He is taken for a messenger and a piece of plaster of Paris jewelry is applied on his hand to get them over the border. Eventually the main character helps a militia stop the crime.

oh, it's Baku! I was actually wondering. The setting makes no sense, that city looks Turkish but lots of signs are written in Italian and some writings are in Arabic. On top of that, Baku is on the Caspian Sea, which means that if they arrived there by boat, they would have had to to set sail from some Caspian port. Highly unlikely
"The only people who drink champagne in the morning are aristocrats and idiots" - The person who drank from the bottle afterwards
Well that's the joke
TheBloblom
Which is hilarious and describes their character so well.
It is more of a joke, this movie takes place in communist Soviet Union and being an aristocrat there is not really acceptable. There are tons of nice little jokes like that. Amazing how much self irony was possible in this "evil empire" in spite of the totalitarian dictatorship. But probably that is the case in many dictatorships, as long as some invisible red lines are not crossed. The movie is great.
We already know this is a joke, this is what we said.
Off course. But what is interesting that a lot of jokes get more depth when being set into their context or viewed with knowledge about Soviet life.
This is the funniest movie I have ever seen!
I agree Dane. Im an American, too. I had no idea Soviet era films were this great!

фраза "Смотри не перепутай, Кутузов" в англоязычной интерпретации ("If you can remember all that, Lord Nelson") просто убила меня наповал.

Thank you, sir. I believe, it is a very wise approach.

Dr Strangelove, or how I learned to stop worrying and love the bomb.
You can't go wrong with Hitchcock! Some of my favorites are:
Rope (1948)
Strangers on a Train (1951)
The Trouble with Harry 1954)
Vertigo (1958, not really a comedy, but an epic thriller)
Maybe 1998 is not classic enough yet, but the Coen brothers' "The Big Lebowski" is a must see if one hasn't yet.
Anything by the Marx brothers.
Not really a "western" film, but Haepi-endeu (1999) with Do-Yeon Chun and Min-sik Choi is slyly comic and caused quite a controversy in Korea.
If you haven't seen the original Pink Panther series with Peter Sellers, you've missed out. You'll also lose respect for the remakes.
