- Hey everyone! Unfortunately Franklins was closed on the day that we tried to eat BBQ food so we ended up trying out Coopers instead! After getting hooked on it, I (Lia) also ate my last BBQ (barbecue) at Salt Lick in the airport which I would go as far as saying was even better than Coopers!

"I haven't even touched the salad."
Ah yes. Now you are getting the true American experience.
I think I have a crush on Lia!😐🙃
🤣🤣 truuuuue. Who has room for salad when you’re eating BBQ? No one. 😂
@Chet its just water
Lol
The BBQ Meat ate my salad, now I’m eating the BBQ Meat..... it’s the circle of life.... some day I’ll be dead and feed plants, worms, and nematodes....
"Don't eat beef"?? Man I'm surprised you didn't get deported from TX.
You must Brexit from Texas immediately.
Don’t say that in Texas you’ll get deported real fast

Keep in mind, Mad Cow Disease is all over Europe. Probably one of the main reasons he doesn't eat beef.
Still, they can't go wrong with Cooper's.
I thought that was illegal in the state of Texas? I’m triggered, no word of a lie!!!!!!
Only Brits would eat BBQ with knife and fork.
When I had a beard, BBQ was eaten with a knife and fork. They have no excuse, though. LOL
I'll stream that I hadn’t thought of that issue! You’re right though! My brother has a beard now and while he’s always been a messy dude, he’s gotten into some MESSES. It was half funny and halfway kinda sad! I’ll advise him on this intel!
How do you eat brisket? With your hands? Savage!
That right there is why we won the war...
Indeed. Some years back, I had a trip to Oxford, England and while there ate at a Pizza Hut. First time, I've ever seen people eat pizza with a knife and fork.
“To be honest it was just normal chicken” yea because you picked all the seasoning off lol
lol
Big brain moment
You get bbq chicken, you *never* take the skin off! Well, I must admit I'm strange. I don't like bbq sauce so I guess that means I'm talking about grilled... Well, either way, all the flavor was in that skin man! (Honestly, they should have found a steakhouse!)
@@mystic_tacos A steakhouse, where he would probably carve away the marbling, scrape off the char, and squeeze out all that yucky pink fluid.
Skin off? Insanity.
There are many people in the south that would say that only Lia had BBQ. Joel had chicken and sausage.
Not just the south, the north would say that too
I'm from the north and completely agree he didn't really have BBQ
He even ditched the skin.... I was shook
Yeah and then he removed the skin from the chicken. He might as well just had boiled chicken because he did not have BBQ at all
Chicken with no skin. Eat a carrot with youth fork a knife
Tf...He took the skin off the chicken?...thats where the rub is..lol
So true but the only thing I smoke with skin on his turkey I typically do boneless skinless chicken breasts one is fairly cheap at least where I'm at and to I don't have to worry about the people that don't like the skin is there a several of them that I allowed to eat my food that don't like it but with boneless skinless they have no choice but to eat it
when I barbque chicken at home I put the rub and the sauce under the skin and let the skin trap it in the meat. very good that way and if folks don't like the skin then it's no waste to not eat it.
J Garner Dude should turn in his man card.
Bill Baldwin don’t know if he ever had one.
I can’t do the skin. I think it’s so effing nasty. Just season the damn skinned chicken man!
I remember coming back from America to the UK after a holiday and being so disillusioned with the service in our country. America for the win when it comes to customer service!!!!
I toured England several decades ago. I'm from Texas. While where I ate was not of my choosing, I found the food mostly inedible. Over a course of 3 weeks there, I lost 10 pounds, which I didn't need to lose. The service was okay. Besides that, I loved England.
@@ibosquez5238 I am thinking that the service and food was subpar because they were servicing busloads of people en mass. They were connected to a travel agency that bundled the services. But the food was bland and not appealing at all. I did get addicted to living on cookies and tea.
cellgrrl I’m glad you loved it. That makes me happy 😃
Tips and gratuity keep the customer service rolling.

Glad she asked for less fatty cut too! Fatty brisket is gross and almost makes me stop eating it.

Skin is the best part of that chicken. It wasn’t “special” because he ditched the best part.
Yea discarding the skin in bbq, you're doing it wrong. The bark is the flavor!!!
I definitely agree, Skin is a must!

Only if it is done correctly. I have seen some nasty skin.
The trick to good skin is making sure it's crispy.

When Lia's eyes rolled back after her first bite of brisket you knew she was hooked.

