Matt's bit about the sermons reminds me: when I was a young kid I attended a religious school that at one point required us all to give a sermon. I had been assigned a section to work from and merely made it up as I went along and got a fantastic grade by winging it. If a small child can fake it..

I so appreciate Mr. Dillahunty's efforts to assert reason over faith. This is an ongoing and often thankless job, especially in America. His patience with the expounders of faith based claims often strikes me as amazingly measured.
We who value what is demonstrably true over belief based claims are often tempted to dismiss them as willfully ignorant rather than intelligent people burdened with inculcated belief. I do think that ridicule and sarcasm has value, however it rarely can cause a shift in an apologist of any particular religious position.
    Thanks Matt.

    • @yhenry77
      @yhenry77 9 років тому

Tom West ignorant action? I disagree with that statement, why? First of all, what is it? "Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen." - Henbrews 11:1
Is it blind luck or magic? No.... How do you receive it? "So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ." - Romans 10:17
Miracles by FAITH can happen in our lives if we listen and act upon the word of God. Example: When Jesus was seen walking on water at 3 o'clock in the morning. Peter asked if he could walk out to him, all Jesus said was 'come' and Peter walked on water. I believe many people will need daily miracles over the next few years. Build your faith by reading the bible, praying and act upon his word.
"Peter said to Him, "Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water. And He said, "Come!" And Peter got out of the boat, and walked on the water and came toward Jesus." - Matthew 14:28-29

      reply to: Logical Thinker:
Perhaps we can see it from your perspective, because we choose to.
However, many less logical thinkers choose differently. I have exchanged thoughts with a few self-proclaimed athiests, who's spiritual perspective revolved around denying the existence of God. Thus, if God truly did not exist, they would have no foundation for their beliefs.
They seemed to embrace their God-given free will to actively deny Him, without realizing the subtle irony of their chosen position.

    • @ant9925
      @ant9925 6 років тому +2

marshalllhiepler 1st of all I do not accept the concept of "god given free will". It does not logically follow that an all knowing omnipotent god gives its creation free will. However I understand we will never agree on this. The problem I see with your statement is your attributing of a small number of comments from strong athiests. Try to remember that all atheists are different. We do not follow a doctrine like a religion does. Of course some atheists do assert "there is no god" and to those atheists then maybe you could make an argument for your statement. However atheism itself is only the lack of belief in god and not the assertion that there is no god. What could be said is that religion (christianity specifically) claims we are all poisoned and the atheist refuses to accept we are poisoned without evidence that we are poisoned. Atheism offers no cure and doesn't even really offer an opinion.

    • @marshalllhiepler
      @marshalllhiepler 6 років тому

      Reply to: Logical Thinker
I agree that "all atheists are different". I have been aware of this during our conversation thus far. In my view, nothing is exactly the same as even similar things. Therefore, it could be said that similarity is inversely proportionate to depth of dissection. The Snickers bar advertising statement: "No matter how you slice it, it comes up peanuts." is based upon rather broad conditions. These conditions may have been commonly accepted in 1972, by the advertiser's targeted audience. But, with today's technologies, such as computer guided lasers, such whimsical statements are likely to be challenged.
While this concept can be applied to my perspectives, I remain inclined to suggest that my experience as a parent, supports the necessity of offering free will to one's "creation" for the purpose of allowing individuality, and the differences you speak of.
Again, the concept of free will is dependent upon "how you slice it". Suppose a parent's child is playing in the driveway in front of their house. How stifling it would be, to draw a chalk-line circle of a few feet diameter for the child to play within. That said, how irresponsible it would be on the other hand, to neglect to draw a "chalk-line" a few feet from the adjoining roadway, with a safety rule that prohibits the child from playing beyond it.
Bear with me a moment longer, while I further elaborate.
So, the poorly disciplined neighbor's child wanders up the driveway (from playing in the roadway) and asserts to the "obedient child": "If you play in the roadway, ye shall not surely die, for your parents doth know that in the day that you play in the roadway, your eyes will be opened, and you will become wise like them."
Some atheists are likely to assert that there are no parents. They simply don't exist.
However, as you propose, not all are of the same view. Since you are a Logical Thinker, you may accept that there must be parents somewhere. The question then becomes one of identifying truth. Are the parents to be trusted? Is the child justified, if he feels oppressed by the rules created by the parents? If the child is struck by a vehicle while disobeying his parents, and summarily agrees with their logic afterwards, is this an acceptable method of learning in the eyes of the parents?
How far would you like to dissect this? Is it not logical that the seemingly endless road of dissection would ultimately lead to agreement with the parent's perspective, once the child's need for defiance has run its course?

