  • In this "motivational" talk, i talk about ways to look at and approach your process of learning, practicing to get good results, why i got into graffiti and how i made the transition to a more satisfying way of making art that is authentically me. The frustrations of learning, and of trying to make art when inspired; lack of satisfaction and the psychological reasons.

    Graff played a positive role in my life as it was an avenue for me to learn valuable lessons. Many. About art, risks, courage, responsibility, freedom, misery, and much much more.

  • @MilesWickham

    Yes, all that is totally true and real. In an ideal world, things would be different. Graffiti is not the issue. The issue with graffiti lies in each persons choice to use it in a destructive or irresponsible way. Now, if i had the perspective i have now when i started graff, i might still tag, but i would be way more selective of where and how i did it, and the intention behind it. Whereas with my old mentality, i was using graff to fill my addictive needs. So its whats inside that counts

    i know why abstract is currently my expression of choice. i know why it is totally valid and great. i can articulate it for you in a few sentences, maybe even a few paragraphs or an essay. actually, maybe its too deep and intricate to leave it up to words to explain, because true understanding takes experience to know ( wisdom). Abstract is such a thing, which no words or ideas are needed. The viewer is left observing feelings within themselves that are unknowingly sparked by the abstraction.

    Miles - great work! Thanks for sharing some of your techniques. With regards to using spray paints from the can, what is the smallest size image / art piece can work with? I have some art paper thats 18 x 24 inches which is considerably mucj smaller than the graffiti works that you do.

    So in what ways is an artist, in your opinion, restricted to "tell something"? And, why are you restricting me to ""tell" something through my art...as if there were no other way to share myself? And, what do you think it is i have to tell which i should tell with art? Please, if you have a higher vision for me, please guide me. I strive for the ultimate truth. Dont just spew your frustration out. Communicate some valuable information to me. Tell me what im hiding. Lets get down to it.

  • @MilesWickham
    @MilesWickham  11 років тому

    Since you seem to be so invested in the valuable things i have to say, i will share something valuable with you. If ur true intention is to guide someone to changing directions in a positive way, as it seems youre attempting with me, do not ever again "Should" on the person. Because all that'll do is piss'em off, make them want to go into their shell, or make them want to crush you. Is that where you want their focus? Also, secondly, take an honest look at your intentions when you r so emotional

    how to expand my ideas and just go with my own creativity and just staying true to myself

  • @MilesWickham
    @MilesWickham  11 років тому

    When people project they can sound absolutely insane. You do not know me, at all, but are lecturing me as if you were my therapist of many years knowing every detail of me. Can you muster up an ounce of honesty in yourself to look and see that you are projecting your own painful experiences blindly onto someone you know nothing about? And so, since you are projecting, i see that the last question you pose, a part inside you is desperately asking of YOURSELF the last part of your comment.

    So, let him paint sacred geometry and be happy with that, as i continue to paint what i enjoy and connect to. You have NO clue as to how much awareness i have of myself and how much i strive to keep distractions out and focus on the most pure meaningful things. Do whatever you do. We are not like minded people, so move on and continue your search.

    First off, i absolutely disagree with you, from first hand experience. Im not in the "art scene", and im not influenced by it. Abstract is my way to express. There is no way you can negate my truth with your limited opinion. You do not know me or my experience. Now , i want to know, what is it that you think there is to "learn"? What "significance" do you speak of which is "lacking" in abstract painting ( your own personal generalization, by the way) . Are you a painter? Have u seen my art?

  • @MilesWickham
    @MilesWickham  11 років тому

    you have not answered my questions, so your comments are vague. who is "they" and how did they smash my soul?.... what is it that you think there is to "learn"? What "significance" do you speak of which is "lacking" in abstract painting ( your own personal generalization, by the way) . Are you a painter? Have u seen my art?

    yo miles totally respect your opinions but I do think that graffiti can play a positive roll in someones life. I feel like alot of the negative outcomes stem at least in part from the systemic forms of oppression implicit within our legal codes and judicial system. without being said, graffiti if not done smartly and with thought can totally lead down a path of destruction.

    Haha. sounds like yo ufound your problem right there.
    Stop expecting to be a master already. You need, AS WE ALL DO, tons and tons of practice! Dude, ive been doing graffiti 13 years. And im still learning! I have enough skill now to do lots of satisfactory work. The best thing u can do for yourself is to find ways to HAVE FUN with the process, and practice every day. And DEFINITELY practice your own stuff. Youre probably too far along to be copying peoples styles.

  • @MilesWickham
    @MilesWickham  11 років тому

    you answered none of my questions which are relevant for me to learn your perspective.
    i cannot escape? i never said i was trapped. i also never said i saw into my future and that abstract was all there is. who knows where i will be guided.
    so, do you have answers? or where you just blindly spewing rhetoric of which there is no deeper meaning you know of? My guess is you have a personally harsh opinion on something you dont understand, so you dont even understand why you have a harsh opinion.

    Another thing- Am i painting for you, or for myself? Do you realize how narcissistic it is to request that i change my own personal choice of self expression based on your opinion? You have an extreme grandiosity complex. In reality you are a moron, but fortunately there is hope for people like you. But youll have to go through some tough stuff to realize your mentality is causing you pain.
