Thank you for highlighting the phenomenal Sepp Kuss. He has long ridden quietly in support of the JV superstars, and it's time the world took notice of this young man. Hopefully Vuelta 2023 has given him the confidence to realize he is more than just a super domestique and he decides to perhaps step into the GC leader role. Great comment, thank you, I think Sep Kuss is a great rider overall, he has done a great domestique work since he is riding to Jumbo by helping Jonas and Primoz to get victories in the the grand tours like France and Giro and I think he deserves the championship title of La Vuelta regardless his team mates return back the favour. On the other hand because Sepp looks like a great guy, he has shown humbility and profesionalism, great spanish speaker and like often to share his victories with the people and fans by doing the high five, something remarkable that a few riders don't.
I think the only missing piece for Sepp's arsenals is his speed in flats and ITT. Currently, he is not considered as one of the fastest in this category even so comparing to Jonas and Primos. but I hope we can see him improve in this categories
Terrific recap of the dedicated support and riding this truly admirable American has done for his teammates. So awesome to witness him step up to the red jersey! Kudos to Jumbo Visma for promoting these kinds of possibilities for their riders 🙌🖤💛
Thank you so much for this video highlighting the superb riding skills and toughness of Sepp Kuss throughout his career and in the Grand Tours particularly. Obviously the "nice guy" has done some gifting of his own in the past and has definitely worked hard enough to win the Vuelta this year. G. Thomas and most of the Vuelta peloton apparently agrees with you too and they know more than me. Always enjoy your videos and commentary.
Sepp showed himself as a total class act, gracious and humble... His Vuelta victory was a testament to his tenacity and class, his good nature and strength of character shown through even as Primoz and Jonas, tried to wrestle the jersey from his shoulders, a traitorous act if there ever was one. Sepp is truly a great champion
Of note Sepp's father is Dolph Kuss who is a legend in the Durango area. He was Nordic ski coach for the U.S. Ski Team from 1963 through 1972, coached the US cross-country skiers at the 1964 Olympics and the American Nordic combined skiers at the 1972 Olympics. He is now in his 90's. Pretty much anyone involved in bike/ski/run/river sports in Durango knows Dolph. Now they know Sepp.
Thanks. No average domestique that's for sure! and it shows he does have a killer instinct! 😊 He's paid his dues & shown he could be a GC leader now in the right team all backing him... but which one? His stock is surely to rise.
@TheAcholi How many of those with 'higher ceilings' actually showed that this Vuelta? Anyway, there's more than 10 teams in the grand tours, and I'm getting tired of the same team leaders and expected winners. For Sepp it would be more of a mental adjustment to be top dog, but for greater interest in the sport, I'd love to see him give it a crack! 😅
@@TheAcholi Oh? Literally not a single rider, other than his own teammates, were able to crack him in the vuelta. In a field including the likes of Remco, Enric, and wunderkind Ayuso. And this was his 3rd grand tour this year!

