As a herald for international women’s day, symphonic metal outfit BEYOND THE BLACK - fronted by the exceptional Jennifer Haben - present their new single “Misery”, off of their upcoming album Hørizøns, to be released via Napalm Records on June 19th.

“With 2019 having been the biggest year in our career as a band so far, we were thrilled and anxious to get back to the studio and start writing again - not just to make up to the fast and amazing development that has happened in the band since our last album, but to pin this development down also musically for everyone to hear and see. Hørizøns is unmistakably a BTB album, but with so many new facets and personality adding up to the classic BTB ID that make it a true band-album. For us this has definitely been a walk on the tightrope and we feel to have it accomplished to its fullest. Without beating around the bush, we can say that we're extremely proud and confident that Hørizøns is the best BTB album to date.“
As someone who loves the mixture of pop and metal, I completely dig this song. I'm not picky though. I'm here for the music from the bands I like. If they wanna experiment, more power to them.

If you look beyond the poppy sound, the song-writing behind this is absolutely top-notch. And once you acknowledge that, I believe there's no other option than loving the song as it is! :)

Jack Smile well, there were 2 songs she sang at the concert which weren’t on the 3 albums they have at the moment. One was a cover of ‘Salve Regina’ (she sang that at the ‘B-stage’ where she also sang the acoustic version of ‘through the mirror’ and ‘song for the godless’). The other song was indeed ‘misery’, which was played after the drum solo of Kai!

They played this live when I saw them in Bristol. I was enjoying it but wondering where it came from and assumed it was a cover of a pop song. Rather poppy for BtB but I don't think we can say that they have changed direction, based on one catchy song.

Vielleicht war das "It´s time for a change" auch einfach nur ein teaser für das Lied, da es ja auch bestandteil ist? siehe 2:20 . Stimme dir aber sonst zu :)

@@Cassadin1883 Es bleibt zu hoffen :-) .. Ich konnte mit dem Heart of the Hurricane Album leider auch schon nicht so viel anfangen. Songs of Love and Death und Lost in Forever haben , für mich, wesentlich mehr Wiederspielwert. Ich weiß daß der Druck groß ist aber das hier kann man ohne Probleme im Radio spielen und hat irgendwie nichts mehr mit den Anfängen zu tun. Amaranthe haben sich ja auch schon mal einen Ausrutscher mit Maximalism geleistet aber sie haben es mit dem letzten Album wieder alles in die richtigen Bahnen gelenkt.
@@Kirby1978 Ich muss dir um ehrlich zu sein widersprechen. Ich denke es gibt sowas wie Ausrutscher nicht ,für mich gibt es nämlich 2 Arten von Alben wenn eine Band ihren Stil ändert. Die erste Option ist, dass das Album einfach nicht gut klingt kann mal passieren aber dann höre ich es mir auch nicht an . Option 2 ist, dass das Album gelingt trotz Stilwechsel und dann kann ich es genauso mögen wenn es geil ist. Außerdem ist es letztendlich immer noch die Entscheidung des Künstlers was er für Musik macht und nicht die der Fans. Natürlich ist es schön wenn man etwas Vertrautes bekommt, aber das muss nicht immer so sein. Ich kann deine Kritik jedoch verstehen und wenn du sagst es gefällt dir nicht ok, es ist deine Meinung. Aber bewerte doch bitte die Musik und nicht nachdem was du von einer Band erwartest. Ist nur meine Meinung zum Thema.(Hierbei beziehe ich mich auf den Kommentar zu Amaranthe).Zu deinem Kommentar zu Beyond the Black kann ich nichts dagegensagen denn dieser spiegelt deine Meinung zur Musik wieder die nachvollziehbar ist.

It's not symphonic metal, it's crap, created for stupid glamour heifers. True symphonic metal was in 2000 years - Nightwish, Within Temptation...
So, habe mir den Song nun doch einige male zu Gemüte gezogen.
Es ist bekannt das es eine Stilveränderung ist, was den Song aber noch lange nicht schlecht macht.
BtB haben das Recht, wie jede andere Band, zu experimentieren und sich weiterzuentwickeln.
Wenn man die Aussage von Jennifer im Kopf hat während man den Song hört, welche war, es ist ein "Mittelfinger" - Song, dann klingt das ganze doch schon gar nicht mehr so schlecht.
Und wenn man genau hinhört, dann erkennt man auch noch sehr gut den "alten" Stil.
Was ich damit sagen möchte:
Leute entspannt euch mal, BtB ist noch immer diese großartige Band welcher wir so gerne Lauschen.
Alles wird gut, einfach zurück lehnen und genießen.

