One of the best videos I have watched. Helped me a ton on figuring out how to decoy greater geese. Came to comment after listening to the last Dive Bomb Squadcast with Hunter Grounds.
I use to hunt the Upper Peninsula Michagan and we shot quite a few very small geese about 2 pounds. Very high pitched sound and even mounted one. Also when I hunted Horicon Marsh in Wisconsin. Always saw 3 sizes of geese. We called them Giants, Standard (lesser) and Cacklers. Shot mostly the Standard. You could also tell the difference in pitch. Disagree that you don't see Cacklers in the Mississippi Flyway. Never saw the Cacklers in Indiana though.
Wow. What brilliant video and what a great asset of having Forrest joining divebomb industries we only have the big Canada’s down our way and I’ve learnt a lot of this video in the way of setting up my Silos. Thanks again Forrest.
Wow! Forrest this was incredible. I want to take what you said and scribe it into stone. I have a feeling I’m going to watch this video about once a week until the season gets here. Then I’ll be watching it twice a week! Awesome calling!
Gret video and great reference to my friend David Coleman on the Eastern Shore we have harvested different types of lessers and I do believe some cacklers have been harvested once again great video
Fantastic breakdown on hunting method for a novice like myself. Thanks so much for taking the time. Please do one on Ducks next? Really appreciate it man.
I always like hunting greaters and they’re fairly easy to decoy. Me and my dad will go out and set anywhere between 6 and 100 decoys and often kill limits without calling once.
I live in the Willamette valley in Oregon. This is the wintering area for the cacklers. I see hunters trying to use honker tactics for cacklers and they rarely shoot any cacks. The geese live on green grass and winter wheat. They want to be in the middle of the field where there is no cover. Many times we have to put decoys 70 to 80 yds out because they don't want to go near brush or cover. They are very wary and circle many times. We have to take them on the swing or the fly-by. Many times a 50yd shot is a close shot. There is no good camo that is fresh green grass color. There is no driving on muddy sloppy farmers fields with standing water. Big shot in big guns and calling. Cacks are a challenge, they have a thousand fields to choose from that are all the same, blow the out and then find out where they went.
I live in Veneta Oregon which is about 8 miles west of Eugene and we get thousands upon thousands of Cackler’s here in the Willamette Valley. And they come down like a tornado funnel when they land in these Grassfield. And they’re in groups of thousands. I know you said that lessers final down like a tornado. But here in Willamette Valley cacklers or basically the main goose to be hunted. And they are very very leery and hard to hunt. I would say more so than the Canadian honkers
unfortunately we don't have anything but giant canadas in the northeast, but a lot of what you explained in this video seemed to make sense. One thing I seemed to agree with is smaller spreads. If I ever get the opportunity to hunt else where I'll definitely take these tips for lessers and cacklers into consideration.
Big geese like to land outside or into bigger gabs in spreads. They like to land outside and walk into the spread. Little geese are greedy little pigs. They will jump to the thinks or the body of the spread.
Bunching up decoys for honkers is no bueno. They don’t like it. Honkers have huge wingspans so they don’t bunch up they keep about a 6’ gap between birds. Btw I’ve killed a ton of birds with my og Olt A-50 flute and a big river. You will never see me hunting with a short reed and a lot of guys that blow short reeds have a tendency to over call
Here in Oregon the socks don’t work to well we pack the decoys tight foot apart and mix in full body’s looks the birds here pile in a group inches apart we create a ball like them and it works wonders even if we don’t get the big flocks the little groups of 20 or so drop no issue
I plan on watching this video a 100 more times. Lots of really good info. Thanks Forrest and Dive Bomb.

Bill length separates the different between the sub-species. Yes Cackler's do go through Manitoba via Churchill swing down off the bay
Gret video and great reference to my friend David Coleman on the Eastern Shore we have harvested different types of lessers and I do believe some cacklers have been harvested once again great video

I thought a Canada goose was a Canada goose , never knew… those pictures of the cacklers look completely different than our Canadas here in Michigan

Thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed it!!!
Very detailed oriented video thanks for sharing.
Great video. Thanks, Forrest. One typo to take care of. Arctic, not Artic. Easy mistake and does not take away from a fine video
Thank you Forrest! What calls are you using? Incredible calling so have a hunch it’s not the 20$ call I have lol
Loving these videos
how does this only have 72 views? Good description of lessers vs greaters!

Us on the Westcoast break our geese down into 3 groups. Big boys, true lessers, and squeaker's.
I’m in central Colorado and we honestly have a pretty even mix of all three we get quite a few cacklers
Really?? I’ve been hunting geese in Colorado for twenty years and haven’t killed a cackler! Tons of lessers, but never a cackler. That’s sweet!
Dive Bomb Industries it’s not a crazy amount but we get quite a few and bye love the decoys and vidjas keep up the killer work
Very informative video 👍
Great video!!!
Any videos of actual spreads in the fields?
Yes sir, check out our Death from Below video series!
@@divebombsquad I'm subscribed there. Thought you might have some more instructional videos
How would you set a spread in west Texas hunting lessers, snows, and specks flying together?
I’ll definitely cover that in a later episode!
Good to know I always thought cacklers and lessers were the same
what is the plane for? Illegal scouting?
What brand call are you using on the greater
Good stuff
