Your channel is the most concise yet informative for simple, detailed information! I love the way you both explain with clarity, thank you so much for your work!
You put the 2nd pharyngeal arches skeletal structures --> stapes in the muscles box! Fab video, I really enjoy the background details you are providing it really helps me visualise this development rather than just memorise blindly what all the derivatives are. I also appreciate how you are including both the pouch and the cleft as you go along which again is very logical. Thank you!
thank you for such a helpful lecture but i wanna point out a mistake.. you said that thymus originates from dorsal component of third pharyngeal pouch and inferior parathyroid gland from ventral component but in actual it is opposite i-e thymus from ventral and parathyroid from dorsal component. Thank you!
Hi Dr. Matt & Dr. Mike: Thank you very much for the excellent lesson. A question: I was wondering if the pinna (external ear) is also a branchial derivative. I noticed that individuals with First & Second Arch Syndrome (very rare) often have an underdeveloped or an almost completely absent external ear. Thank you very much.
Hi John, sorry for not getting back to you sooner. Yes you are correct, the external ear is derived from mesenchymal tissue from the 1st and 2nd arches. Also, because it develops from atleast 6 different buds of tissue, there is great variety in the outcome of the pinna's shape etc.. And, obviously it developing malformations, usually this associated with kidney and/or pharyngeal arch deficits.
Among all videos I have seen you make these embryological are the best. You have good structure and paint stuff clearly. This series helps a lot!

Great video! But I thought there were 5 pouches and only 4 clefts.
Hi Luke. What resource did you obtain this information from?
Thanks . Nice video
superb thanks a lot

Thyroid develops from ventral wing of 3rd pouch and inf parathyroid glands develop from dorsal wing. Please correct it.
The thyroid develops from the foramen cecum of the tongue, via the thyroglossal duct.
not thyroid ...
thymus from ventral wing of 3rd pouch
inf parathyroid gland from dorsal wing of 3rd pouch.
thanks alot
