That “But please don’t take years to finish it” is definitely a legit worry lol.
Being neurodivergent with strong lack of motivation issues, i've definitely done that...
I'm really ashamed of it really.
@@corruptedteka hey, relax. an open line of communication can at least save your bacon from time to time. people, furry or not, do value honesty, after all.
You can bet they do take years, and that's if you're lucky.
Usually they take the money and run. I've been burned by several artists over the years and never commission anyone anymore.
As someone who does lots of commission work (mostly 3d stuff), much of which is for furries, I am constantly and consistently surprised by how much they are willing to pay. I’ve had times where they just throw in DOUBLE the amount of money because they thought my work was deserving of it.
Just a few days ago I was discussing a 2 part project with a client and after I named my price for it, they said “okay, and how much for the second half?”
I was gonna do the WHOLE THING for that much, but they decided to pay that, plus more than double the original amount for the second half of the project.
And honestly, out of all of my clients, the furries have been by FAR the nicest and most understanding. Plus they’re pretty familiar with how commissions generally go down so they’re always easy to work with
Did you mention (edit: to thee commissioner) that you thought the initial price was for the full 2 part piece instead of only the first?
When 80% of your fandom lives and dies by visual media, you learn to respect the makers or risk the community collapsing.
My first commission was from a newer artist, and they made a full ref sheet for me for only *$40.* I was ready to shell out double that amount for a ref sheet, and honestly I felt they deserved it after I saw how much time and care went into their work, but I was scared they'd see it as an insult since the #1 rule of commissioning is to not fight an artist on their prices. I honestly regret not offering them higher for their work in hindsight
@@SephelionsOh yes, that's a good rule. Never argue with an artist about the prices of their work. It always ends badly and it's always worth the money
@@Sephelions I just 'tip' them up to at least top boost them to close to normal value. If most folk are charge $100+ for refs, and a new commissioner who is clearly very talented charges me $40, I'ma AT LEAST give them a 40 tip to boost them to 80. And then still feel bad and lightly suggest they boost their prices.
A few times I've actually said to artists like "wow your art is great, normally people charge twice this, you should consider charging more" and they've then upped their charge and still found success. It's a great feeling to encourage an artist and then see them have the confidence to raise prices :D
Furry: "Do you commission furry art?"
Artist: "Yes, I can"
Furry: "Great! Unrelated question, do you have any college debt?"
Artist: "Yea, actually. It's such a probl-"
Furry: "You don't anymore :)"
Once, due to problems with my main job, I didn't have enough money to pay the rent. Furry customer, which ordered commission, donated me 460 bucks after I finished their drawing. It was even more than missing amount.
I genuinely think that the history that the furry community has had with such extreme bullying and unkindness--and I don't believe it's a coincidence that the bullying has happened to a community is near-entirely made up of queer, mentally ill, and/or disabled people--has led to creating I think possibly the most empathetic and radically compassionate internet communities ever. I would argue most fandoms aren't really communities in a real sense of what that word means, but furries are on a whole other level.
man I'm a 3d artist with huge debt and this really makes me think... is 3d art popular in the furry community?
@@just1it1moko It defienetly is! Especially character model for things like VR Chat, but even 3D art in general is appreciated

I had this EXACT experience. Almost $40 for a piece, and he insisted on paying up front. I finished it the next day, and he was so patient with me while we were waiting on cashapp to verify my account!! Furries are always 10/10 the BEST commissioners
a friend of mine once, early on in their career of being an internet artist, had a furry pay in full upfront, finished the piece in a couple days, and got paid the full amount again when the client got the piece. they tried their best to refuse, saying how they already got paid and all, but the furry was so insistent on paying again

Shskkxsj gosh I’ve spent so much money on art of my fursona

I read somewhere that the collective GDP of the furry fandom is roughly that of a small country. Furries are hella rich and hella ethical about making sure artists get paid what they're worth. The art, crafting, and fursuit/cosplay side of that culture is full of good eggs.
They’re also often keeping the digital infrastructure of society afloat, like as their job
But their not very ethical about… you know… wanting to… be with… animals

Its Sad to Think that before i hated furrys, but then i took a better look and found out that they are Nice people in general
Funny anecdote about furries: in the beginning of the Internet, some companies were recruiting IT staff in furries conventions because they were usually the same people knowledgeable enough to maintain technical infrastructure for their online communities.
