I'm surprised you didn't include Choice as a reason why people live in cities. Cites offer a variety of things to choose from: what kind of job to have, where to live, what to do for recreation -- and this gives people the feeling that they are choosing their life circumstances. There is perhaps nothing as defeating to the human spirit as having no choice. That's the reason cities are expensive: for each thing you choose to do, all the things you didn't choose to do need to be paid for too. But we're willing to pay a premium in order to have a range of options available to us. Mind you...having things to choose among means that you are one of the things other people may choose or not choose, hence cites can be lonely places.
And in n out.. Only found in cities
That's pretty much the path of least resistance, you CHOOSE the easier life thus its a choice to move to a city.
@@cabron247 this is overly simplistic. Specialized workers (outside of agriculture and forestry) live in cities because that is where their jobs generally are. It isn’t “least resistance,” or for an “easy life,” it is just the only thing that would make logical sense. Why drive hours a day when you can live near where your high paying, specialized job is located?
@@elimorozov4769 that kinda is "least resistance" in a way since you mentioned commute time.

Cities have to exist to keep the Godzilla population thriving.
I'm from Metro Manila and I did not realize how densely populated this place is until I came to visit Brisbane. Jfc it's not even a joke. The astonishing difference in population has a huge impact in the psychology of a person. Suddenly, I can breathe well, able to sleep early, wake up early, eat just enough and did not crave for more intake, and many more.
Ikr! I live close to Manila but I mainly stay at home here cuz of the pollution. My hometown is small, but living conditions here is a little bit better.
Something else that I, a random American high schooler, want to mention; European cities, specifically those with mixed commercial and residential zones, are even more efficient than cities with split residential and commercial districts because then cities can expand upwards instead of outward.
I think there’s a Vsauce or CGP Grey video on why some cities expand up instead of out. I’ll try to find the vid and link it here

St. Petersburg: 5,3m residents (0,42), not close enough to half
Novosibirsk: 1,8m residents (0,144 or 1/6), not even a half of third.

Russia is not a country, it's a prison of nations
Moscow's 12.5 mil is only according to official statistics. There's a lot of illegal immigrants from other countries as well as immigrants from other regions who don't change their registration, so the real figure is closer to 20m.

Labeeb Ahmad-Sanni good for you? 🤷🏼♀️
Frankfurt is a hoax.
Istanbul and Moscow are bigger than London, and Saint Petersburg, Berlin, Madrid, Kiev and Rome are bigger than Paris.
Maybe in the video you wanted to say "the bigger metropolitan/urban areas in the EU/Western Europe", that would be correct, with London and Paris closely in 1st and 2nd, with some sources indicating Paris as the first, and others London.
rodrigopaim82 even then Paris would be Beaten by Both Berlin and Madrid
That's probably exactly what he meant, as Madrid is: "...the third-largest city in the European Union(EU) after London and Berlin, and its metropolitan area is the third-largest in the EU after those of London and Paris."
One of the best and most conceptual videos you've made!
I'm born and raised in Düsseldorf and I also currently live there. The ratio phenomenon is known as the pareto distribution, and can be applied to anything with numerical representation. It is not exact/precise, it is a rough correlation, one that to this day, has no confirmed explanation. It's very interesting!

I hate to be that moaner on the internet, but I don't like that you said the population of Paris was 2.2 million. Paris (officially) is the tiny, extremely densely populated core of a massive urban conurbation home to almost 11 million people. Admittedly, this is slightly higher than the population of London's urban area (closer to 10 million) so it wouldn't exactly prove your point; however, London's metro area is still roughly 2 million inhabitants higher than Paris's, which also gives a much better visualisation of their actual size.
I also have to point out (sorry) that Moscow (by official size, it's technically part of Europe as is east of the Ural mountains) is home to around 3 million more people than London (also by official size). When we compare their urban areas Moscow has almost 6 million more people than London, and by metro area Moscow is still roughly 6 million larger.
Edit: oh yeah, the other city populations annoy me too; official city boundaries are just too arbitrary to use whilst trying to prove a point.
Once again I'm sorry and thanks for reading the whole comment.
Yeah I'm pretty sure if you include surrounding metropolitan areas LA is bigger than New York City too. There's WAY more people packed into the entire LA conurbation and all of its sprawl than in tiny little NYC.
I was just about to make these same points! Thank you for writing this comment.
Pfhorrest no New York metro area is 18M, LA is 12M, they are still 1 and 2, but Phoenix only has 4M, and gets bumped down a lot

Taking Russia and Turkey out, London and Paris ARE 1-2...but only if you count the whole metropolitan area, not just the actual cities proper. @@Shevock not true. Zipf's law is very real.