I think either Jonas or Primoz could have won La Vuelta ahead of Sepp. But this was a superb way to say thanks for Sepp’s huge and vital help in other Grand Tours! Respect!
He is not only great rider , he is a humble person and loyal to his teammates. JV winning TDF without Sepp would not happen and so do primo win too . I can’t say the same for primo and Jonas .
Sepp Kuss is an amazing cyclist. I always believe in his abilities as a GC rider. He should stop being a domestique and go for his own achievements and aspirations so we could see his full potential while he is still prime.
GC Kuss is clearly alive right now. As for other tours, though, now that he has more confidence it seems to depend mostly on his ITT skills. Unlike Remco, Jonas, Tadej and Roglič his body isn’t very well suited to TTs. He’s said in the past that this is one of the reasons he chose not to become a GC rider himself as trying to improve his TT skills was no fun. Will be interesting to see if that has also changed now he’s seen how this might be a decisive factor for what he wants to do next, given how he’s grown into the leader’s jersey in other respects these past two weeks.
Seems to have a stretchier neck than most as he seems to have the most upright head when on the drops of anyone else. In fact that's how I can usually spot him on TV.
For the current situation, I see the team's point. They have 3 guys who can win easily. Do Jonas and Primoz take three weeks easy and let Sepp win, simply because Sepp was the first of the three to get a gap?
No. He held his own in the TT, didnt crack even once-something almost unheard of and none of the other two rode 3 GTs this year. He is deserving winner.
Yeah, he’s shown he can win without having a Sepp Kuss to support him. I just wish people would stop saying 1) that he’s only in the lead cos he got lucky in a breakaway. Not true. TJV put half their team in that breakaway precisely to bump up Sepp’s GC position, and for him to win the stage; 2) that he was betrayed/stabbed in the back on the Angliru, cos that’s not what happened. As Remco predicted, what did happen was that TJV consolidated their podium sweep by almost tripling the time distance to no 4 in GC Ayuso. Sure there’ve been some conflicting interests for them to work through since the ITT especially, but TJV does this better than the rest of the WT teams. That’s one of the main reasons they’re so dominant.
@@rdklkje13 I wish people would also stop saying this is some gift. He did what people protecting a time lead do. He managed the gap. He did it in the ITT. He did it again on Tourmelet (and I think its objectively true he was the strongest rider in the race at that point). He then did it again on Angliru. He did what winners do. He got the times where it mattered.
Great piece! No rider should have to race his own team to keep his Jersey! Being betrayed be your own teammates has to hurt inside. Even though Sepp seemed ok with it, mark my words he wasn't ok with it. He keep his mouth shut like a great team member. Seeing Sepp getting stabbed in the back was hard to watch especially after everything he has done for both Prizmo and Jonas. Actually it made me sick to my stomach.
You still dont get it. Roglic and Vingegaard are driven racers, and there is a rivalry between the two, THEY ARE RACING AGAINST EACH OTHER. They both like to see Kuss win but they have a hard time seing the other captain in front. So they fight for the second place. Now pack it in.

