The only reason I clicked on this video was because I thought, "Hey, I know who Paul Rennick is, I wonder what this guy has to say about him." I'm so glad I did! I marched snare in high school and at the beginning of college but stopped a few years ago, and I've never taught music, but I think some of the teaching insights you mention here can translate far beyond the world of music!
The quality of instruction is paramount. I went out for the wrong drum line my senior year of high school, had a moment where I couldn’t play well to save my life, and was yelled at and belittled by the caption head in front of the entire battery. It turned me off and lead me to abandon my passion for marching percussion. One of my only true regrets.
Truth. That's why I never worried about where Paul and Sandi were going to teach. They could've gone to Bushwackers and I'd have followed them. Lol, luckily we went from Crown to Phantom Regiment. Sucks to hear man. I hate when a bad teacher extinguishes someone's fire.
As a young instructor, this video was packed full of awesome food for thought. This type of content is so valuable, and I really appreciate you taking the time to make it.
Precisely why I made it! Thank you so much. I kind of knew this would be a very niche topic and the video wouldn't do so well. I'm so glad it's finding its audience! I'll keep doing videos like this, even though they aren't as popular as pad reviews or reactions. Lol
Thanks, that means a lot! I really wanted to bring more quality to the drum community on UA-cam. There are a few great channels out there, but there can definitely be more!
Fantastic video! I'm in the process of writing a percussion manual for the students/staff where I teach, and you've given me a lot of ideas of what to include. In this video and in others. Cheers!
Excellent! I love hearing from other educators! I'm a bit tied up with life right now, hoping to get some free time to make more videos.. I've got quite a few ideas brewing! Thanks for the support!
10/10 recommend drumming for one of his lines if you can. Lol, he literally shaped my brain. He's really the reason why I think about words so much. I remember one time under the tree at UNT, we were playing a simple timing exercise, going back and forth between triplets and fivelets... He listened to a rep, and said, "Stop thinking about the fives as 123 12.. switch it to 12 123!" He could tell what we were thinking by the way we sounded! (We sounded like we were playing a triplet then two 8ths; our fivelt was quicker on the first 3 notes and slower on the last 2... He HEARD the grouping. So he knew what words to give us to fix it. By just THINKING 12 123, our fivelets were instantly even and smooth on the next rep. 🤯 He does things like that all the time because he knows that how you THINK about something is incredibly important. Just look at us at Phantom Regiment in 2003... We all look pretty different in the way we hold the sticks, and even the way we move to a certain extent... BUT, the way we think and perceive is 100% aligned.
@@paddric_ryan Absolutely love to hear that! I am more of a front ensemble guy and it would be my dream to be on a Sandi Rennick line! In fact, listening to Sandi's writing is pretty much the only reason I started taking four mallet seriously and have wanted to do dci. After over a year of working on it I can finally play all of the marimba part for SCV 2018 and I couldn't be more excited. I just absolutely love the Rennicks, they are both amazing. I'm sad SCV didnt march this year but I hope to be there when they come back and be in a rennick ensemble!
@@henwill8 yesssssss! Keep your dream alive! Go audition! Watch all the videos! Learn all the notes! Everything I'm saying comes from them. I will never EVER forget my time with them.

Two cardinal rules,. Sticks up Shut up, and Don’t Drum On The Way!. I’ll never forget. Tom Float and Paul Rennick together at VK. In 1994. Just the best times in my life. I found this genius site last night. What took me so long? 😂 Maaan just hearing these words and concepts make me feel at home. Thank you @paddric Ryan. Thank you.
What line was the chunk at the end of the video from? It sounds super familiar. It’s definitely on Dynasty drums but some of the writing sounds like an instance of when Paul takes some old Vanguard books and repurposes phrases for Troopers, and I’ve definitely heard some of those microphrases during my time at Troop
2003 Phantom Regiment. Lol, pearl drums and vic firth sticks. Regiment was under contract with Vic firth for one more year, so we compromised. IP was used in the pit, and we had to use VF in the battery (which was strange lol). Paul was still a pearl guy back then, so you're hearing Pearl drums (pre carbon) with white maxx heads.
Im so glad I found your channel. Dude for being a small channel rn your fuckin KILLIN it!! Just from the production quality I would assume you have a career from this channel. Keep this shit up man this community needs more people like you ❤
@@Iplayquad I marched in the snareline for 2002 Crown and 2003-04 Phantom. I don't have a phantom tattoo, I don't think.. lol, now I'm wondering which one looks like it. 🙃
@@paddric_ryan oh im so dumb. I dont know where I got tattoo from, I saw the drum head in the background 😂😂 I guess I forgot and just assumed I saw a tattoo. Well nice man! Rookie year with crown is pretty cool
@@Iplayquad 🤣 Oh man, I was just following Paul. Crown in those days isn't what it is now! Don't get it twisted though.. lol, we were drummin! But as a corps...? 😬
I've got a few (3) in the works. My next video will be a pad review. I wish I could crank them out faster and more frequently, but I'm a full time single dad with a full time job and a part time teaching gig. Lol, hopefully someday I can be a full time UA-camr! But until then, I sincerely appreciate your support and enthusiasm! I promise it's coming!
I did indeed! I was in the snareline for 2002 Crown, 2002 UNT PASIC, and 2003 and 2004 Phantom Regiment. In the off-seasons, we had a "spring line" at UNT that he taught as well. Really, that was just a chance to arc it up under a tree and figure stuff out. I drummed with him as much as I could. Lol
Truly unlocked my brain to the idea that words are more than their dictionary definitions. I'm so thankful for that experience at such a (relatively) young age.
I was in the 2002 Crown snareline, 2002 UNT PASIC snareline, 2003 and 2004 Phantom Regiment snareline. Thanks for thinking I'm young enough to have marched since he's been at SCV. 🙃
I have two: 1. There's no reason to ever be mean or belittle anyone. Keep your cool. Don't go out of your way to say negative things. DO go out of your way to call out genuinely good things (don't say it's good when it wasn't, they can smell BS). 2. Be recklessly solid. They need to know that you aren't going to let them influence the tempos or dynamics. You've been entrusted with significant responsibility. Once they know you're reliable and unwavering, they'll feel safe. And when they feel safe, they'll be effortlessly clean - and it's soooooo much fun to play clean!
😂 "Drums, you're off". Goes back to high school for me.. Elicited more stick drops on the floor. Passive aggressive little Fs, we were. To your point, WTF did THAT mean?
🤣🤣 It means they couldn't identify what the actual problem was... It just sounded wrong to them, so they decided to let you know that they knew it didn't sound right. It takes zero musical knowledge to know if something sounds "off" 🤣
this has to be the most hidden/underappreciated drum channel ever the quality is insane man! keep it up and im sure you will grow fast.
Literally!!