I hate it when people from other countries call fast food American food. THIS is American food. And I can make a better burger on my grill than McDonald’s could ever hope to make. Gotta love how these two are so open minded. Most Europeans from the continent are kind of rude about Americans and everything American. But Brits at least are willing to give us a chance.
There are so many "American Foods" that are so amazingly delicious, that it "grinds my gears" when self-hating Americans themselves states all American food is fast food. I created a list of strictly 30 american dishes off memory, and the person on the discussion board never responded. Sad....I love going to parts of the states (I am from California) and trying their regional food....when I went to New England, I ate nothing but seafood. Montana and South Dakota...wild game meats and Native American type dishes. Louisiana has all the creole stuff, Texas has beef bbq and chili, etc etc etc. Even foods we "take for granted," i.e. Key Lime Pie, Eggs Benedict, A good Cheeseburger off your home grill, are pure American contributions.
P.S. No, I'm not an Elitist. I went to Scotland and loved all of the fresh Lamb dishes, Haggis, Fish and Chips, and salmon. :)
Amen to that.
You're the one with the prejudice
@@asianguy6174 Why, because he said a bunch of Europeans are "kind of rude about Americans"? Polls show that anti-American attitudes are fairly strong in Europe and have been growing for decades. To say they're "kind of rude" is more than fair.

Pretty sure its pig intestine.
@@DanButcher303 minced pork, beef, or other meats, often combined, together with various added ingredients and seasonings, usually stuffed into a prepared intestine or other casing and often made in links. The most popular casings for sausages are made from the cleaned intestines of animals, most notably, pigs, sheep and cows. These are called “natural casings”
@@VOID_DEATH I just said that. Im literally a butcher, have been for 25 years
@@DanButcher303 wait. I thought most sausage had a synthetic casing? I know that intestines used to be the norm. And that if you wanted, you actually have the butcher use an intestine. But I didn't think most sausages in the modern era were intestines.
@@k_tess Items that come fully cooked are generally made with synthetic casings. I've never seen a raw sausage with a synthetic casing. The exception is breakfast sausage. This exception is due to lack of natural lamb casings. Americans dont harvest enough lamb to meet the demand of the breakfast staple. I grew up working at a small local butcher shop and have since moved to a national retailer.
It’s called cobbler because the dough is dropped on top of the filling by the spoonful and it bakes up to resemble a cobblestone street.

Your wife is a "keeper"! Cherish that woman.
UGG I miss the salmon from Russian river! I just miss Alaska I guess 😂
The original Coopers in Llano is probably where she gets it. I do like the Fort Worth one but no one beats the Llano location
I'm laughing because Lia used a knife and fork to eat the rib. Here in the south we use our hands to hold on to both ends and bite the meat off of the bone.

Texas? Pretty much everywhere in the U.S.
LOL I'm fairly sure the South didn't invent using hands for ribs. It's just posh Brit manners rearing it's head here.
@fluttie64 - That's what I thought. But, you beat me to it. Ribs are supposed to be a bit messy.
Right? If I'd happened by and saw that I'd have snickered and straight up asked them, "you ain't from around here, huh?" Then with good natured southern hospitality set her on the right path and assured her it was just fine to get her pretty fingers messy with that rib.
As an American, your guys' reaction to the first bites brought a literal smile to my face. Bless you guys for being so excited and open to trying everything!! Love it

Who in the hell goes to try bbq for the first time and orders “chicken” ?? Chicken isn’t bbq and never will be. Then, to use a fork on ribs ?
Randy Porter I had a Brit sit next to me here in STL AT A BBQ joint and tried eating burnt ends and ribs with a fork. I laughed at her and asked if she was scared to get dirty. Told her get in there and use her fingers.

I was driving through TX and stopped for BBQ. It was late and we still had to drive a few hours that night. We were also low on funds but decided we could afford a single slice of chocolate pie and coffee. The waitress brought us two huge pieces of pie and say “if you’re going to be driving tonight y’all need pie. It isn’t really “fair” to say that the chicken was nothing special. You did take the skin off. Not knocking it, but otherwise you just have a smoked breast of chicken. The rub, the seasoning, is all on the skin.
Just randomly found this video. I do hope you guys enjoyed the hospitality of Texas. Much ❤️ from Texas.
Kacey Dillin is this the one in Llano Texas?
No, this looks to be the Forth Worth one. Llano is way more rustic. :)

