Andrew the guys at PC forum are all pretty cool, you should post there. As someone who actually owned an early 2000's XL2 I can give some insight to what the real deal is about owning one.
Do you like to wrench? No? Got deep pockets? Yes you can buy a decent bus for 2-300k but you are going to spend easily a $1000 a month in maintenance and likely upgrades, and that is YOU doing the labor. The more miles you put on it the more work you will do. Every trip I did I came back with a list of stuff that needed to be fixed, and I was doing most of the work myself, including all maintenance on the Detroit. ( You want a pre-egr 12.7, best engine ever made imo ).
I had very minor delam, I fixed it with Bostick 073a, the problem did not come back. Airbags, suspension bushings, roof air problems, fan clutches, all the house side problems....on and on.
Previous owner of my coach took good care of it but was just tired of dumping money in it. I took GREAT care of mine and still spent $25k in the first year, I got tired of always worrying about what else would break. Guy I sold it to kept it a couple years and also sold it after getting tired of the expense.
So yes, compared to your average plastic coach, a used Marathon or similar is incredible value, the quality is off the charts compared to all the garbage that comes out of Indiana. The price of admission is just the beginning, you will find out the true cost of ownership later on...ohh and that shiny Prevost attracts a lot of attention...everyone assumes you have money and when you go for repairs you will be charged accordingly....you DO have money right???!!!!

@@RVingwithAndrewSteele Just a few more thoughts on owning a Prevost. Right now the cost of insurance is going way up, at a minimum it will be $3k a year on up to close to 10k at the high end. Fuel is cheap now but when I was running mine I had many $600-800 dollar fill ups ( I had long range tanks ). The chassis and drive-train are pretty bulletproof but these are complex and there is always something on the house side to look after. Some things are proprietary to the converter and you will need help.
Finally, if you do decide to maintain it yourself remember this is a very heavy commercial vehicle, you will need skills and the right tools. While the converters do amazing work, things are packaged tight and working on or getting to things can be challenging. Want to pull the valve cover to run the overhead on the Detroit? Pull apart half of the back part of the bedroom etc etc.
I may still buy another Prevost but every time I think about it, I remember back to how much work I put into it...oh and then you have to keep them washed and waxed, a tedious job...I paid others to detail, not cheap...but I HATED doing it myself...whaddaya charge for a detail Andrew?? Keep the videos coming!

This is exactly like owning large boats, sail or power. You figure 10% of total value of boat to be spent on maintenance per year. It’s just the way it is. If your home moved often like a bus or a boat you’d have the same problems.

I hope that Kyle can hang in there. This pandemic has everything messed up.
Thank you for posting the truth about maintaining and repairing older bus.
I have an 06 450 Lxi Wanderlodge. It has it's issues also. I am always constantly fixing stuff. Nothing major but always fixing. My bus was upgraded and repaired to the tune of over 66K dollars
before we purchased and we still have things to attend to. Nothing major. Just always something.
I didn't realize about those Prevost delam issues until recently. My friend has an older 90's Prevost and replacing the Aqua-Hot was going to be a 14K repair. He and his mechanic rebuilt the unit for a little less than 1K. That guy is now my mechanic.
Thanks again. I really appreciate your honesty and service to the industry.

I run Prevost commercially and I would agree that they are the “Cadillac of motorcoaches but they’re some real downsides of owning them. Commercially it’s far easier sourcing used parts that drivers like to destroy if you own an MCI simply because MCI owns about 60% of the market and used parts are much more available. Prevost air is very troublesome once the coaches get some age on them . One local charter bus company here that runs 80 H3-45 units is giving Prevost absolute hell over the problems that they are having. They buy five new ones a year from Prevost and it’s not uncommon for them to be riddled with problems that simply shouldn’t be happening. I’ve purchased my last Prevost. From a charter perspective MCI makes more financial sense.

Another informative and honest video, Andrew. Really good to hear Kyle’s experience with all his buses, and we have to remember that these are all “worst case” scenarios to these problems and also that a fibreglass coach isn’t maintenance free either and they also can have expensive repair bills. A bit off topic but it looks like the XLII entertainer buses have less overhang behind the tag than the private buses, that chassis looks more like a longer wheelbase X3, what’s that about?