*_Why does nobody ever call WLC out on his duties/values trick?!_*
When talking about *"objective morality"*, WLC uses his _duties/values trick_ as a way of shifting his definition of the word _objective_. If objective is used as a noun, meaning a "goal", we are only talking about moral _values_. If objective is used as an adjective, meaning "independent of human experience" we are only talking about moral _duties_. So, when he starts to get beaten down on one of these two fronts, he actually changes the subject by passing from one definition to the other , and _gets away with it!_ I have never seen a debate where his opponent points this out.

Are you asking if I believe abortion is infanticide? No, I do not. Because, by definition, fetuses are NOT infants, or children. Infanticide refers to one murdering their own children. And the age doesn't matter, so long as that child has been born. So you're remark here is stupid in multiple ways, Way to go.
Are you asking if I think that ONLY Christianity is a crock of horse shit who's negative effects far outweigh the positive effects? Nope. Every religion ever invented is EQUALLY as absurd, EQUALLY as wrong, and EQUALLY as harmful to the world as a whole. I don't play favorites. I am an atheist. @WienArtist 3 роки тому

@@giardaphslaw5572 The real truth is that a person who claims to be an atheist will always refuse any evidence because it will never fit their definition of evidence. Even if God would come to them personally, they would claim that they were hallucinating, and sluff it off as invalid. Incidentally, an atheist really should make more modest claims in the first place, instead of going around claiming that God does not exist, because they have no evidence or proof of that claim. They ought to make more modest claims, as in admitting that they are agnostics, since that is at least honest.
The other point I would make is that there are many more people who consider that there IS much evidence for God's existence, against what atheist fail to accept. In regard to the law of non-contradiction, both viewpoints cannot be right. I will adhere to the position that makes the most logical sense - that there is much more evidence for the existence of God than no evidence that he does not exist. Oh, and emotional appeals against his non-existence do not apply. For example, the laws of physics negatively impact (literally and figuratively) a great deal of people, and crying about their effects does not invalidate their existence; like getting mad at the law of gravity when I fall and break a bone - does not make a good argument that gravity does not exist just because I don't like it.

I will tell you the truth. God is not love, he is love and wrath. It is he that controls our beliefs. The damned are blinded to the truth. The Bible is not an offer or an invitation, it is a notice to those whom he saves so they know what is happening. It is only by God's mercy that you could ever truly believe in Jesus. Your lack of remorse after wronging others keeps you ineligible for mercy.
Your scoffing and stupidity is evidence to support the Bible's claim that you are supernaturally stupefied.

I think it depends on the context. If you are debating with someone being nice to you, you can be nice to them as a person and focus on the issues with their argument. We have all been misinformed about something some way or another and everyone has the chance of becoming informed. If they are willing to debate with you, perhaps they do want to become better informed. If they use their religion to be a total jerk, then that's a different story and the dynamic of the conversation changes. If they advocate for things like slavery or religious supremacy I totally get where you are coming from.

    Preach it Matt...preach it.
Just to head off some of the responses, this is from an Atheist:
"Yes. A few atheists proselytize directly, e.i. some variation on "You should give up your irrational belief in a god and become atheist. It's the only rational position." (I wish they wouldn't do this, but they do.)
Many, if not most atheist proselytize indirectly by answering questions about atheists and religion and explaining what atheists and atheism are all about.
    Our mission statement is:
We support freethinkers, nonbelievers, doubters, skeptics, the undecided, and the children of theists, and let them know they are not alone. Therefore, we correct mistaken ideas about atheism and counter myth with reality, dogma with reason, superstition with science, sophistry with logic, ignorance with fact, and rudeness with unfailing politeness."