why would anyone eat BBQ and then order chicken?
@@CountCulture27 The Holding Oven at Cooper's Llano is outside but still under roof. I hate the seating at that location; "continental dining" (meaning sharing of your table with other parties of strangers; although, it makes for interesting conversation) at long wooden Picnic Tables with FIXED BENCHS. I'm a large man and I have to sit sidesaddle on them. When they first entered the restaurant, I thought it was James Beard Award Winning "Louis Mueller Barbecue" in Taylor TX until I saw Cooper's logo on the brick wall, a similar building interior. BTW, traditionally Louis Mueller served it's Cue with either White Bread or Saltine Crackers and absolutely no Barbecue Sauce, nothing but Vinegar with Crushed Peppers or simple prepared Hot Sauces like Krystal or Louisiana. IDK. A cow is a cow. People have their own tastes
A cow might be a cow, but if you don't cook it right .... One thing I discovered in Europe is they don't buy aged meat for some reason. Sailed as a merchant Mariner and the butcher in Greece was surprised we wanted the aged beef for the BBQ we were having on the pier.
Probably Boiled British beef...ugh! Or Pot Roast...Not the best. I can see a big slab of unmentionable, unremarkable beef hitting the oven for several hours and then falling apart when you slice it. No flavor, just digestible matter and protein. Heaven knows, I'm in America and had that more than once growing up. It was the Baby Boomers and their parents who invented that concept. Post WWII utopia and such. A roast in every oven sort of thing.

@@gatorhead7414 i know THAT'S right
Joel & Lia are now officially official honorary Americans! 🌶🍗🍺🍺
Besides the meats & mac'n'cheese, ya cannot forget: (most important at a "Southern" BBQ) Deviled Eggs, Potato Salad, Pasta (usually Elbow macaroni) Salad, Baked Beans, Cole Slaw, "Fried" Corn on the Cob, Collard Greens, Candied Jalapenos, & Creamed Corn. And for desert: Banana Pudding, Boozy Fruit Salad, & Watermelon.
And depending on who you talk to, creamy mac n cheese is NOT "southern"... it has to be "casserole" style where it's kind of chunky with chunks of cheese and the egg/milk/cheese mixture and the noodles as separately visible. For me, though, creamy mac n cheese is where it's at.
And if you're talking pulled pork bbq, you can't forget rice and hash. Hash is basically ground up pork into a soupy, saucy mixture with seasonings. I personally don't like it. And bread! Can't have bbq without bread!! Even if it's plain sliced white bread.
Yesss
I've not herd of candied jalapeño? Sounds yummy!
Being from Cincinnati, that's a long list of foods that sound foreign, almost none of which are liked by everyone across the country. I'm close enough to the South to have tried most of them. A couple of those things are common everywhere, possibly in different forms, but I've never tried fried corn on the cob, collard greens, candied Jalapenos, and never heard of Boozy Fruit Salad (whatever that is), though I'm sure I'd like at least a couple of them. Though I've had multiple forms of Southern Barbecue, I've had (Americanized) Chinese and Mediterranean food a lot more.
AlienBarbers fried corn on the cob and collard greens are the best
You want fat on the brisket to give it more flavor.
@Aeox no you cook brisket fat side up so the juice goes from the fat down into the meat,,it gives the meat more flavor and makes it tender.
You cut the fat off after the meat rests
It absolutely is not a good brisket if you cut the fat off before it cooks period
After cooking, the fat is gelatin.
Brits don't appreciate flavor as evidenced by their bland unimaginative local cuisines.
Ehh I get it. I know the fat is where the flavor is but I HATE the texture
Yeah taking skin off the chicken took away most of the flavor and smoke from the BBQ. You kind of have to throw your healthy sensibilities out the window with traditional BBQ.
My heart sank when he ordered the chicken- it’s never as good and the beef is what Texas BBQ is famous for!
Lots of BBQ places are closed on Mondays, that's the day they clean out their fire pits.
Texas hospitality is hard to BEAT...even in a BBQ joint!
Warm peach cobbler with a scoop of vanilla ice cream is the best
Amen to that
Peach cobbler is the best dessert ever invented. Followed closely by ice cream.
Peach Cobbler is the best ever; bar none. You should try it in Peach County, GA. That's peach central.
I love everyone in this comment thread for making sense. Peach cobbler is love
You mean cobbler soup.
Glad you enjoyed that! I wouldn’t advertise that you don’t eat beef while standing in a Texas BBQ place. You might start a riot and get tarred and feathered. Cobbler as a dessert actually derives from the shoe repair definition. A cobbler is a fruit pie with one cakelike crust in a deep dish. It comes from early American history when the woman of the house didn’t have the time to make pie crust and would just “cobble something together.” What you are referring to as a crumble, we have too, it’s a little different. The crust is more of loose, dry topping that gets browned a little and isn’t thick or cakey. And hang onto your hats, we call that a “crisp.” Apple crisp, peach crisp, etc. There’s also Apple Brown Betty which is similar. “Pecan” is pronounced “puh CONN” in the North and “PEE can” in the South.
texan here.... definitely puh conn
Nope. In the South we say Puhcohn. Never Pee Can.
Mac and cheese is a American favorite period! plus it goes with just about anything...
I agree with Matthew but in addition in the South Mac and cheese is considered a vegetable and gravy is a beverage.
@@glensims3744
And, that's why the South lost the Civil War. Hahahahahahhaha!!!
Fried okra was needed
@Bad Cattitude come home lol
What is Mac and cheese?
My brother who is living in the U K and from Texas, introduced all his friends to Texas Bar-b-que.

