  • Cool flowers! Originally posted in early January for my Zone 7b, last frost April 15, but still time to get them going in the more northern climates.

I’m so glad you pivoted to gardening. I recently retired and have played with a cutting garden previously but really want to dig deeper and learn what I can. Soil blocking sounds like the way to go as opposed to trays. We’ve got two long raised beds for flowers and vegetables and are 2 hours north of you in Kentucky. Thanks for sharing so much good info - now I’ve got more seeds to order!

I usually buy already started summer flowers for my pots. I'm interested in buying seeds. Can I just plant the seeds directly in the grown? Or is it best to start in trays then transplant?

It depends on the seeds! Some like zinnias and sunflowers do great just tossed on the ground, you have to put extra to account for the birds, lol. But those go out after last frost. For early spring, bachelor button, Larkspur, nigella all do great just tossed in ground. You can put them in ground now, they like it cold, even freezing!

@LisaMonique ohhhh thank you so so much for the reply! I went to my local farm today for my potted flower plants and did buy zinnias and sunflower seeds just on a whim - so good guess for me - I clearly had no idea. Thanks for your recommendations. I enjoyed watching your garden videos today. I can definitely see your shift of enthusiasm when you talk about garden :):) I've watched you for years but your sparkle is back ! I heard you mention VA in one video. I'm a Richmond VA girl :):)

Have you always gardened or is this a new interest?

New interest, last year was my first year and I grew everything in a cloth grow bag or container. This year I thought most would be in-ground, but now I've started so much, I may need to use all my grow bags again too!