Lots of cool people, for sure. Very open-minded and respectful (and sometimes surprisingly rich).
im starting to think, maybe the it guys are furries since from what i know their freelance jobs pays well
Yes! Many of the furries in the early days were very tech savvy! They had to be as the best (and sometimes only way) to gather was primitive online message boards.
There's a huge overlap between furries and IT because there's a huge overlap of IT and introverts that use the internet all the time.
honestly, even as a part time artist, like im literally just self taught, doodling in my free time, no real experience artist... this is very true. people asking for fursona/furry oc art are always the most generous, patient, kind, and responsive when you have questions about certain details and they always have tons of refs to help out.
I can vouch for this, i literally have a Google drive with ALL my commissioned artwork of Kane (my sona) on hand in case people need references.
As for patience, i reassure people that there is no deadline and that they can work at their own pace, good art takes time and putting stress on a *real human being* is (for the lack of a better word) cruel.
and @tiredideabox : any tips on getting commissions? Everything I've done has just come up as silence or as people looking for free art or animations... :(
Shout out to the Reference Artists. They're the real MVPs of the furry art community. It's some of the hardest, most detail-oriented art you can work on because you're literally designing someone's internet identity, and it's the sheet that they'll hand to EVERY OTHER ARTIST they work with in the future. I got so lucky when I commissioned a woman new to the fandom to do my character reference and she under charged me for her work. Tipped her $50 and now I tell everyone that they need to go see her for art if they're interested in dragons.

This post made me change my POV on the furry community, I only thought they were freaks or... morally reprehensible people before, now I know there are some extremely wholesome individuals out there
They live in two worlds if you think about it. The furry world, where they get to express who they are and what they like. It included some people I called friends, even my own brother. I don't understand why people think they're bad, it was such a nice community. Even though I stopped calling myself a furry, I'm still in and following the community, looking at the art, suits, and fun stuff they're up to. And personally, I love taking commissions from them. I just hope people can leave them be, yknow? Like if you don't like furries, just look the other way, no reason to give them a hard time because they're different.
Man, that's gotta suck. I pretty much have become a furry since the start of the pandemic and I still have yet to really express that part of me, but I hope it doesn't go the same way as it did with you.
@Google Slides The world of anti-social media (it's generally NOT social media) is not the window through which to truly know Furries. The difference is that, in person, you will find you can be more of yourself than you would in other situations. You might still feel shy and socially awkward, but less so. You'll find, over time, that you express more of yourself, though some furmeets can be cliqueish and difficult. Just because we're Furries doesn't mean we've managed to shed all of the terrible habits the world told us to take up.
I met two households of Furries (one middle class, one not so middle class), but both of those houses, though crowded, also lived interactive lifestyles with one another that I (not yet a Furry then) found amazing. Now I live in a house with four other Furries; I borrowed the pattern I saw. The person who lives with us who is least Furry once said to me, "I really envy how you live." Part of hte reason Furries get shit is because actually our fursonas (can) change how we exist in the world, as more outgoing, agreeable, emotionally stable, conscientious than we once were (research proves this). It's not perfect, it's not a solution to everything, but it's definitely better and far more ideal than the world as it is.
See me personally when I get the furry hate I'm just like "ey come on man be a bit more mature" unless they're a child in which case I just start killing them over and over cause that's usually effective, ah bullying children never gets old

"Just don't take years to make it, please."
Wish I could be this blunt with artists sometimes. I just sit around and wait forever like "I'm sure they're working on it...I don't want to bother them."
This is the real struggle. A few months is fine, but when it gets past a year, its the most awkward thing ever to try and approach em. Like, I don't want to feel like I'm calling them a thief or such, but its gonna come off a bit like that no matter what with such a time gap. and it's even worse when they legitimately just forgot about it, and then it's done in like a day after ya remind em.
Deadass. Bother them.
As someone with amnesia, someone will come up to me and be like "so um I commissioned you a month ago..."
It might be worth a bit of bothering.