Das ist doch kein Mittelfinger Song. Das ist Softer rock am Rande zum Pop. Und klar kann sich eine Band weiterentwickeln, ändert aber nichts daran, dass der Song unglaublich schlecht ist. Schablone genommen für radiotauglichen Rock ohne Eigenständigkeit.
@@froostifroosti1454 Es ist wohl ein Mittelfingersong, weil sie in einem Interview davon sprach wie sehr sie sich von der Angst getrieben sah, dass die Leute sagen, dass ist nicht metal genug und ist nicht BtB. sie sagte da explizit, dass sie sich hier davon freigemacht haben, die Band wollte den Song machen, also haben sie ihn gemacht, obwohl sie wissen, dass er poppig ist und vielleicht nicht jedem passt.
Man hat schon den Eindruck, dass sie an dem Bandwechsel und den shitstorm danach sehr knabbern musste. Aber wenn es sie selbstbewusster gemacht und auch ein paar Lektionen gebracht hat, umso besser.

Ahhh - come on ... Amaranthe is more Techno-Metal with a nice setup of various voices what makes it fun (for me) to hear ... If you like Trance-Death-Metal have a look at Rage Of Light.
After all, Amaranthe is not Pop (the growling part kills it totally for every "normal" radio station ;-) ...
I don't know what exactly IS the plan from BTB - Jennifer took part at "Sing meinen Song". This was great and smart as well as Floor Jansen took part at a similar show in the Netherlands (which was even better).
But if the conclusion (for BTB) will be to be more poppy ... I would say: Metal Singers STOP it. Don't do drugs :--)

I don't understand why people are hating this song so much saying it sounds too pop. I mean I get why they say it but some bands have to do what they have to do to survive. If this sound is giving you more followers then good for you hopefully that helps you to make a buck and hopefully you can continue creating music. More and more generas are mixing with metal and we can all hear that with WT and other bands like Amaranthe , Delain etc.
This band should have absolutely changed their name after Jennifer and the old band members went their separate ways because this sound is not even closely similar to before. If this is the direction the band wants to go now that’s fine, but this isn’t the music that made me a fan of Beyond the Black.
Have we forgotten about the same fact that happened to Evanescence or nightwish?

metalslugmasters Anyone’s allowed to like this for what it is, but I’d consider this more of a de-evolution from the sound they had before. Structurally It’s not a bad song, but it’s no longer the BtB from before. An evolution of their sound would have kept the symphonic metal elements and expanded upon them even further. This is tonally completely different and leans more towards pop-rock than metal or any sub-genre of metal.

I think it will have others but heart of the hurricane was a different style to previous works and the rest of the album wasn't similar. Maybe it will be a mix.

I've tried to listen to the whole album. It's lame and feels like an awkward attempt to go mainstream.

I subscribed to this channel because of Unleash the Archers and Nervosa. This is odd, especially as this is my first time hearing this group
Napalm Records started some years ago to recruit female fronted bands just because, somehow, they sell despise the quality of their music. And a lot of these bands aren't even symphonic, some simple orchestration with guitar distortion it's what the labels right now want to make you believe is symphonic metal when actually is badly written pop.
First two were good, maybe with too many fillers expecially the first one, but they weren't really metal nor symphonic. Btw, I went to their concert in Italy when they were a support for Powerwolf (a pop band) and Epica (too much symphonic parts prerecorded) only for them since I don't like the main events, but right now I doubt I'll see them even if they play as the main band (next tour with Amaranthe for example, I'll skip it).