Sure, his daughter had a birthday, and it was a bad deal for his teammate. But give me a break. They could have waited till 1k or less to go for it. They attacked Sepp to take his Jersey nothing but. And for Jonas to look back and see he and Prizmo where dropping Sepp because he called them on the radio to say ha guys ease up for Jonas to look back and pretty much say screw you pissed me off. Agreed. Primoz is way too full of himself. His comments after his win the other day were disgusting after what Sep has done for him. It is a job, but be a human and have some humility.
That is bu11sh!t. Primož has been preparing for the Vuelta since May, i.e. since the Giro was finished, where he won. Kuss and Vingeggard did not prepare specifically for the Vuelta. Primož was the best prepared, certainly much better than the two. And if it were normal, if Remco hadn't kneeled down so infamously and if he would have continued to be a real competitor for the win, then Jonas and Primož would have shown their real cards and their strength. But then again, Primož was extremely strong, and could easily win. Seppi is extremely likable and we all wish him victories, but in the real world he would never win a Grand Tour with Rogla, Vingo, Remco or Pogi alongside him. If someone doesn't understand this, then the only thing that is clear is that they either know nothing about cycling or are turning a blind eye to bias.
Maybe 2024 will be The Year of the Sepp... with wins @ the Tour de France and the Giro. He's definitely proven he has the legs for it... time and time again.
thecyclingdane: Superdomestique to Grandtour Winner? reality: this is going to be the beginning of the downfall of Jumbo Visma, as internal conflict battles start . . . silently
@@gringo19860 Well it is up to the opposition to get better, not for TJV to get weaker I believe. On paper UAE should be just as strong yet here we are..
As a Dane I wanted Jonas to win, but I am happy that they challenged Sepp Kuss for the victory up until Angliru. Even though I don’t think Jonas gave it all on Angliru. I still think Jonas is the strongest rider, but I’m not one of those guys who are angry that Sepp Kuss will win. He is a great guy. But having a Danish guy taking two grand tours in one year that would have been crazy.
@@dannyjensen2123Chris Horner has no idea how TJV works. His analysis of the Angliru stage makes that very clear. As does most everything he says about TJV for that matter. Consolidating the podium sweep was the logical thing for them to do on that stage. So logical that it was precisely what Remco said he expected them to do beforehand. Yet Horner didn’t say a word about this, expecting them to risk both the podium and red (if Sepp had really cracked).
Good video, I honestly don't think the attack on Angliru was an attack on the leaders jersey, since the team wouldn't want that and Jonas commented afterwards that he didn't want to stab his teammate in the back. Altough it did look weird but I think it had more to do with Landa than Kuss since they came in together.
It was about consolidating the podium. They almost tripled the distance to Ayuso in 4th (went from 1:00 to 2:52). Helped by Soler and Almeida who really screwed over Ayuso, even more so than the rest of this tour. In the moment it was hard to tell if Sepp was going to crack for real. If not, he could probably have come back without Landa. If yes, Jonas and Primož both staying with him could’ve cost the team the victory in Madrid. Did Landa save him from fully cracking? Personally I don’t think so but the footage isn’t clear enough to be sure.
The people complaining of "gifts" ignore the fact that Sepp gifted the Tourmalet to Jonas. Sepp was strongest that day. The gradient, distance, and altitude all favored him. He let Jonas celebrate his daughters birthday instead of taking it for himself. This changed the dynamics of the rest of the race.
Thank you! I have seen several times over the years that Sepp held back to let his teammate get the glory. I think naysayers just only appreciate big egos with "killer instincts"
Now after doing this video, you should highlight the pletora of other domestiques throughout the years, all who were way more accomplished than Kuss and prevailed through even worse competition, compared to Kuss' competition being his own teamates. Speak and advocate for the Grand Tour they should've been gifted. The idea of Kuss riding well for his leaders so they owe him ? nothing more selfish, that's his duty. theirs is to win. If he wants to rival them, leave just as all the former domestique turn leaders did. Keep in mind, most who did this still failed to win. Kuss is FAR behind and has alot more to accomplish before he should be "owed" anything more than a salary/stage win by any team.
Here's the facts. He got more time in the breakaway than they could claw back. He defended his jersey with the best ITT of his career. He then defended his jersey on Tourmelet being the strongest rider on the mountain. The only reason Jonas even got time was because team strategy allowed him to go up the road. Kuss's role was to wait for UAE to chase and then suck the wheel, that never happened, so he launched. He then defended his jersey on Angliru, chasing to protect time on what ended up being the 2nd fastest Vuelta summit. He had 1km of the entire Vuelta where he didn't look the strongest rider. That's it. He was in the lead after the hardest mountain in pro cycling. And the only person who can drop him in Linares is Remco, so the race for GC is over. The champion is the one that has the fastest time at the end. Kuss did everything necessary so far for that to be him. And he did it with 2 fewer domestiques than any other team's GC contenders.
Watching Sepp DRAGGING Roglic up mountains in the Giro was an eye opener to his potential.. Kuss is deserving of the Volta title! He attacked when his teammates couldn’t because of Remco.. taking a huge time gap! So having his teammates attack him after he broke Remco was not a good look for Jonas And Roglic! Well done Sepp 👏👏👏!
But I see the teams point. They have 3 guys who can win easily. Do Jonas and Primoz take three weeks easy and let Sepp win, simply because Sepp was the first of the three to get a gap?
"...after he broke Remco..." ?????????? Remco literally dropped on the first proper climb of the day, less than an hour after the start of the stage, at a time where there were like 60 people in the lead peloton, HOURS before Kuss did anything on that stage. I legit cannot even comprehend the sort of mental gymnastics it would take to reach the conclusion that Sepp somehow broke Remco. Like I'm not even kidding, out of all the out-there theories I've heard americans invent to somehow claim that this isn't a complete gift, yours is literally the most insane of them all. I'm genuinly shocked, actually. Kuss broke Remco... Maaaaaaaan.
@@dannyjensen2123 Maybe he used a Voodoo doll or something? Or maybe he snuck behind enemy lines and spiked his gel before the race? Kuss breaking Remco, man, I still haven't recovered from that thermo-nuclear hot take. Incredible.
let's not get ahead of ourselves. Without the 3 minute head start gained in the 40 man breakaway, there's 0 chance he wins the Vuelta. He might finish on the podium but more likely he will just relax on the TT and end up somewhere in the top10.
Sepp Kuss is a great climber and amazing domestique. That’s pretty much it though. Normally he wouldn’t be good enough to win a grand tour because he’s not a great time trialist. He got lucky in the Vuelta by gaining time in a breakaway because if a miscalculation by his rivals and he ended up hanging on because his teammates decided not to pass him at the end. Also Jonas could have gained more time on him if he wanted be he didn’t. On Angliru for example Jonas didn’t take a turn with Roglic. They would have gained much more time.
Doesn't really seem THAT incredible to be honest. He's an excellent climber, who chose the way of a career domestique out of preference (while being extremely well paid for it), and now finds himself about to be gifted a Vuelta trophy by his buddies. I like the guy, but that's about it. Not exactly a Roglic Ski Jumper fairy tale as far as that goes, is it? I fear the biggest legacy of his career will be proving that Twitter outrage mobs can decide GT winners at will, as long as they shout loudly enough.
Nothing but facts spoken. People need to respect heirarchies of power. If Vin/Roglic was incapable, it would've been completely understandable. But they're forced to pass this opportunity. Imagine telling your 2x TDF Champion, 3x Vuelta 1x Giro Champion,"Hey, sit up, protect/wait for Kuss, he deserves this more than you guys do". Roglic who would've tied an all time record, Vin would've 1 upped Tadej with GC wins, both statements being so much more grand than saying "I rode for my leaders so they gave me a vuelta". Shameful on behalf of their sponsors and an insult to the testament of their leaders who sacrified and displayed alot more than Kuss can ever dream to at his age.
@@joshtylordasilva1183 Vingegaard, at least in public, seems to be OK with Kuss getting it, but then again he's also 26 and will probably get other chances (though you never know, just ask Bernal...). Roglic... He seems pissed, and I don't blame him. He's 33, and being asked to act as a domestique when he has a shot to tie Heras' Vuelta wins. And not only that, his management bait-and-switched him by saying they could ride to see who was strongest, only to instantly change their minds and backtrack because Twitter got mad at them. If I'm Roglic, I'm telling my agent to go have a chat with Ineos, Bahrain and Lidl-Trek... What annoys me the most is that the people shrieking don't even seem to have appreciation for just how much Jonas and Primoz are being asked to give up. And instead of giving them any credit for doing so when the team told them, all they get is hatred and ingratitude from the Chris Horner viewing mob.
@@jmsytbe Exactly! I think Vin as well as Roglic's response is to preserve their image since it's obvious they're being hated and bashed for what should've been a normal approach to the situation. But, there are rumors of roglic leaving, hopefully it is true, it'd add more dynamic to GC fights and make these sort of situations less probable.
@@joshtylordasilva1183 I hope he does leave. I don't like TJV stacking this much talent anyways. Makes the sport more boring. And this whole mess only started because TJV were so dominant that they ended up in a position to pick and chose who gets to win.