I’m still waiting after two (now almost three) years for people to do their halves of art trades 😭 I don’t wanna be pushy but I know for a fact they ARENT doing it, saying I’ve ‘given up trying’ is an understatement at this point
Please bother us artist- not a lot- but yes it does get akward if we forget cause then we finish in the next day after feeling horrible for doing so. Basicly, don't push artists around, but please, please, when commisioning, if it's been a while, it never hurts to check in or start up a little small talk even just to remind them. Especially if they get a lot of commisions, sometimes it gets lost, and sometimes it can even be a lack of motivation. Lots of reasons, but again, never be afraid to apporach. It's litterally the worst when someone reminds you months later of a commision they forgot and then us artists are just over here like, "oH My gOd, i'M SO sOrrY- CRAP-" We'll freaking sppedrun that commision to make up for a mistake in all honnesty.
I'VE HAD A HANDFUL OF CUSTOMERS LIKE THIS AND THEY LITERALLY MAKE MY WHOLE YEAR. It's crazy how sweet and generous furries are ;-;
Sometimes people forget that if someone can afford a fur suit, then if they ask for anything for money, weird or not, your gonna get a pretty nice payment
Some of us can’t even afford a fursuit. That’s why we do commissions in the first place! It makes us smile to know that our favorite artist was willing to make a drawing of our character that we hold so dearly.
My friend once described furries as "incredibly kind, but suspiciously wealthy" and it kinda stuck with me
So true! Those suits along can easily rack up into the thousands (assuming a high quality suit)!
It also has a lot to do with
“Furries will spend more than they should on furry shit.”
Trust me, we aren’t all rich, we just have terrible self control.
"I dont make fun of furries because If they can buy a 2000$ fur suit then they can buy a 10$ pipe bomb in my mail box"
And then there's us that are broke af. We either choose between cool art or necessities... guess what one wins more often.

A furry saved my life once, so I had a fairly positive view on them from the outset.
Some friends of mine said some odd things about them as a community later in life when I brought up the subject, so I decided to do my own research. From what I found, the furry community was, and remains, largely a kind, caring, educational, and open community. They are also exceedingly generous to charities and artists. They have a few outliers and bad eggs, but no more so than any other group. In fact, between their charitable donations to hospitals and commissioning starving artists, they can really only be seen as a net positive in my eyes.
@@MikeyFazboi I was fixing houses as part of a middle school charity program one summer in the mountains of West Virginia. One day on my way to the house we were fixing, I got ahead of my group and spotted a man on his porch under a giant confederate flag. It was at least 10 feet tall, covering the entire second floor on the face of the house. I was a young, sheltered black northerner so I didn’t know what that flag meant. My teacher at the time had told me to ask the next person I saw with a confederate flag what it meant to them today when I asked him after we covered the confederacy in History. The flag-covered porch was overflowing with sleepy dogs, which in my naive mind meant he was a good enough person to keep dogs happy, and therefore safe. The people in town had also been very kind to me so far. I decided to ask him what his flag meant to him.
He asked me to come over and talk to him about it, so I did. Then he leveled a shotgun at me that he’s been hiding behind the porch’s supporting column. He started ranting loudly about something. I could tell he was passionate, and offended, but I couldn’t hear him, all of my focus was down the barrel of that gun. He got louder, angrier, and stood up from his rocking chair, and took more careful aim at me. Maybe I didn’t answer a question he asked me? Still not sure.
That’s when my white, furry friend saved me. She ran up and stood between me and the gunman, apologized for both of us, and backed me off of the guy’s property. She stayed between me and him until we rounded the corner at the end of the street.
If she hadn’t been there right then, and been brave enough to risk her own life for my stupid mistake, I would be dead. Based on what I’m told he was yelling before my friend arrived, she 100% saved my life.

Not all furries are like what you hear about them guys, most of them are just people that chill, love art and have a great time with others. There is small groups of furries that ruin it for every single other fur. So give the normal people in the fandom a chance everybody
Yup, the small groups are always the groups that speak the loudest and give the rest of the community a bad wrap
Everyone wonders why furries are suspiciously wealthy, but I think I know why and the answer is right here really.