Ich weiß, ich lehne mich jetzt sehr weit aus dem Fenster, aber nach dem sich dramatisch aufbauenden Anfang klingen die ersten 30 Sekunden mehr nach Schlager als nach dem sonst oft genannten Pop, von Metal ganz zu schweigen.
Das neue Album werde ich wohl erstmals auf Spotify probehören, bevor ich überlege, es mir als CD und Vinyl zu kaufen.
Ich lege jetzt erstmal die Best of CD der Black Edition ein und geniesse die Musik, die für mich massgeblich beim Einstieg in den Metal war. 🤘🏼
For those who are complaining, the band ALWAYS have a feet on pop music (and there's no demerit on it) and never hide this, so there's no surprise here. And this is just a single. Singles are always more acessible. And the song are great! Love it ❤️
I fully agree, I had the same feeling when "Million lightyears" came out, a bit too poppy when I heard it first, but the album was amazing. Wait and see...
What a hell, the beginning caught me of guard (clicked play and started browsing in other tab), thought I got a Eurovision ad... Pleasant song, but so not my cup of tea.
Not what I was expecting after Heart of a Hurricane. More punk rock, and with a positive vibe that is different from their normal angst. But once I put that aside, it's very enjoyable. :)

If you check the wiki page, you can see that the singer kicked out every single band member after the second album, and hired new ones. This is not the same band, only the singer is the same. The new guys suck.

Wie wäre es die Band und die Bandmitglieder den Scheiß machen zu lassen, auf den sie Bock haben? Es haben schon so viele Musiker davon berichtet, wie "Fans" sie versuchen in eine Schublade zu stecken, aus der sie ja nicht rausdürfen. Glücklicherweise zeigen die meisten hier zumindest ein bisschen Verständnis dafür :) Eine Band muss sich auch ausprobieren dürfen.
Lasst euch nix sagen, BTB. Ist jetzt auch nicht mein Favorit, aber trotzdem geiler Sound.

I personally prefer metal and goth though according to some of you guys in the chat, this is a mix between metal and pop, though I love how it's a joyful metal song, it takes the themes of Drowning in darkness and makes it cheerful. Wonderful song.

Just this morning I've listened to "Songs of love and death" and "Lost in Forever". After them this one is... boring. Unfortunately. Previous album was much more usual then first ones, but there still were things more interesting than this one (especially in acoustic versions).
I agree with all commenters who say that they miss old sympho-metal sound. It was unusual, recognizable. After re-recording of "Forget My Name" (last their single that can be described as perfect shot) they started to loose it.
I hope they'll make step back to make new steps forward on their original own road again.
I don’t see any problems in experimenting with genres. The main thing is that the music should be of high quality, and the group has no problems with this.

It may be more 'pop rock' than metal, but guys, this is the first released single on the new album. I still like this band--I do prefer the symphonic metal though. Just a question for those who don't like this sound, would you rather listen to this or an actual pop artist? I like this song and this band.
The question is not the comparison between Pop and Rock or Heavy Metal. The question is what I (for myself) or other people like and expect from a band. As I explained it earlier in a German post: You can do a lot of things - even as a heavy metal band. You can play unplugged instruments, you can add even synthesizers and of course being experimental. But you certainly can't do music that sounds being made in a rush without any love. And - sorry - for me "Misery" sounds exactly like this.
If you ask me to choose between this pop-rock and pop I will give you other names: Nightwish, Lacuna Coil, Within Temptation, Evanescene, MoonSun (rather unknown), Delain, ... ... like it a bit harder? Epica, Ad Infinitum (pretty new), Rage Of Light, Dead By April, Disturbed, Parasite Inc. , ...
Like it more poppy? - Pretty Reckless, Halestorm, Battle Beast, Placebo, ...
Anyhow - I certainly missed a lot of names - please add ... There is certainly no need for me to have a love-less-pop-band named (once) Beyond The Black. If they will change like this, I still have their old songs and don't plan to visit anymore any concert of them ....

Die neue Nightwish hat mir beim ersten hören, wie auch dieser Song, nicht gefallen. Die Nightwish wurde beim zweiten dritten hören doch immer besser. Jennifers Stimme mag ich nach wie vor sehr, der Sound gefällt mir allerdings nicht wirklich. Schade.

As someone who's a big metal fan there's no denial that some metal fans are the dullest of the dull. So, once you consider yourself a metal fan you can't like anything that sounds a little bit more pop? And once something has sort of a pop appeal to it those so called "metalheads" use the term "pop" as an insult, just like people use "gay" or "lesbian" as insults, as if being gay or lesbian was something people should be ashamed of. Simply saying "i don't like it" or "i don't like this new sound" would have been enough.
OK - I don't like it - exactly for the reasons you mentioned later on - sounds like everyday-pop for me - with maybe a better voice than being generated with autotune ... Allthough the song-structure is too easy for me. Don't get me wrong - I even like pop - Lady Gaga is great, as well is Sia or Ellie Goulding, Billy Ilish is funny in her own way ... I won't consider myself being to much metal-focused ...
The first single is often a bit poppy because it catches the attention of a larger crowd. Remember "million lightyears" was no different. Just wait to hear for the rest of the album before spitting on their work...