It only looks that way to non-cyclists. Fans know it is a team sport. Jumbo wins. If Sepp had not gifted the Tourmalet to Jonas he would have a bigger gap and the dynamics of the rest of the stages would be different.
It’s gonna suck for him when he looks back at that win and realizes he was given a win because weak soft people cried enough for him to be given a win. I wouldn’t take pride in it if I was him

Of course not. You know why? Because it's a team sport!!!!!!!!!!!
@@KirbyOttenbreit It's a hybrid sport, not comparable to solo sports like tennis, but also not comparable with true team sports like football. It's a team sport with individual winners, where management sets the team up the maxmize the potential of the strongest individual riders, ie. the captains. To that end, team members are hired specifically for their ability to assist their stronger and more talented captains, and maximize their chances of personal victory. These are called "domestiques". Strong teams are very important - but if you go through the winners of the Tour de France, you'll have a much, MUCH easier time finding riders who won the GC because they were the strongest, but didn't have the strongest team (example: Pogacars first TdF win - his team was borderline irrelevant), than you will finding examples of GC winners who were clearly weaker, but did have stronger teams to compensate (example: uhhhhh, Oscar Pereiro Sio? Most examples here are gonna be pretty flukey). So that's the factually correct answer. A hybrid team sport with individual winners, where the strength of the individual has vastly greater potential to influence the result on his own compared to even the biggest stars from a pure and true team sport like football.