Owning/Renting a coach like a Prevost is no different than if you went out and bought/leased an exotic car! Something along the lines of a Ferrari, Lamborghini, McLaren or even a Porsche. If you can afford to buy/rent, then in all honesty, you should also be able to afford the monthly/yearly costs involved in keeping such a behemoth on the road and yet still safe to everyone!

Kyle is so laid back and cool! Actually Prevost should take pointers from this video! They should either correct the problems or make the parts for fixing the problem extra affordable. The 5 grand for the seal is unexceptable! A call to china one of us can get that same rubber strip made for around 20 bucks a piece and sold here for about 200! Kyle is a fountain of knowledge with Prevost and his attitude is super cool!

    I feel your pain, trucks/ Buses/ Heavy Equipment of any Kind...CHA CHING,$$$$$$$
A good way to look at heavy equipment, and Buses is the first 5 years or 300,000 miles is always the best after that the Daily/Monthly/ Yearly upkeep can get a little expensive. You really have to look at what is cheaper or better for your self. The first 5 years of deprecation on a 2.4 million dollar bus, or the cost of repairs and up keep on the next 5/10 years of a used coach. If the previous owners were up to speed on up keep and kept the equipment zeroed out on Maintenance The Later is cheaper...If not look out...
    My opinion..

Usually a lot more than a " throwaway motor home does to fix and sometimes just to repair a "PREVOST" costs more than the cost of a BRAND NEW throwaway motor home, SO in my humble opinion is it really worth the cost to own "THE BEST" ? because they all break!YES to be able to have the word PREVOST on the front and rear is a statement! what statement does it make about the owner? i suppose its mostly about our attitude on life and to other people whether you live in a Prevost or Jayco lol :)

The problem with motorcoaches is they sit, when they sit it allows oxidation to happen.. when trucks go down the road your constantly having maintenance done, flats,, new tires, brake work seals, so you catch any issues. These fellows are talking low mileage low maintenance vehicles. Like going and buying a 25 to 30 year old vehicle that has 5000 miles and not expecting any issues. I had a chance to buy a 2003 Toyota avalon with 15000 miles but th ey wanted $9000 for it ,they even put new tires on it. I pulled the Trans. dip stick and the fluid was like honey.I suspect that the person who bought it put at least $6000. into it within 6 months. Low mile, high deterioration, things break.

Although the coaches look nice with the slides out, as for myself, if I was to buy an older coach, I would much prefer a no slide coach, as they get older it seems as if more problems seem to creep up everytime you come back from a trip, and to me, slides are just another huge expense, when they break down or leak, you're talking big bucks to repair them. If you can afford a brand new coach that has a good warranty, and your the type of person that trades up every 4 or 5 yrs then it would be nice to have a couple of slides, otherwise 10+ yrs old, I'll stick with the no slide coach.

Hub pilot hubs are around 400$ a piece, hub pilot wheels 250$ a piece. Plus whatever you spend on decent tires.18k to swap it over to hub pilots...Thats at least 8k in labor they charge ,thats insane.

Your talking Prevost, like talking Hatteras yachts labor rates and parts cost put into a millionaires budget. A doctor once told me its not how much , I just write a check. True statement, most of us don't live in that world. You ever see a person making $40000 a year going out and buying a Prevost or a Hatteras they couldn't afford the first fuel up.

Most people that buy prevost don't realize what kind of problems your in for. I think a nice 5th wheel or trailer should be fine. Why waste so much money on these money losing RVs. I got lucky i bought a pleasure way plateau ts kept it a year and used it for a summer and sold it for $7,000 more then i paid for it. That was a miracle