When you find someone who is new to furries and you treat them like this, they are likely to keep coming to furries for support, and when they find continuous support in the community they are more likely to give what they get as learning the culture of the fandom. Really being a furry isnt just being part of a community but being part of a semi-independent economic system of people who actually value each others work fairly and often, which drives furries to keep doing what they love while keeping people away who think its weird and wouldnt benefit from or benefit the drive of it all. Perhaps we can go deeper and say this was the plan of Disney and other companies to fund people with this mindset to make more money themself, but that could be a bit of a conspiracy and this is just a UA-cam comment, but I just freaking love furries and they always find a way to amaze me by basically running the internet!
dude that's awesome!! I honestly didn't know much about the community except the negative stuff you can find everywhere, but this plus a few other positive videos have shown me a whole other side! this was such a cute and uplifting story, posted on my birthday too!
Ash Coyote on YT did an amazing documentary explaining it in great detail and it's honestly the best (free) documentary I've seen!
Some of the biggest clients for freelance artists are furries
Thank god for them
Furries singlehandedly carry the art (and IT) industry afloat. God bless them.
I don't think ive had a single bad interaction with a furry when i was doing commissions! i dont care what people say they are lovely
Agreed. We can be weird but 1. Wich fandom isn't and 2. That's what makes futures great to my mind. Always kind and supportive ^^
I'm a furry artist and had mostly bad interactions with people begging for free art and trying to scam me. 😔 But every now and then there'll be one or two really awesome people who tip generously. One even asked to pick up a commission that someone else abandoned and payed the full amount. That was nice. ✨️
Oh, my god, this was so heartwarming and wholesome... This is exactly the kind of context that my troubled soul was longing for. Such a genuine and personal touch to it. ♡
As a furry and furry artist myself, all i can say it's totally true! Somehow most of the commissioners are wholesome beans, that is super nice to work with.
Reading these top comments, it's so nice seeing the furry community actually having so many people with a positive attitude to it. It's made my day seeing, even if there are a lot of others who think it's weird or whatever, that so many people are so chill about it still ❤️
When people actually meet Furries in person, rather than dealing only through the lens of online trolldom, Furries find out people don't hate them as much as they tend to imagine.
Any time I see a drawing of a giant Falco, it warms my heart to know it was commissioned by a certain someone who went out of their way to find a little-known artist in need and pay them generously.
Ah yes, Togepi1125 and their... kind of unhealthy but really fascinating focus on only Macro Falco art.
Furries dont feel artists for granted, our whole fandom is build upon art
@@pwrsocket have you counted every single piece of art in existence pertaining to anthropomorphic animals and sorted it all onto r34 and non r34 to be able to provide such a bold statement?
Furries are low-key some of the most accepting people ever.
Gender? Age? Race? Orientation?
They could *not* care less.
Most of them are so sweet, too! Not in the 'spam uwu' sense, but legit are some of the most selfless people I have met.
I don't know who the general pop has been interacting with, but furries are gold a dozen.
probably the ones furries didn't have time to set the scenario perfectly and had to see it natural. plus i seen furries discriminate on all those things its not even rare to see it. hating younger furries who having seen what they do to be compliant, hatred of straight people and you know what race.
@@zeosummers3984 Well there's a difference, teens going through a phase and letting loose since they don't actually understand the world- and people who think stylized animals and animal-like things are neat.
What you're describing sounds like a generic twitter user.
@@zeosummers3984 that happens but it doesn't define the whole. most furries are respectful and don't do those things you mentioned. (but I have seen what you mentioned happen so I don't disagree) I just disagree with the idea that all are like that
One of my artist friends loves when a furry comes along to commission because they usually have many references or are able to communicate well what they want (if it's like a new character ref sheet), tip well and show off their new art a lot with the artist attached.
Yep, and honestly I didn't even think that not everyone's like that when commissioning until reading this
Finally, positive rep! I've talked to enough kids to know just how crazy the rumours about being a furry is. No, not all furries wear fursuits. No, not all of us want to act like animals. No, being a furry doesn't mean we want to screw animals. I don't even interact with the fandom other than watching blackie sootfur and being in a friend's tiny server. It honestly feels like more of an artstyle than a community at times.
@@k-marketmuotiala4801 it's juste enjoying anthro characters like Po or Tigress, Nick Wilde and more :)
having a fursona isn't mandatory tho the majority of us have one!