Obviously the "nice guy" has done some gifting of his own in the past and has definitely worked hard enough to win the Vuelta this year. G. Thomas and most of the Vuelta peloton apparently agrees with you too and they know more than me. Always enjoy your videos and commentary.
Very enjoyable. Thanks for putting this together for us.
Congrats Sepp!!!
Nice summary! Fingers crossed today goes well for him.
It was now or never…
Awesome vuelta Sepp..!!
Primo and Jonas are cowards but their cowardice act was not enough as Mike Landa helped Sepp to pull him out
Of note Sepp's father is Dolph Kuss who is a legend in the Durango area.
Loved the knod (and the not-so-veiled dis to another:) to Chris Horner. Would be cool to mention Greg too. Thanks for posting.
Great recap! Sepp is awesome! ❤
Excellent video! Go Sepp!!!
Well done, thank you!!!
Lovely video, thanks for making this - FYI Gila in Tour of the Gila is pronounced "heel-uh." It's perhaps our biggest stage race these days :(
Well done, Dane!!!!!!
Thank you glad you enjoyed it

@@dilligaf2818 well, at least they finally changed their mindset, Sepp really deserves this final grand tour!
I think either Jonas or Primoz could have won La Vuelta ahead of Sepp. But this was a superb way to say thanks for Sepp’s huge and vital help in other Grand Tours! Respect!
He won
He is not only great rider , he is a humble person and loyal to his teammates. JV winning TDF without Sepp would not happen and so do primo win too . I can’t say the same for primo and Jonas .
Sepp Kuss is an amazing cyclist. I always believe in his abilities as a GC rider. He should stop being a domestique and go for his own achievements and aspirations so we could see his full potential while he is still prime.
That's awesome. Keep believing in his GC abilities, and who knows, maybe one day he'll even win one!
Great (music is just a bit to loud)
My bad I will it change it for the next one
If he takes haircut advice from Wout, there’s really no limit to how high the Eagle from Durango can fly.
I just wish people would stop saying
1) that he’s only in the lead cos he got lucky in a breakaway. Not true. TJV put half their team in that breakaway precisely to bump up Sepp’s GC position, and for him to win the stage;
2) that he was betrayed/stabbed in the back on the Angliru, cos that’s not what happened.

Seeing all that Sepp has done for Primoz, and seeing promiz's attitude makes me hope Sepp never rides again for him
Sepp kuss 🎉
Glad his team didn't screw him over
In my opinion he needs to find a team that will highlight him, work for HIM and make him the champion he TRULY is.

Way to go Sepp Kuss ❤🇺🇸🇺🇸
As a Dane I wanted Jonas to win, but I am happy that they challenged Sepp Kuss for the victory up until Angliru. Even though I don’t think Jonas gave it all on Angliru. I still think Jonas is the strongest rider, but I’m not one of those guys who are angry that Sepp Kuss will win. He is a great guy. But having a Danish guy taking two grand tours in one year that would have been crazy.
And now it may never happen. Happy now?
Horner hates Jonas. I don’t know why. My guess is that Horner is just a bad person who does not rate talent and integrity at all.
Sepp Kuss the man from Durrango
But born in the flat lands of Indiana ?!?!?
God for him winge was his wingeman since , winge could have won but thaths not hes natur, he wanted this for seep
If he wins, [allowed to win] that will make both American Vuelta victories as being amongst the most controversial! Sepp and Horner!

Broh legit are you coming from the past
I wanna see Sepp on team UAE as soon as his contract is up.
Interesting old footage.
But one team dominating a tour like this is boring.

I hope that he finds a team that will appreciate all his work and sacrifice . Roglic really showed what sort of snake he is on the Angliru .youre better off out of there Sepp .
I think the broo-ha-ha at the Vuelta was a good lesson and ego check for Jonas and Primos, though a bit harder for Primos to accept. It’s as if they have lost appreciation for the massive efforts and selflessness of their team to deliver their GC riders to Victory. Sepp may never be in this position again but hopefully it is a reminder to the team stars that this is a team sport after all and that they can sincerely be happy for Sepp assuming that he goes on to win the Vuelta.
We'll see what happens when those 2 ride together without Sepp? One of those ego's is gonna be smacked hard!!
That Kuss was betrayed is such nonsense. You have two GC riders next to him that are stronger than him and are champions at heart. Both need to restrain themselfs in order to let another rider win. Of course this is difficult for them to do so...
Look at every frame, you also see his skinniness and eating disorder, prevalent in most pro cyclists, progress…….sad
