- Dilip Kumar & Madhubala didn't attend the premiere show of their film Mughal E Azam held at Maratha Mandir in 1960. This video tells the viewers all about the premiere show of Mughal E Azam and also gives the reason why Dilip Kumar & Madhubala were absent on that special occasion. Dilip Kumar & Madhubala were in a close relationship but their love affair ended during the making of Mughal E Azam. All the famous celebrities from the Bombay film world attended the premiere of Mughal E Azam in Maratha Mandir on 5 August 1960. Mughal-e-Azam had the widest release of any Indian film up to that time, and patrons often queued all day for tickets. Released on 5 August 1960, it broke box office records in India and became the highest-grossing Indian film of all time, a distinction it held for 15 years. The accolades awarded to the film include one National Film Award and three Filmfare Awards at the 8th Filmfare Awards. Mughal-e-Azam was the first black-and-white Hindi film to be digitally coloured, and the first in any language to be given a theatrical re-release. The colour version, released on 12 November 2004, was also a commercial success. Mughal E Azam is a 1960 Indian epic historical drama film directed by K. Asif and produced by Shapoorji Pallonji.

My parents have told me that when it was announced that Mughal-e-Azam shall be telecast on Door Darshan, sales of TV sets in Lahore broke all records. People bought TVs just so that can watch this one film. People from far and away came to Lahore to see the film. (Door Darshan Amritsar or Delhi broadcasts could be caught only in Lahore and adjoining areas). Most of such people came and stayed with their relatives but many 'relative-less' people also came. I don't know how they managed. All this just to see this film. Generations have passed, but it's magic still reigns supreme.

Madhubala was unwell and Dilip Kumar was sulking because his sister had married K. Asif, secretly. And he was very annoyed with this.

Manto has written that Nazir was K. Asif's uncle (on his mother's side), not his cousin. Nazir and Swarn Lata were a star couple even before the independence and continued working in Pakistan making some beautiful films.

Actually, this must have been the first time that the general public must have seen such marketing gimmicks before the release of a film.
Advertisements were definitely different in the 60s.
This style of marketing did create a lasting impression in the minds of the people imagine a ticket of Rs.1.30/- being sold in black @ Rs.100/- !!
K.Asif had invited the who's who of Bombay and all the lesading actors, - directors, from the Film Industry.
Actually I was under tge impression that Dilip Kumar & Madhubala did nit attend the premier due to the diffrerences between boh the actors and the court case. I was wrong, I did not kniw that DilipKumar did not attend the premier of the movie because K.Asif had married his sistee without telling anybodt.
It surely must be frustrating for him.
The pictures shared in the video from the premier day, are just marvellous, Nutan Tanuja, Nimmi, Suraiya, Dev Anand - Kalpna Kartik, Raj kapoor, Shammi Kapoor all were present...You actually took us back in time through this video !!