This is encouraging :) I would assume alot of people from the UK would stick their noses up at this kind of food. It was really cool to see how open y'all were to trying it. Definitely great comfort food. God bless!
I am loving your Texas vlogs!!!!!!! Watching y’all experience what we have available to us every day is so fun to watch. Great job Joel and Lia!

Lia’s face was precious.. like wow!
Great video. I have been to Texas a few times and love the barbeque. Interesting note, on our news last night they reported that young children in the US are speaking with British accents, apparently picking it up from watching the cartoon series Peppa Pig, made in England. It is very funny to see all these 4 and 5 year olds speaking with British accents!
Hugh Sonk This is a real thing! Both my nephew and a little guy I know speak proper British randomly.
Thanks for this fun video! There are actually several different distinct styles of American BBQ, depending on the city or region you're in. Different regions use different sauces, for example, between Texas, St. Louis, Kansas City, Chicago, and North and South Carolina. Different regions and cities will even emphasize different meats. Texas is big on brisket, for example, but the Carolinas favor pulled pork, and Chicago, St. Louis and Kansas City emphasize ribs.
Which style for the best has been open to discussion for a long while.
No consensus has been reached
Like styles of chili, which style of barbecue is usually a matter of exchanging fighting words. And it's not just the US where you can find some amazing barbecue in the Americas: when I visited Tegucigalpa in Hoduras, my hosts took me to a fantastic Hoduran barbecue (El Patio) that I could easily have just moved into, never to eat anywhere else again. I love all kinds of Barbecue, but that is easily in the top five best barbecue restaurants I've ever eaten at - well played, Honduras! Here in the U.S., I've also had some fantastic barbecue at restaurants run by Peruvian immigrants as well... I suspect there are some great barbecue styles to be found all over Central and South America.
Didn’t mention Memphis crazy
"Dont like beef" He should've tried it i bet it'll change his mind afterwards.
JustAPerson Maybe the beef doesn’t, in fact, like him? I know a lot of people who have stomachs that can’t take beef.
Perhaps that is why he didn't want to try it. Because he was worried he would like it.
Y’all need to come LOUISIANA AND TRY SOME CAJUN FOOD .. we aren’t far from Texas
Well, If they were in Houston... they could at least get to Lafayette, LA for a taste of crawfish in all its delicious forms... and since they are there... they could get to New Orleans. Then... they will never leave, and my evil plan will have succeeded!
guido No offense intended but I think Cajun food is overrated.
Cracklin's forever!
Definitely try cajun food. Unique! Delicious ❤️
YES!
Mac and cheese is always great with BBQ. Especially when the sauce and drippings mix in with it. 😋
I have many British friends and I never get tired of seeing them eat something new here. You both crack me up!
There are so many different kinds of BBQ. It varies from state to state and from cook to cook 😁
Yes! Texas is cattle country so they feature more beef. I'm in SC so it's more pork based bbq. Different sauces. Carolina gold is mustard based bbq sauce.
I second that comment.
@@mialee7254 South Carolina here . I love pulled pork bbq with mustard sauce , also Eastern NC style . Maurice's Piggy Park is delicious .
@@victorwaddell6530 I'm upstate SC. The only thing I dont like is the traditional vinegar bbq. But rubs and sauces are great!
Mississippi/Tennessee bbq is sorta sweet and hot at the same time. Love a drop of Tabasco sauce in mine!

