These book vise and plough are incredibly versatile tools for bookbinding. One side of the press has tapered edges, which are useful for a variety of bookbinding tasks, such as aligning signatures, spine shaping, edge gilding and separating linen cord among other things.
If you flip the vise around, the other side has square edges with a groove specifically designed to fit a cutting plough, allowing you to trim paper very cleanly. This makes it easy to switch between marking, trimming, and other tasks without needing different tools, streamlining your bookbinding projects and enhancing efficiency. The cutting plough ensures that your edges are trimmed perfectly, maintaining the quality and precision of your work.
Throughout the process of making a book, you’ll find yourself using these tools constantly.

Between a well made book plough AND the right blade, sharpened correctly, there's no limit to the precision and quality that could be achieved. I am impressed. 👍
You came out with all these building plans just as I was entering the point in my bookbinding journey where I would need them! Now I just have to figure out how to get these project files cut for me since I don’t have my own wood shop 😂
A beautiful set of tools, Linn. And detailed, complete plans! Thank you for making these available. Good video.
A suggestion for a future video - how to make a straight-grained 1 1/2" hardwood dowel without a lathe. LOL!
Haha that's something to think about. And thanks John!
I built my daughter a lying press and plow for her binding projects. I wanted a 2-1/2 inch 2 tpi thread but the tools were crazy expensive so I just carved them by hand with a saw, chisel, and file. It wasn't difficult, just tedious.
Wow, I'm sure that was quite the process. Interesting.
Love these. And the press!
Thank you! Yes, the press might be my favorite too.
Rather than a block plane blade what about an Olfa circular blade used in sewing. It has a mounting hole and is scary sharp right out of the package.
I see what you mean, however those blades are really thin and I think you need something thicker and more substantial to be able to cut through the paper. Also, you're limited how much you can sharpen those blades.
@@darbinorvar Try one, I think you will be surprised. Also, they are disposable. Being round, I expect you could turn them a number of times before the whole thing was blunted. Then just toss it like a razor blade.
Great presentation. Could the book vise be constructed with 1 1/2 inch wooden screws or possibly the same Acme thread metal screw system used in the book press?
Thanks! Yes, in the plan I go over how to substitute with 1 1/2" screws. Metal screws is definitely another option too.
Very nice
You should teach courses on book binding.
