Its basically about finding one's voice and being free from oppression, a burning voice from inside that threatens to eat her alive of wch she refuses to die alive. The lyrics are about a person who has struggled to find their voice due to various factors, such as societal expectations//opressions etc In ths song Sia makes constant ref to the existence of some internal voice, a "scream inside" a voice she says eleveryone tries very hard to hide, and the struggle to hold on tight to deny the pain we feel when our wings are clipped and we cannot fly. However, the climax of the song is about finding that inner voice, that scream, and shouting it out like a bird set free, not giving a damn what ppl think "i dont care if i sing off key, I sing for love i sing for me". The metaphor of a bird set free is reminiscent of the transformative journey of a bird being freed from a cage. It's representative of the feeling of release and liberation that comes with finding your voice buried deep within you and the liberation tjat come with being freed from bondage. I find the message of the song relevant to anyone who has ever suffered some form of opression, that if they dont speak out the inner voice "will eat them alive" . Sia is SO inspirational! I listened to this song over and over because this song made me hear my mom’s voice and I cried over it because my mom always told me to “stand out” and “don’t be afraid” and “ sing for you not for them” so this song was powerful to me. (And my mom died 5 months ago)