Matt makes a good point about us all going into debates biased.
It often surprises me how often youtube debates between religious people and atheists are titled stuff like "x completely crushes y" or "y gets utterly humiliated by x", when in reality, it's balanced debates. Both believers and atheists do that all the time.and it's usually not true in either case.
Then the commenters will say "what are you talking about? y made an incredible point, he dominated x all the way". I catch myself accepting atheist arguments without any research while being very critical towards theist claims, and I guess everyone else does so too

it's partly because we all have different underlying "core" beliefs. for example, some people really do believe, at their core, in authority above all (basically argumentum ad baculum, like Matt mentioned). God can kick my ass, so I'll believe there are 5 lights when there are really 4, and I'm right for doing so.
if you argue with a theist long enough you will generally get to a point where you need to appeal to their honesty. they will have to decide between honesty and religion; unfortunately they generally choose religion. getting them to contemplate that they may in fact be being dishonest is usually the best you can do. we value honesty so much, and that is one reason why we are atheists. they have no such belief at their core.

I disagree with advising people to stay away from bringing up the names of types of arguments or fallacies. Sure, like Matt says, if you don't know what you are talking about, then obviously you shouldn't bring them up. However, I think they should be brought up, or the option at least considered on a "case by case" basis. If you deem that it will just be a waste of time, well then that's up to you. But when you get into debates with people in a common situation (bar, work, etc), it may be the usual case that people don't know about these concepts. They know them as thoughts, but not as categorized, labeled arguments. This is an opportunity for them to learn. If you point out the label, and then explain to them the issue with the argument, you can also explain how these arguments are utilized. It's an opportunity to improve communication, by clarifying definitions of terms. I see no problem with this. It also points out the commonality of the arguments, and shows that these aren't original, or unique concepts, which some people think. Also, they now have the name of the argument, so they can look it up later and get more information about it.

Religion isn't necessarily bad, its a way to live, and a moral to go by. It is a kind of motivation, or something to make people feel they are doing something, devoting their lives. Now that is human nature, and it is a good thing to have a way to live, but religion doesn't have to be that. An atheist could have a religion. not necessarily in a higher being, or God, but a way to live by. Now devoting your life, to something you cant explain, to something with no real evidence, denying things with scientific evidence, and other things literally with the same general moral, same type of beliefs, just different specific things, just because you are reluctant and close minded isn't too good. Now you cant just make religion go away, for it is human nature to make religion, believe in their religions, and to have explanations for things like these. Personally, I amn't (a new proper conjunction, and a proper way to say aint I decided to start using, because why not) sure about whether there is a higher being or not, so for now I like to consider myself an atheist, but am very open minded. I believe even as an atheist, you can have a religion of sorts, but just as a way to live by, and how I should generally live, for example I should do as many good deeds, as I comfort can, without it intervening with more important business, I believe I shouldn't harm others, unless its important for my, or someone else's safety. Just other basic guidelines that could be labeled as a religion of sorts. Even the eleven satanic principals of the world (or something along the lines of that) actually have some pretty good things to live by, that could comfortably make you a decent human being. I actually have been looking in religions, and have found Zoroastrianism very nice, and pure, especially me being a naïve Iranian/Persian twelve year old, just trying to explore the world and beliefs, ill probably just pass through this phase like my mom says. Now my point probably isn't very good, but this is human nature, and its still good to have things that you would want to live by, but not be chained down by, and solely devote my life, and live everything by that. And I am'nt (see I used it again and it works) some edgy middle school Satanist, I just wanna explore, but not make too many big decisions early in life, rather than learn and make a decision later on when I have more knowledge and wisdom like my dad.