You gotta put vanilla ice cream on peach cobbler it's ultimate.
the words "unfortunately" and "coopers" can never be used in the same sentence! i go to that location all the time and theyre amazing
She ate her meat then her pudding. Roger Waters would approve.
Yes, I would consider Mac & Cheese to be a normal side with BBQ , also, Cole Slaw, and BBQ Baked Beans.
Tabfort You will find pinto beans in Texas not baked beans.
Tabfort Yep, that’s the trifecta right there.
Amen Tabfort👍
@@judykeown And that is why Texas BBQ will always come in second to KC BBQ for me. I cannot stand pinto beans. My mom is from Texas and they were a staple for her. Really, KC BBQ is throughout the state of Kansas. Up here (Wichita) we have a place called Hog Wild BBQ that I love.
In southwest Va. and East Tenn. we typically refer to pinto beans as soup beans, and we eat a lot of them with things like corn bread, fried potatoes, and such, but we don’t normally eat them with BBQ.
No no... texas definitely has better bbq! Im smoking 2 briskets, 3 whole chickens and sausage this weekend! 😁
It looks like it I have to admit, never seen a set up like that here in California. I want to go to Texas now!
@@rmora1 That"s a VERY broad not to mention rude statement.
I travel for work and have tried BBQ all over the country and the brisket in Texas is the best. Kansas City is a close second but Texas wins!
rmora1: wherever you are from must sell brisket made from God’s personal cattle for you to hate on Texas brisket. I love Texas BBQ. What state are you from?
Texas has some good BBQ, but every place has there own take on BBQ so it varies from person to person.
I’m not even from Texas or American but I’m still watching British people eat American food

The Texas BBQ experience is the best. The problem is there are so many places that are good . Lived in Texas all my life and trying different places takes more than one lifetime .
My mouth is watering watching this video! Definitely going for some BBQ today! You made great choices. So glad you enjoyed it!
While tourists can find BBQ (Barbecue) pretty much all over the United States, there are, however, FOUR (4) well known "States" that come to mind when talking about BBQ Variations and Style...
* Texas
* North Carolina
* Tennesse
* Missouri
Although the term “barbecue” is widely used to describe any occasion of backyard meat grilling, a more accurate description of the technique is any meat that has been cooked for a lengthy period of time (ranging between 4-18 hours) over low, indirect heat. The differences lie in the particular animal (Beef for most of Texas & Pork Everywhere Else) the cut of meat (Ribs, Roast, Brisket) the type of wood (and therefore smoke) used to impart flavor, the cooking time and temperature, the preparation of the meat, and the accompanying spices, rubs, or sauces.
Texas is more known for their 'dry rub', whereas the other states are more known for their 'liquid rub'....
Yes, we have pork, chicken and sausage here in Missouri, but beef is a mainstay. You do understand that KC is famous for both beef and bbq? Kc was the heart of the nation's cattle industry.
@@johnbratcher8398 LOL. You do know where all that beef came from right?
Those "Four well known "States"" being...
East Texas
West Texas
South Texas
and the Hill Country
I'm an American, but Appalachian, not even Mid-Western---but I'm 99% sure by "KC" the above poster means Kansas City....which is on the border between Missouri and Kansas.
Carolina style BBQ can refer to either North or South Carolina. And between the two states there are 3 or more distinct styles. I happen to prefer the thicker mustard sauce that is more common in the southern half of South Carolina.
To make a cobbler, you cobble the ingredients together.
Don't try to explain the word to the Brits, they just don't understand the English language. LMAO
They actually do have cobblers(food) in the UK, these two are apparently just not aware of it. In the US, cobblers(food) date back to the original 13 English colonies, so it's not strictly an American thing.
@3:15 "they're so helpful in here as well."
Welcome to Texas. Come back anytime:)
I always turn to jelly whenever I hear a gorgeous woman speaking with a British accent!
Oh my goodness so sweet to see your expressions when you taste the BBQ for the first time. What we takeoff granted.

He doesn't like beef because in England they feed their cattle fish meal so naturally it tastes fishy.
God, the beef dishes I had in england (with the exception of one place that microwaved an unseasoned piece till it was hard..) were all excellent, the milk and cheeses were the best tasting, all the beef was grass fed.
