & diatonic etc pick 1?
so if im playing the Melody to ' Fly Me To The Moon' in B flat 4 instance , there are half steps in Melody so i go between Chromatic & Semi Chromatic ? big believer in Muscle memory , sry It's really late here in LaLa & i got the dumb real bad !

Hey JP, The "chromatic" and "semi chromatic" hand shapes are part of a specific method - the Petracchi Method. I use a different method for my hand shape in thumb position, but I studied the Petracchi Method in high school. Like I said in the video, there's no right or wrong method - stick with the one you're using if it works for you so you can stay consistent.
thnx for answering me back ! im learning The Lauren Method now ,we likee much much! class is very good! although my thumb is sore , waah! & it'not easy to bow my bass up in T.P. especially w/ Eurosonic Strings(not steel) on .. let alone pressing dwn using only my tips now on the A& E strings ! yikes , thanks for great lessons- jpizzle

Hi I'm looking into playing the double bass but one concern that I have is that I'm barley 5'2 (5 feet;2 inches) and so I'm not sure how that would affect my playing..if it would affect it at all. I play the tuba in my high school band so I'm used to big instruments but also nervous on how might me stretching can cause clasped fingers and such.. so any advice? I'm also quite excited to learn something new like this.
Gabriele Ward I'm only 5 foot too and I play the bass you can adjust the size of the bass with the end pin so you can shorten it
You can choose from a full size bass, a 3/4 size bass (smaller), 1/2 size bass (even smaller), and a 1/4 size bass (eeeven smalllerr). I know I'm late, but I hope I still helped.
