A Home in the Bush Designed as a Fireproof Sanctuary (House Tour)

- Pearl Beach House by Polly Harbison Design is a concrete sculpture-formed home in the bush. Just one and a half hours north of Sydney, Pearl Beach is a small hamlet within dense coastal bushland. As a home in the bush, it was important that Pearl Beach House remained connected to its landscape while adhering to the fireproof requirements of the ‘Flame Zone’ BAL (Bushfire Attack Level) rating. Set within a clearing, the building emerges from the forest and welcomes the views of lush foliage through its carefully placed windows. Extra care and attention were taken in creating micro-climates within the site, whether that be through the building’s use of space, materials, heating, or balance between exposure and enclosure.
The fireproof concrete masonry walls protect the home in the bush from bushfire. In the context of these robust walls, the natural light that permeates the spaces elevates the simple materials and balances their strength and substance. Despite its protective qualities, the home in the bush facilitates immersive outdoor living, with an outdoor shower that allows the clients to bathe in the moonlight, a significant outdoor living space and all circulation being external. The natural environment is also welcomed inward with the warmth and colour of the surrounding bush inspiring the home’s colour palette.
Minimalist in form and function, as well as a fireproof home, the project is a home in the bush that instils a sense of calm. Here, the clients can enjoy the simple things, slowing down to observe how the light moves through space or simply absorbing the sights and sounds of the landscape at their doorstep of their home in the bush.

This goes beyond what we can call a home. It almost feels transcendent. I can imagine that shower under the moonlight. Such a bespoke piece Polly, and to the Local Project team, hats off on how you always manage to make us feel like we're there 🖤
Perfectly written observation. So agree, as it is excuisite.
What a beautiful choice of words. Almost a poetry. Like the design shown. Enjoyed both!
would somebody be able to put up such an awesome structure in KE tho ?
May We ALL Be Blessed with our Own Beautiful Sacred Living Spaces ❤🙏🏼
I’ve been watching 2-3 local projects homes videos for the last month and this is one of my favorites!
Watching this cleared my sinuses. The amount of healthy oxygen you can experience in a home built on a property surrounded by trees and foliage. Earth, trees, and sky. This home is a healing salve for those wanting peace of mind.
This home is so beautiful - so considered and the materiality is perfect. Polly is so well spoken and down to earth - well done!
Polly Harbison is so incredibly intuned with the surrounding nature - it is mesmerising!
How ? I went to UTS I Understand the trendy terms they use
Yes its amazing quality construction and amazing detailing
Tho don't you think it is more in tune or context to be in newtown or in Sydney a 2 storey residence and so compact condensed.
With the wide open spaces we have in Australia why not a spread out design . I didn't see the benefits of 2 stories without views .
Unless it was a cost factor and rock and slope
And I had to watch it again
The garage could have been designing different and hidden.
People are paying big bucks for houses in Australia we a not yet up to America design standards and construction standards .
Neutra used space probably the best and we are influenced by urban design and urban town planning restrictions
Australia is a little backwards tho there are many progressives designers and amazing leadership in some ways
My criticism comes because of property prices and this on a global cost just dosen't deliver or stack up and without a pool and rooftop balcony .
I think few years from now people will ask or demand more for there money
@@Simon-Simon-Simon it’s almost like people want different things out of their houses. For example, I would actively avoid buying a house with a pool because they’re work and I just don’t like swimming, and one of my favourite things to do is watch birds. I would much rather have these intimate views of the bush than sweeping vistas over the ocean. Different people want different things, and architects design for the brief they’re given :)
all of these architects and designers are so inspiring. i've genuinely completely changed the way i view architecture and what kind of home i want for myself in the future.
Dude my architec only design square houses lol
@@jesus2621 yeah, a lot of the new houses all look the same in my area as well. it's a shame
Real architects are really artists at heart. They have to combine that with functionality
The cinematography, her soft spoken voice, and the project was so calming. I could picture the family and years of joy that this home will bring.
Loved listening to Polly talk through the design brief and her creation loved her passion. Hope her clients love it.
“Passing of time” sums up the whole concept of this beautiful house!
This is what we call home. Nature and Peace
UA-cam has shown me that Australia is really leading the way in uniquely designed homes.
By far, a combination of talented designers/architects and highly skilled builders.