For me its easy. When people don't has travel around the world, living with other cultures and believes, they never can decide if that culture is right or wrong. They are brain washed from being a child and have no chance to make up their minds when they older. I am traveling, let say a very long time around the world, adjust to many cultures and believes. I had to do that, don't take me wrong, it was not always easy. But i have to take work to make my money. I am not a professor, but i know my job and was always looking the bright side off life. You learn a lot by that, because you see the real life there. Was sometimes very dangerous, but its on a Dutch highway also, or walking on a market in Shanghai or in Cape Town. Its not important. Live is a risk. Believe in a God many think is safe. Right, tell that the jungle tribes in the Amazon. They have their own believes, and no Pope or Imam can chance that. They live with nature, like we did all before. Dubai? Is a Muslim city, small ok, but with big oil money. So what? That's not the nature they grew up with! Who cares about the highest building in the world in a dessert state with oil money today? Great what the architects were making, all credits, but its not at all important! In Dubai they still have the Sharia, that Muslim old fashion law is killing people, make slavery possible with corrupt Indian consulting companies. That's a crime and modern slavery, point blank.

At first, slavery was one of main points why I disagreed with a bible, now I am starting to view slavery as good. Not slavery as in "You are my property" but along the lines of forced, unpaid workforce. And it would only be applied to prisons where it is clear that criminals are only subjects. Let's be truthful, prisons don't rehabilitate people, rather than using tax money to support them, why not use them as physical laborers.
Also, churches without any decorations are not a minus for me. if they aren't asking for money, then I would trust them more knowing that this church doesn't care about money or looking fancy like ALL OF THE OTHER CHURCHES.

Agnostics and Atheist know how to stop the pain created by being a slave to the natural inclination to believe in the supernatural.
It's like children scaring each other by turning their backs to a mirror with the light off and saying "Bloody Mary, Bloody Mary". A Theist would say "just don't say it three times". An atheist would say "No one who has said it three times was murdered, there is no evidence anything will happen and we can prove that nothing measurable actually HAS happened because here I am and I said it three times. There is no reason to be afraid".
Sure the Atheist would feel the hair stand up on the back of their neck and still feel dread when enacting said ritual, that's instinct not proof of a god. The human condition is complex and looks to find order in unordered subjects.
If a god didn't exist man would have invented him. That invention ALWAY requires a corruption of ones own free will, a dilution of reality, and a lack of basic reasoning. Some of us want, no only for ourselves but for everyone, to not be a slave to worthless instincts. Unlike evolution, superstition actually does make us closer to animals.

      @mozartgenetics 7 років тому

It is possible you did not understand my comment. I simply said that Matt's description of a pastor's workload is not in line with the pastors I have been acquainted with.
Reverend Loran Helm, one of the greatest men I have ever met said in his book, A Voice In The Wilderness, "A pastor is called to the hardest work on earth. If they truly leave all and follow Christ, they will be reviled, hated and despised, ridiculed and face every manner of hardship. Only a few down through history has really left all to follow this still small voice".
I am completely aware that most who say they are pastors are not on this path. But the few who are have a heavy burden to bare. If you wish to sample a few pastors stories who left all for the cause of Christ....I would recommend you read a book called Fox's Book Of Martyrs. None of these people would fit into Matt's description.

Revelation does not consent doubt! (Act 1:3) to whom he also showed himself alive after his passion by many proofs, appearing unto them by the space of forty days, and speaking the things concerning the kingdom of God:
(Jas 1:6) But when you ask for something, you must have faith and not doubt. Anyone who doubts is like an ocean wave tossed around in a storm.