Gefällt mir um einiges besser als das Original, und Jenny in Lack und Leder? Wow, tolle Frau auf jeden Fall, geniale Sängerin ebenfalls. Aber bei den anderen Stücken ruhig wieder etwas mehr Gas geben^^.
For people who just listen to metal, this is kind of strange. But for someone who really likes music independent of their genre, this becomes very interesting.

Ich schätze die Band ja sehr und würde mich auch als extrem offen gegenüber Stil-Veränderungen bezeichnen - aber der Song hat, mit Ausnahme der Band-Mitglieder, nicht mehr viel mit Beyond the Black zu tun. Weichgewaschener Pop-Metal ohne Herz und Leidenschaft. Schade!
Kann Dir da nicht zustimmen ..beyond the Black hat sich nur weiterentwickelt und ich denke das man eigene Türen nicht auf Genres begrenzen sollte sondern Vielfalt nutzen wenn sie zu Verfügung steht ..ich finde dieser Song ist auch ohne Härte sehr stark und auch emotional ..bei eingeschränkten Türen übersieht man vielleicht auch schnell Dinge ..der Song verdient mehr wie eine Kritik aus einem Impuls aus Engstirnigkeit und vergleichen ..vielleicht sollte man auch nicht vergleichen ..vielleicht lieber sich auf neues einlassen ..über Linkin Park wurde nach Weiterentwicklung auch gemeckert bis man erkannte wie gut die neuen Sachen wirklich waren und sind ..whatever ..piece
@@sileylasloum.6848 Wie gesagt: Ich finde Weiterentwicklung wichtig, neue Wege zu beschreiten, ist für eine Band essentiell wichtig. Die Frage ist halt: Aus welchen Beweggründen tut man das? Weil man es als kreativen Prozess versteht und den Drang verspürt, sich musikalisch weiterzuentwickeln? Oder einfach nur, um etwas angepasster auch von Radiostationen gehört und gespielt zu werden - und somit kommerziell-erfolgreicher zu werden? Beides ist vollkommen legitim und verständlich. Als Fan der ersten Stunde muss ich aber nicht beides mögen.

@@florian4161 da gebe ich Dir recht ..du musst das nicht mögen aber als Fan erster Stelle kannst Du Dir schon denken das es beyond the Black egal ist ob sie durch die Entwicklung jetzt halt im Radio zu hören sind oder nicht ..also ich denke die gehen nach Gefühl obwohl ich selber nicht Fan erster Stelle bin ..kenne nur Alben von denen aus verschiedenen Decades :)..und nja fand das jetzt nicht schlecht bzw hab garnicht drauf geachtet ob der Song jetzt hart genug ist oderso ..hab einfach nur gehörrt ..ich mein Härte ist denk ich eh relativ oder ..Songs können auch mit sanften tönen megahart sein ..und grad im metelgenre gibt's dafür viele gute Beispiele aber ich verstehe was Du meinst :)..
Stimme dir da zu. Der Spirit von den alten Liedern ist in Misery irgendwie nicht vorhanden. Selbst wenn man ein Fan einer Band ist, gibt es dennoch Kandidaten die mich nicht gut, sprich positiv aufnimmt. Was völlig normales! :)

Pretty good! I really enjoyed the song! It has a vibe that reminds me of Metallite somehow! I don't understand most of negative comments, sure it's not their usual style and I love their own style but this one sounds good too and Jennifer does an excellent job on the mic, her voice is very versatile!

First things first, I like the song. I liked it when I first heard it live...and I like this version.
Now that I've gotten that out of the way, there's a side of me that wonders if this will be the song (and album?) that allows BtB to reach a broader audience and, in turn, to travel and perform for that broader audience. That's not to say that it will or it won't. We'll know a whole lot more in June. I have my fingers crossed.
Two years later...still love this song. And, here's hoping that there's something new on the not-too-distant horizon.
Definitely on the poppy side... I would listen to it but I definitely prefer the more symphonic sound from previous albums. We will wait and see what the new one is like I guess.