@@sweetzeyraa Not a furry myself, but gonna have to disagree. You very much can like Po or Tigress without being a furry, in my opinion. Or do you mean like be hella into every anthro character just because they're anthro? Cuz many movies and other media often have characters that are human-like, but not literally human (Cars from the Cars Movies etc.), so I think pretty much everyone would be a furry or a carry or something similar by that definition.
I really appreciate the answer, tho.
@@k-marketmuotiala4801 it's a bit hard to describe but it's just an interest. It's no different than any other fandom in those terms. It's a community of people who share an interest in animals with human aspects and proportions. In fact, the whole community was founded from a small group of people who enjoyed drawing anthro animals in the late 40s (they were known as the Funny Animals Fandom before it was transformed into the Furry Fandom)
i think a good reason as to why furries really take good care of commisions is because being an artist is genuine hard work, and getting drawings of your characters is even harder. i myself have been living off of free samples and sketches for a good couple years, but i'll definitely get into the commission game one day.
*This... does put a smile on my face.*
I try my hardest to be an excellent client, especially when I'm working with an artist in a difficult financial situation.
Never take advantage of low starting prices; if you feel on instinct what you're paying doesn't appropriately value the quality of the work you've received, offer more. You will most certainly feel very personally fulfilled even if your wallet is a bit lighter.
Do not do too frequent check-ins! It obviously depends on estimates, but it's usually acceptable to check in about weekly, but make sure you checked with the artist beforehand whether they're starting immediately or if they're working on backlogged commissions and if yours will be started a bit later! Also, if you're going to check in, make sure the artist is healthy physically and mentally. You always need to be willing to give grace when it comes to the artist's well-being, both because it would be unethical to do otherwise, and because it can impact the quality of the final result!
If the work isn't what you hoped, do not be *harsh* with your criticism, be *precise*. It can hurt to pay well for something you don't like very much, and you may think it'll hurt to have their work criticized, but this probably isn't their first rodeo. Just make sure you're using constructive terminology and avoiding negative connotations!
It's okay to ask for corrections, but there is a balance! Consider how long things can take to re-draw. Try drafting the concept got the piece beforehand, or using references; either way, make sure you are firm about the concept, because asking for something at dramatic as a change in pose or setting after the scene is already being illustrated would be a bit rediculous! Even if it looks silly because you can't draw, it's okay! The artist will most likely always appreciate some direction with a rough draft, especially because it can be assurance that they won't have to make too many changes down the line!
(this is all I can really think of right now, but feel free to reply some other good suggestions! remember to be good clients owo)
honestly, thank you for this guide :)
It may seem like common sense, and even tho I think of myself as someone nice, it is still good to have a reminder of proper manner with stranger doing their best 😁
Thank you for this! Just commenting so that more people might see this :)
omg this is a nice guide! You seem like such a nice and wholesome person, caring for artist you'll be commissioning
I once payed $400 for an artwork I hated. It took so long and there were pretty much no communitcion or updates and it came out so ugly I can't stand looking at it. Still, I didn't complain. I just paid him his money and left.
why? because I'm not an asshole.
It’s so refreshing to see a furry-positive piece of media. It’s so easy to just call the fandom weird and disregard it entirely because it’s so seemingly different from everything else.
they might be very wacky but that does not have to be, and never had to be, a bad thing. Just let them have some peace.
Hot take: Cringe culture has done way more damage than cancel culture ever will
@@rainbowresorts for me they kinda blend in. The line of separation (if there is one) couldn't be blurrier
We’re a quirky lot, but I think that’s part of the appeal. When I dipped my toes in, I fell in love with the community SO quickly.
This is so wholesome. Supportive and sweet: its nice to see a video that sticks up for the fandom! The world needs more of this :)
i think theres something to be said about the capacity to anthropomorphize things (in this case, animals) leading to the development of a particularly strong sense of empathy. being that anthropomorphization is extending human characteristics onto non-human things.
and then it goes without saying that people with a lot of empathy generally are kind to others.
The furry fandom is usually seen as weird and gross, but on the inside is a bunch of kind hearted people who care about each other. Thank you Keke for showing the world how caring our community really can be!
I got some fucked up art myself. But still. I don't harm a single one. :P
Everyone does stupid shit in life. Just don't harm anyone else by it and you're fine.