Not really . Lots of rubbish buildings this is only the top .000001%
America also has better design and use of space and Europe has is way of using tight spaces and japan .
Our town planning codes don't allow this only in the bush
Lets be realistic and have these designers discuss town planning codes. Especially Victoria and inconsistency
I feel like new Zealand leads the pack, Archipro a UA-cam channel has some really amazing designs.
unfortnately @Simon is right, whilst Australia certainly has immensely talented architects, designers, engineers and builders, our suburbs are awash with very ugly contemporary houses, especially in the new estates popping up on the city fringes. It is because of several large estate developers/builders dominating the market with badly designed and often cheaply and poorly built houses, that are going to date rapidly and leave a lot of very ugly suburbs.
This is absolutely stunning. From the moment Polly described the setting, I had goosebumps... beautiful
That’s NOT a home. It’s a splendid retreat! Absolutely relaxing and soothing! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Exemplary.
It is everything architecture can and should do. It elevates the possibilities of living. So much of exceptional design is unseen - how do we communicate the value of that to those that don’t value it because they can’t see it? There is so much being layered into this design it’s hard to even get your head around it. I’m an arch grad and this is an example of how considers I want my design process to one day be.
Exquisitely executed.
Accessibly and comprehensively communicated.
Beautifully directed and shot.
Thank you 🙏
Pure poetry. I love hearing people talking about buildings like this.
I love the level of consideration that has gone into this project but what I love most is the complete absence of any sort of preciousness in the materials and surrounding landscape.
We visit Pearl Beach every year for holidays, and it's been so fascinating to watch this slowly get built over the last few years. So nice to see finally see inside it! Beautiful video as always.
What an amazing home to retreat to and forget about life for a little while
This house is absolutely beautiful! ...and just when I thought it couldn't get any better, (boom) comes night, and the lights turn on! Absolutely amazing!
Polly Harbinson is a very talented architect. This is great, but her Pearl Beach House is a stunner.
Wow this is the most pleasure I’ve ever had from hearing an architect speak. Wow incredible 🙏❤️❤️❤️
This Home Is Absoulutely STUNNING! I Wish your Clients many Beautiful Lovely Days and Nights In This Living Space ❤
Listening to your voice talk about the house in the different features...features and the air...
It just really made me smile. Thank you so much.
Just want to say that she is spot on about the outdoor shower!
Incredibly beautiful design. She has great skills as an architect and is extremely sensitive and sensible in the handling of architectural details and the environment. A masterpiece..
I love that you can see much more of the House Tour this time! Well done!
That's a very beautiful home. It reminds me of the Glenstone Museum outside of Washington D.C.
This channel is so UNDERRATED!!!!!
So beautifully done. It's almost beyond words to describe how this special place would be experienced. Just lovely.
such an amazing choice of cold and warm materials
This is wonderful. I'd pop a veggie garden on the roof and then done :)
Somehow the house looks sad and somber and that's on a sunny day. .Good place to write a crime novel.
These shots really absorbed my attention. Amazing work on this video and the house, of course!
The thumbnail is always a great picture
Fabulous outcome! , thanks for the tour Poly. Thanks local Project for presenting so many amazing homes.
love the attention to how the shadows were going to play off the house when designing it
Beautiful design!!! Love how the light plays with it!!! 👏😍
our hostess is kind and subtle in vibration, as is the home. The art of dignified, idiosyncratic living and expression. Continued ease and wonder to its dwellers. Lovely.
Thank you Polly for a wonderful description of a beautiful house
The design of the house is not my cup of tea, but the location is amazing! All the sounds from birds and forest around. 😃
Best house in the bush. Love it!
Thanks Local Project 😎
I've oddly enough walked past this while doing a mild bush walk, it definitely stands out and from the outside it looks really nice especially in contrast to the area its in
Gorgeous. And beautifully presented.
Wow Polly. Wow.
Very nice home. I really know what she means about the contrast between the interior and the lush details and lighting that you get outside the window. It's really cool and somehow brings of memories of when I was young, but I'm not quite sure why. Great video. Thanks.
Well presented and nice project. Well done 👍🏾
beautiful. close to nature and airy
One of the best houses I have seen. It's too perfect for me.
I grew up in Oklahoma, US, where white cinderblock has a 'cheap' association, even when used with some sense of style. But I've always seen it as a material perfect for modern design and am delighted when its used so effectively and with such elegance.
Absolutely Gorgeous!!! Such a dream home! ❤😍
It really is!
I live in the Pacific North West, this design would be perfect for our fire areas. Nicely done!
I love the fact that it is bushfire safe and works with the environment, however it reminds me of a wartime bunker or a desolate brutalist ruin. And then the idea that a snake could slide into your living room...no thanks! I'd like to see this design with a little more lift brought to it through brighter furnishings or walls, to make it feel more cosy.
AMAZING PROJECT! Thanks for sharing!
Such a elegant channel. I love it
Absolutely beautiful !!
Beautiful carpentry & texture play
Beautiful fireproof house.
Great architecture! Q.: locating a house within the bush and leaving it open like that, isn't it problematic with insects? I just always wonder how to deal with this - in my eyes - problem.
동화 속 같아요....
자연을 자연스럽게 끌어드려 만족스러워요....
빛과의 조화는 역시입니다...
기분 좋은 만남이예요...
가구의 위치도 섬세하구요...
감사합니다...
SEEING THE AERIAL VIEW had be at WTTTTTF. wow
Magnificent design. As always, a lot of careful work and detail to create such simplicity.
beautiful!
Whoa 😮 beautiful 🤩. UK 🏴
It’s rare that a home can elevate the beauty of the Austrian environment. Polly Harbison have achieved this. Well done TLP for telling this story. Pearl Beach will always hold a special place in my heart ❤️
Was it the skiing or the castles?😄
Delightful editing
(And beautiful home of course)
Wow. Really nice.
Very beautiful house
This is a magical home ❤️🐝🏡
She got the vision 👌🏽
Nicely detailed construction!
Incredible!
This is beautiful
nice house! well thought out thank you!
This would be a perfect house for me
Awesome, just love it!
This is the real Australian dream! Simply stunning
Me gusta mucho este canal. La realización de los videos. La arquitectura que muestra. Esta casa me parece honesta y sin pretensiones, para mí le falta un toque de alegria para desear habitarla. Está claro que las sensaciones son personales y subjetivas.
Amazing 🙏
Awesome Work!
Amazing .
Why does this location make me shiver about the bushfire hazards living there? Lovely house though.
Beautiful lady in a beautiful house
So soothing
BRILLIANT!!!!
fantastic, I love it!
Очень красиво, огромное спасибо
wow beautiful
It's beautiful Home 🏠 ❤
Brilliant
Increíble!!!
wow this house is so dreamy...love the outdoor shower in the middle of the bush, such a unique place of calmness and serenity
A whole new series could focus on the construction process of masterpieces, as this home is. Would be fascinating to see the scope of the contractors world as the home evolves from dirt to finish.
Beautifully modern, I bet they get a lot of visits from critters.
your outdoor area looks spectacular! Want to do something similar, but using inflatable daybeds from the fillup club.
Impressive.
I love this ❤
amazing
A decent house🌷
Gorgeous it's almost alien.