Andrew when your making your videos saying you want transparency, maybe try getting all the facts. Yes I’m the owner of a 99 Marathon with rivets so I don’t have the delamination issues that the XLII have, but you need to get the facts before you try to scare people out of buying the coaches. First you said that the Prevost fix for the delamination is only good for 10 years, this is false, check with Prevost its good for the life of the coach, I have friends who have had it done. Your friend with the tour buses, who only pulls the panel out a bit and squirts more glue in and said it good for 10 years might be correct saying that . He also said it costs $10 thousand to do this, that equates to $1000 a year which isn’t bad considering he stated he runs them 80000 miles a year, which over 10 years is 800000 miles. Please show me any other fiberglass coach that will run 800000 miles, and as he said most of his coaches were early 2000’s, doing the math 20 years times 80000 miles a year works out to 1.6 million miles, again show me a fiberglass coach still on the road and running with mileage like that.. Some of your viewers say they are a black hole and cost way to much, well please compare apples to apples, Prevost’s have to meet crash test ratings for a commercial vehicle, which I will guarantee the other coaches can’t touch.
Have you typed RV crashes into the youtube search window, 95% of other RV’s will disintegrate in a crash, where as the Prevost will most likely still be intact and you will walk away, as you keep saying its all about the safety, and a commercial vehicle such as these just cost more than their non commercial counter parts, quality cost more period.
I’m not trying to say that Prevost’s don’t have issues they do, but so does every other brand. I personally like the information your providing your viewers but please get all the facts correct before you hit post.
One other thing, you said that Prevost Community wouldn’t let you join, that seems strange to me as this the nicest group of people you will ever meet, anyone of the forum will bend over backwards to help you with any question you might have about Prevost ownership, good bad or otherwise. Is a bus for everyone, I would say no, but don’t knock because you don’t have one, they are an amazing coach with pro’s and con’s just like any other RV.

I follow and like what you are doing, but goodness gracious, why talk about every, single, major event that is truly at the highest end of repair costs.
It so very unlikely that each of these will happen at the same time. For those that want to know the “reality” of the matter, join Prevost Community or Prevost Owner Group. That is where you can see what owners if Prevost go through on a regular basis.
One other thing. Take extreme caution if you even consider buying a used Entertainer Tour Coach. They could possibly be well maintained, but the an Entertainer Tour Coach will be subject to so much abuse you may just likely incur all of these inflated repairs that Andrew talks about.
As with the media, unbiased needs to be taken here. Ask other major Entertainer Coach operators about their experience.
If you want to know about privately owned Prevost ownership and repair costs, talk to private owners. Our experience is far different than what has been talked about in this video.
Apples to Apples matters when making these types of repair cost claims.

I definitely try to get as much information as possible. I have other videos where I have interviewed Prevost owners about their Prevost problems. For some reason, even though I followed all of the rules of the Prevost owners group, they banned me! I'm not sure what the reason is, but whoever is in charge of the Prevost owners group is not a fan of mine. I would much rather get my information from that group but because they don't like me, I don't have access and can only make videos about what I have access to. look up my video, Marathon coach owner after 14 years of ownership or Prevost problems with mid-life. If you or any Prevost owners you know ever want to come visit me in Scottsdale, I would be happy to interview you.

    • @rsbolin
      @rsbolin 4 роки тому +1

RVing with Andrew Steele I have watched the majority of your videos including those with private owners. All I can say is that is highly unlikely that private owners are doing anything close to 80K miles per year on their coach. The most I have heard about is a quarter of that. Most of us try to get to it destination and then stay there for a while. I know quite few private owners that will go from place to place across the country in a month, but again, there is usually some stay in place time in each place visited.
Those Entertainer Coach and Tour Operators are constantly on the go. Seeing them do 80K miles in a year is quite easy.
It is just likely to be the case with a Private Prevost owner.
I hate to learn the POG banned you. Quite a lot of good and accurate private ownership information on POG and Prevost Community. In PC we are a family that is unbiased and truly try to take care of one another.
Take care and keep the videos coming. Hope your high end detailing business is doing alright.

@@rsbolin Thanks Ron, the season is over for the detailing business unfortunately. Around April, all of the RVs head north and it will be a little bit too warm to detail coaches down here. I usually make a majority of my income between January and April so this has been a tough season.
I understand that these two are bosses are going to be put to the test much more than traditional RVs and that was why we made sure to disclose early in the video that these coaches get 80000 miles a year put on them. that was actually a late part of the conversation but I edited it to the beginning of the video because I thought it was important. I'm still a member of Prevost community so will try to learn as much as possible in that group. These Prevost coaches are truly meant to run a million miles and most of those sitting around RV parks will never reach half of that. They really are a machine that is built for a purpose. What year and converter is your coach? Where are you located? I would be happy to interview you if we ever cross paths
