- Nine lines, 300 kilometers of the route network, and more than half a million passengers per day. With its high performance, the S-Bahn Rhein-Main forms the heart of local rail passenger transport in the metropolitan region of Frankfurt Rhein-Main. All S-Bahn trains travel more than 43,000 kilometers a day: 3,000 kilometers more than one orbiting the world. Frankfurt is at the core of the network. From there, the S-Bahn reaches the entire Rhine-Main area with its many central towns and cities such as Wiesbaden, Friedberg, Offenbach, Hanau, Darmstadt, and Mainz.
The rapid transit system has been in operation since 1978. Since then, the fast transit system has been continuously expanded and modernized as a climate and environmentally-friendly means of transport. In 2003 the S1 was extended to Rödermark Oberroden and the S2 to Dietzenbach. 2017 saw the groundbreaking ceremony for the four-track expansion of the S6 between Frankfurt and Bad Vilbel. The new Gateway Gardens S-Bahn station at Frankfurt Airport opened at the end of 2019. And the growth of the S-Bahn network continues: the S6 between Frankfurt and Bad Vilbel is currently getting its own new tracks. An additional North Main S-Bahn line from Hanau to Frankfurt is being planned. Likewise, the extension of line S5 from Friedrichsdorf to Usingen. The S-Bahn Rhein-Main will thus also become the backbone of the upcoming traffic turnaround.
The Rhein-Main-Verkehrsverbund (RMV) is responsible for the Rhein-Main S-Bahn. The RMV orders and commissions the S-Bahn service from Deutsche Bahn.
Due to the high importance of S-Bahn traffic in large metropolises, the S-Bahn Rhein-Main reports directly to the DB Regio board. Christian Roth has been head of the S-Bahn Rhein-Main since January 2017. In total, the S-Bahn Rhein-Main employs almost 1,000 people. These include more than 580 train drivers who work for the S-Bahn 365 days a year. Since August 2018, the S-Bahn trains have been running continuously at weekends, including at night.

@@myitinerary Thank you for your reply. Any idea about how much of a rush would it be around 9 pm for a person carrying 3-4 bags of luggage (~65kg)?
Normally there is no rush after 8 pm. But, due to 9 euro tickets people travel a lot nowadays. So it's difficult to say if it would be busy or not 🙂