Also, what's so bad about me getting commissions for fucked up art someone else 'enjoys'. ;)
@@RedmilesShark yeah, alot of furrys are really gross and do indescribably bad things, but they still have some good ones!
Yeah, I don’t trust anyone who associates with the furry “fandom.” Weirdos, the lot of them.
Was feeling pretty sad about staying up so late, but being able to see this a mere 15 seconds after it dropped certainly cheered me up. Thank you.
i seriously pulled an all nighter and i’m extremely exhausted and this video made me very happy
As an artist I feel the same exact way! Their community is so awesome for artists!
Say what you want about furries, but you cannot deny that they're passionate as hell and extremely polite.
feels more like obsessed and insane. maybe I'll meet a polite furry someday.
@@zeosummers3984 Dude liking something a lot does not mean they're "obsessed and insane".
@@TheAdvertisement Insane people want to turn into a dragon, normal people dont.
It's not my "fursona" or anything like that, but I'm writing a book about just an incredibly adorable centipede and I commission quite a lot of art about her. Not a lot of artists have experience drawing bugs like that! So whenever I find one, I pay more than they ask for and give a tip.
Artists are awesome.
Sure! I'd post a link but that isn't working for some reason. It's called Shedling on RoyalRoad, if you want to look it up - there may not be much, but it's free to read.
It gets to a point where if you’re weird enough, you accept everyone else because you know what it feels like
O my goodness I never thought of it like that (not saying I'm a furry hater no I support them but) this man is a genius
@@modragon1936 you can just say "they" or "person" if you dont know their gender :)
We furries are always either extremely broke or have a suspiciously large amount of money.
I just have a large weath of emotions rather than... physical weath. I'm poor as fuck.
Antifurry: "FURRY ARE MEANIE ZOZOSPDJEOXNSODJISPHILE"
Actual furry:
As a person who just recently signed up for some furry communities I confirm that they are so so soooo nice! Sure there are some weirdos but every community has that small group of assholes that gives them a bad rep. Furries though are majorly very polite and respectful and I love their community already. I feel so sad I'm not very much into anthro so I don't exactly belong there!
You can be a furry even if your not that into antro stuff! There's no qualifications, its more of a label to help yourself feel in the right place and right community! It's ok if you don't though, I can understand why you wouldn't tbh.
@@scantyoutube5649 I'm more talking about my own internal feeling of not belonging. :) The community itself is very welcoming indeed!
Technically, since anthro is like an animal with human features, just talking animals count too.
I always had a negative perception of furries, but then one of my roommates I moved in with was one and I realized that nah, they are actually super chill people. Also, Fighting games are really popular in that community, so I had a friend to play Guilty Gear and SSBM with :)
I was waiting for it to suddenly go south, but it was wholesome all the way through
now keke has discovered not only that furries are usually really nice people, many of them are suspiciously wealthy
Pretty sure furries run at least a 1/8 of the government and a 1/3 of the entire internet
@@succubasu They are everywhere, my furry friend just joined the military for cyber security.
as a furry, i must say thank you for doing this. not only has it made me feel better as an artist with the "dont underestimate yourself" but it also paints the furry fandom as really nice peeps. and i can confirm that they make sure people get paid for their worth
but i must warn you there are some people out there who are trying to make profit off the fandom and being scammy. make sure to read seller/buyer bewares! they exist to help you out and avoid the bad eggs out there
The furry fandom is only nice when it comes to commisions because they pay big money for their fursona to be drawn with their fetishes
This is so wholesome! And yea the furry community seems to have always been awesome to artists! I've never heard a bad thing in that regard💖
That was adorable ^^ I never thought about commissioning non-furry artists to try and get my character drawn. But now you've inspired me!
At first I thought this was going to be a joke surrounding the stigmatized side of the furry community, but what came of it was much more light hearted and wholesome than I anticipated and it was an enjoyable 2:20s, and the design of the commissioner really sold the wholesome part of the video, they just look so sweet and welcoming. I needed this :)
Not gonna lie, I was expecting a meme about NSFW commissions or something, but this is way better! So wholesome!
I'm so happy you had such a great experience - and that others will too after seeing this!
Daww that's so sweet, I actually have trouble finding people who want to commission me as well, so I definitely can relate u_u'