    • @Arlondev

While i see your point, i do not think that you have to first believe something for the proof of that thing to present itself.
If i said "I just got a new dog!", you would probably just take my word, but if i were, say, super allergic to dogs, you would probably doubt me. If i then showed up the next day, with a dog, even if you didnt first have faith that i had a dog, the evidence has presented itself.
Now heres the thing: I am not an omnipotent being. I am not immortal. Every second i spend on earth is precious because there is nothing, no matter what i believe, that awaits me after death.
Why would an all-knowing, all-powerful being with an infinite amount of time on his hands require for us to believe in him, and THEN find proof that he exists? I mean, the Ancient Greeks have moved past such reasoning before they figured out how to forge anything with iron. Imagine that.
And if God created us specifically with the way we reason in mind, or, at least, he was guaranteed to know we would reason in this way, why would he fail to put forward sufficient proof that he exists? Its not like hes busy being God. All he does is put the virgin mary's face onto pieces of toast, and shape cheetos like Jesus. Whats stopping him from descending down in all his glory and saying "I AM GOD! THE CHRISTIAN GOD! THE GOD OF PRESLUTHERBYTERIAGELICALIST CHURCH OF LATTER-DAY WITNESS BAPTISTS! NO OTHER CHURCH IS TRUE!", and bada-bing bada-boom, your religion, and yours alone, is correct.
What we have, is an all-loving being spending his time creating children and babies in 3rd-world countries for the sole purpose of following the wrong religion and going to hell because he failed to create sufficient food.
Even if the Christian God of the KJV were real, the one true God, i would never bend a knee to him. It is for that reason, and for the reason of all that which he has done in the Bible, that he presents himself as a whiny, impotent, useless, powerless fuck-up.
Seriously: Read the KJV again, but every time God does something, think "What would _I_ do?" And by time the flood comes around, youd be an atheist.

He can look up the data on an objective moral statement that is available to everyone and stay with what he is told or learn the rest of the story. It only takes a few minutes to learn the answer to the claim of an objective moral standard? Fortunately no one has to be educated past a 3rd grad level to resolve that data.
But what of the risk? What happens to his family and friends and contacts if he asks and solves another question outside of that collective skill set? Will he be alone or have to start over in life socially?

I went into it hoping that I could find something that helps me understand why people believe it, but I have yet to find any redeeming qualities. Even the famous stories are much less impressive than I expected. The only extra understanding I have gained so far is why so many people lose their faith when they finally decide to read the Bible.

I didn't read the bible very much when I was in the Church for all those years. And even when I left the church, for years after I didn't think there was anything terribly bad in the bible.
Then I read sections of it over the past few years, as a non-believer, and some of it is absolutely gut-wrenching and immoral - mass murder, violence, rape, kidnapping, pillaging - much of it done either with god's blessing or on his command.
I think a lot of Christians are extremely selective when they read the bible. They tend to focus on the "good bits" and largely ignore the "bad bits". But if you actually read the bad bits, it really does make you question the entire foundation of Christianity and wonder how any of it could ever be considered moral by any standard.

For those who God loves saved or unsaved, a Prophetic end time message of the God of Abraham saying is: "TELL THE WORLD I AM COMING SOON ...SPARE NOT MY WORDS." ...is to ask; ...Are you certain that your life's sin are forgiven "through faith in Jesus Christ: to qualify for eternal life?" When God speaks it s for warning, for preparation, and as encouragement to those who have concern for their soul. Quote of KJ; "And this gospel shall be preached to the ends of the earth; and t h e n the e n d will come."
The end is here "in t h i s particular prophetic timing of God" which man has wrongly predicted in past ages simply "for the lack of spiritual discernment of the t i m e s." KJ., The worldwide events today are the biblical "SIGN OF THE TIMES" that the end of the age as we know it is at hand, and which s i g n s will usher in the return of Christ.
You may know and secure your eternal salvation today simply for the asking! Don't wait ...tomorrow may be too late in God's timing. God bless you to this truth! Revivalist Sonja Grinstead...

Matt Dillahunty's believes in nothing , nothing from nothing is nothing. The Law of non- contradiction states that A can't be A and not be A at the same time in the same relationship. Matt begs questions by stating you can't know, therefore, I'm right. Every effect comes from a cause , if words , morals have no meaning or reason for existing, then why debate that they aren't real. One reason , money. Matt Dillahunty only debates for money no other reason. His church members are atheist. Atheism is a religion, anti religion is still a belief and serves it's own propose.

