- I came across this previously painted buffet and decided to apply Retique It on the top instead of stripping the paint and sanding to bare wood. Retique It is a major time saver!

Yours is the best demo video I’ve seen, thanks 👍🏼
Thank you for showing what product to us and how to use it. It's been almost impossible to find a video explaining what paints to use and how to use them to get the wood grain look. It has been so frustrating so thank you, thank you, thank you!
Best explanation I’ve seen for this! Thank you! It looks fantastic!
That piece turned out so beautifully!!!
This is beautiful!! Love the color.
My kit has the light color primer, dark kona stain, and a epoxy top coat if needed. Do not have a dark and light primer ?
I like the way yours turned out however do I need to order a dark primer also ? I think you are running the graining tool through your light primer. The instructions I have is to use one coat of stain after two coats of primer are on the use the grain tool. When you use the grain tool on your third coat of light primer after not sure what you used on your first two coats. I like it because the grain tool shows off the dark primer under your light color primer. Then your stain. Trying to see what you used on your first two coats. I also bought the Varathane stain Kona to coat after.
Outstanding results. Bravo!
I feel like the Retique it liquid wood kit I bought Off of Amazon was more watery and less pigmented than the ones I have seen used here on UA-cam(yes I did shake & stir well)
Great tutorial thank you!❤
If I wanted this darker, would I just do another layer of stain?
Best job for this product
Will this fill in the oak grain on cabinets? I would like to cover up the oak grain
I tried it, ordered it direct so it wasn’t a knock off. It looks great on UA-cam and I can see why it could be a miracle for some projects but I thought the light base color I got was not really light and honestly just a hideous tone. Texture wise it feels like chalk paint. I ended up doing a whitewash over it since I disliked the color so much. The gel stain they sent me was very watery, and there didn’t seem to be any residue to mix in. I would not use this product again.
I'm sorry to hear you weren't a fan. Retique it's gel stains typically require multiple coats, especially the lighter stains. This is why I mainly use varathane's premium stains. They are oil based and work wonderfully with Retique It. If you have leftovers, try playing around a bit with different stains and see if you like the outcome better
@@deerrunrevamps I have a lot leftover! Good idea to try another brand of stain. Thanks!
I have a question has anyone actually used this on kitchen cabinets and how did it hold up
Is there a smaller graining tool? I have lots of small board pieces less than a inch long.
Do you have a recommended top coat to use with this particular stain? Thanks!
I prefer waterbased topcoats...the Retique It Tripletique or general finishes high performance topcoat are my go to's. I also use wax a lot. Just be sure to allow the stain at least 72 hours to dry before applying the waterbased topcoat
So you start with the traill edge of the tool resting on the surface, then as you pull across the surface and reach the point where you want to create the grain irregularity, you roll the tool to the leading edge , then back to the trail while continuously dragging it ?
Yes. Start at one end and drag it across the surface. When you rock it from side to side while dragging it, you'll get a different size knot and irregularities. When you drag it straight across keeping the tool level, you'll get a more uniform look. After each pass, wipe the tool off, then do it again
Can you please list the colors used from begin to end. Was that a bleached wood paint or the light wood?
The first step is applying dark liquid wood-2 coats allowing to dry in-between coats. Then I applied 1 coat of light liquid wood and ran the graining tool through while still wet. After dried, I stained with varathane premium fast dry stain in Kona 😁

Thinking of using this on my damaged wood floors, thoughts??
You certainly can, just be sure to seal it with a super durable topcoat meant for flooring. And retique it is waterbased, so if you use a topcoat that's anything other than waterbased, wait 72 hours after applying the retique it
Can you confirm the first two primer coats were 'dark' and not the light wood? I'm shopping on the site and it looks like a much lighter color. I want to make sure I get it right ;) And what is color #2?
Dark wood was my base and light wood was the coat I ran the graining tool through
Can you tell me why you need to do dark and light liquid wood before the stain? Could you use two light or two dark before the stain for the same effect?
If you did just one color of liquid wood and then stained it, you've have that single color. Doing the one color, then the other and running the graining tool through allows the first color to peak through
If I am doing a table with an insert do I separate the two pieces with a gap or have the pieces joined up
I prefer to do it while they are joined together so that the wood grain matches up
Bummer that you didn’t show it finished with a top coat
Is it durable, or looks great in beginning and horrible in a year or two?
Yes, it's durable. Just be sure to clean and stuff up your surface very well. This ensures good adhesion. While I don't have the piece in this video, I do have a couple pieces and a door done with Retique It in my home. It's been 3 years and all 3 still look like I just did it. If your surfaces will be getting daily abuse, I do recommend sealing with a durable waterbased topcoat
@@deerrunrevampsthank you
Can I use a roller to apply and a wipe on stain? Or does it have to be a brush? I’m terrible with brushes and have not so good hands
For stains, I prefer rags or paper towels, but use brushes from time to time. A roller would be fine as well, just be sure to go back and wipe off excess stain
Wow.
If the piece is already dark, should I use the dark or light Retique-it covering before staining?
Retique is like a paint, it covers the surface completely, so the color of the piece before applying Retique It doesn't make a difference
@@deerrunrevamps Thank you. I was actually referring to the color of Retique because they offer light and dark. Do I use the dark Retique on dark furniture and light Retique on light furniture or does it even matter?
@@RaphaelAshanti no, that doesn't matter. Dark retique it simply gives a darker color while the light gives a lighter color, regardless of the surface color
Did you sand the top before painting?
Before applying Retique It, I only do a quick scuff sand using 220 grit sandpaper to rough up the surface
Where can I get the graining tool? I found retique it on Walmart but its not a kit with a tool its only a gallon.
Hello 😁
We do offer the kit in our Etsy shop as well as everything separately. Here is the link to our shop

