The Glarus Landsgemeinde (English)

The Glarner Landsgemeinde - that is a piece of pure democracy and the politically most important day in the life of the people of Glarus. It is also a folk festival, but no political folklore nonsense. Every year on the first Sunday in May, the people of Glarus gather in the open air and for 700 years have voted on the constitution, laws, taxes and important business. Every person entitled to vote may not only express his or her opinion, but also propose amendments. This film shows what the Landsgemeinde is and how it works. And it uses a real example to tell how deeply rooted and identity-forming it is for the country and its people.
