I do it the super dummy way, forget what each tick mark means. In this example you know you need to add 3/4, count all the tick marks 0 to the 3/4" mark. Since each tick on this scale represents 1/16" you end up with 12 ticks or 12/16". Now go to your 7/16" tick mark and count up 12 ticks. Not as fast but no other tools needed. Once you memorize how many 1/16" are in each fraction it becomes pretty quick.

Thanks for the tip! Wish my dad could have taught me this way, would have saved us both frustration! I actually understood both ways. Cheers!

    I would just take the 3 7/16 round up to 3 1/2 add 3/4 for 4 1/4 then less the extra 1/16 for 4 3/16.
Frankly if you want to be successful in the trades you should be able to do this level of math in your head

This is why I hate math problem when dealing with tape measures because I'm an ace at measuring things with a tape measure in real life, making cuts or reading blue prints . It sucks I have to take an assessment test on math I don't get when I can do it in real life in a practical way.
Lord help me on my assessment test.

It’s good to know math but in real life u could just count it out on the tape or Mark both numbers and measure the sum super quick

@@gonova8412 same its very good to know math but for me its just its very confusing using imperial. Ive been using metric to do some quick math and just convert it back into imperial...but I wont be able to do that on jobsites...thats my only worry about me going to go try to become electrician. Because for conduit bending its ALOT of math also shrink and the multipliers needed. Plus to get in the union you need to do a test just on math...simple math I can fly easily but start throwing fractions...I get lost

Like always great videos. I want to thank you for taking the time to put this up. I have a question how is it that you got 12/16? Thank you for your time.