Lisa Pertee Actually the mass that the big bang came from has always been there - you are the one claiming that a god came out of nothing to make it out of nothing - also atheism is the exact opposite of a religion, and we don't have a church since we are not religious.... We dont believe in things that arent real. There is clear evidence that Australia exists even tho i haven't been there so i use my common sense and tell myself that it is real, while no theists have EVER in history provide a single evidence for anything supernatural. And the reason we debate and try convert you from your cult is because you are to more harm than good for the rest of society.

    • @Alessandro-B
      @Alessandro-B 9 років тому +4

Lisa Pertee _"Matt Dillahunty only debates for money no other reason"_
Matt has often stated that if he wanted to make lots of money, the best thing would be to announce he's found god, become the preacher he was _"meant"_ to be, and use his _"popularity"_ to appear with all the usual suspects (the preachers n evangelists n fake healers with the jet planes, diamonds, palatial villas and so on), tell people how he's repented and found the "TRUTH" and he'll be rolling the cash in.
The only thing stopping him doing so is his integrity.
But if one wants to make money, religion is the best bet, a lot of suckers out there willing to hear what they need to hear.
_"Atheism is a religion"_ like off is a TV channel and not playing golf is a hobby.
Anti-religion has become a necessity in a world where religion claims a variety of privileges, like Tax exemptions, and has always stifled scientific discoveries because they annihilate their preposterous myths.
In fact, you are proof of it, attacking Matt's character, rather than his message.

Currently, we can dismiss aliens because there is absolutely no evidence for them. Do you have any evidence you can present for God? I think the discovery of water on certain rocks in space may be more evidence for the possibilities of aliens, more so than any evidence for a God, which seems to be completely non-existent currently. Also, I think that someone who made the statement that there is no God might be classed as an "Anti Theist" rather than an "Atheist".

Here is an example of people Like Matt, and I bet he has said this,.It concerns jesus Crucifixion, and raising from the Dead. While the Bible states a Passover crucifixion, and raising from the dead after 72 hours in the tomb to a Good Friday Crucifixion, and an Easter Sunday Rise from the dead which Christians take as the reason that the Sabbath changed. Passover was on Wednesday, and the first day was the first day but he rose then to Keep the 7th day Sabbath, and not set a new Sabbath. 72 hours in the tomb, and not 26-28 hours. The Sabbath was changed because of a highly prohibited Tax against those the tried to keep the 7th day It would quickly lead to them being fed to the Lions because they could NOT pay the tax.. Nothing in the Bible claims a Good fiday /death, and 26 hours later rising from the dead.

Have you ever considered that being alienated from the author of life for eternity is torment enough.
If being separated from the creator does not disturb you, perhaps you should ask yourself why you love pleasure above God.
Your sin rather than his righteousness.
Every good thing, that makes your life meaningful ultimately comes from God.
Jesus spoke to them again in parables, saying: “The kingdom of heaven is like a king who prepared a wedding banquet for his son. He sent his servants to those who had been invited to the banquet to tell them to come, but they refused to come.
“Then he sent some more servants and said, ‘Tell those who have been invited that I have prepared my dinner: My oxen and fattened cattle have been butchered, and everything is ready. Come to the wedding banquet.’
“But they paid no attention and went off-one to his field, another to his business. The rest seized his servants, mistreated them and killed them. The king was enraged. He sent his army and destroyed those murderers and burned their city.
“Then he said to his servants, ‘The wedding banquet is ready, but those I invited did not deserve to come. So go to the street corners and invite to the banquet anyone you find.’ So the servants went out into the streets and gathered all the people they could find, the bad as well as the good, and the wedding hall was filled with guests.
“But when the king came in to see the guests, he noticed a man there who was not wearing wedding clothes. He asked, ‘How did you get in here without wedding clothes, friend?’ The man was speechless.
“Then the king told the attendants, ‘Tie him hand and foot, and throw him outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’