I bought light wood from Amazon and it look like crunchy peanut butter. It drys up and it supposed to be creamy.
I always recommend purchasing from a Retique It retailer. I have heard of others who purchased from Amazon have the same issue and some are able to get it creamy again using a hand mixer
Im interested to have a set of those!
Somebody, where or what site can i order?
Im from the Phillipines, i hope somebody can help me.
Was So Amaze to this Product! So convenient and easy!
Well o don’t know if they ship international , but the site is Retique it.com . Look for the same brand at you Walmart too
Someone please tell me the best top coat for a table. Table will be used by kids and toddlers. What is hard and won't scratch?
I personally prefer Retique It Tripletique topcoat. It is extremely durable. You'll want to do 3-4 coats for a table top
I did the same color as you and for some reason it was sticking and I’m not sure… it’s like when I was laying the stain down it was like pulling up it wouldn’t stay.. if that makes sense
You don't want to go over it too many times, when you're removing the excess stain, only go over it once, maybe twice.. going over it too many times will lift the stain.
After the surface has dried for 72 hours, you can go over it again with the stain
@@cmm02104 I couldn’t go over it at all as soon as I put the stain down it would lift up and I did the same thing this video did.. I contacted the maker of Retique it Michelle but I never got a response so I contacted somebody else that uses Retique it Liquid wood a lot and she said that the weather could’ve been a factor …it was very hot and muggy yesterday so now I have to sand and do all over again which is fine.. it’s all a learning process I guess 🙂
@@cmm02104 thanks for the tips
what if you have spots of patched wood? Does that matter? I’m presuming and hoping the liquid wood paint will cover that.
Unfortunately, any flaws will still show. Best advice I can give is to fill the areas first with either Bondo or wood filler, and then sand smooth. Then you can apply the Retique It with no problems
Deer Run Revamps LLC Furniture Refinishing Services I should have been more clear. I’ve patched it already with DAB plastic wood filler and it’s been sanded smooth.
Also, if I use the Varathane premium fast drying stain will i use an oil based top coat or can I use a water based top coat? I hate working with oil base but I just don’t love any of the retique stains! The closes one I like is their “weathered” which is a gray but it seems super light. maybe if I use the dark liquid wood the stain would be more to my liking??
Ahhh ok! Gotcha! The dark liquid wood does give you a bit deeper results, bit I find the varathane to be the best option if you want that deep dark color. You can use a waterbased topcoat over the oil based varathane stains, just wait 72 hours in between the 2
Deer Run Revamps LLC Furniture Refinishing Services Thank you so much for your help and taking the time to make the videos. You’re truly a great help!
Thank you for watching! ♥️
When you seal it, does the table have a smooth feeling or can you feel the grain?
You can feel the grain. The amount the grain is raised depends on how thick you apply that top layer of Retique It. If you apply it super thin, it won't be as raised
@@deerrunrevamps thx! And if I like the lighter color, I don't have to stain it right? Just seal it?
@@wildflower7321 absolutely 😁
I liked it best before the dark color was put on.
What do you recommend to seal it with after the stain?
I prefer Frenchic's wax for accent pieces and Frenchic's Finishing Coat for high traffic pieces. But any wax or topcoat will work. Just remember to wait at least 72 hours in between stain and topcoat if using an oil based stain and a waterbased topcoat, or vice versa
@@deerrunrevamps So are you saying you can use an oil base stain and then a water base top coat or water base stain and then an oil base top coat? Do you suggest using an oil base stain then an oil base top coat vice versa water base stain with water base top coat... I'm so confused
@@jennypena4679 you can use any top coat or stain, you just need to wait at least 72 hours in between using water based and oil based products.
So if you want to use an oil based stain and water based topcoat (or vice versa), wait 72 hours in between the stain and topcoat.
I personally prefer all water based products. It's easier to cleanup, little to no odor, and they're usually easier to apply.
@@cmm02104 Thank you so much for the info....I really like the Java and kona oil base stain but yes that is a terribly long time to wait.... so I'm trying to find a water base that I like although I did see that rustoleum dark walnut says gel stain and only takes 1hr to dry so that's something I might be interested in, whether it's oil or water based idk, do you know? The color I'm looking for I think may only take 1 coat of that and maybe 2 coats of top coat...
@@cmm02104 and I'm planning on putting over lightly sanded unfinished poplar wood cabinets...I forgot to have them leave some samples to test. I don't want to make an expensive mistake you know.
When painting your results will look better if you paint and stain the entire length of your top not half and half random etc. I can see your over lap
