- Nickel Plate 587 and Norfolk and Western 611 and 1218, in a once-in-a-lifetime triplehead run from Roanoke to Lynchburg in July, 1989. This extended segment includes pacing and several runbys between Montvale and Bedford.
587's Whistle Sounds Awesome! What A Noise,
At 1:55, you just KNOW at least one of those drivers got where they were going and told everyone what they'd seen at that bridge. And nobody would have believed them!
Wow! 587s whistle sounds awesome! :)
Nothing beats 1218's whistle, I've fallen in Love with that sound when I was 3.
Love 611's whistle!
Superb, thanks for all your recent postings. This one is really great... especially the first runby with all three engines blowing their whistles.
That canteen was sold to the Indiana Transportation Museum for use behind 587. At that time, it hadn't been repainted.
@sajdrj Yeah I know, 611 at one time had that tender but what I was pointing out is that #587 is using the 611 tender. I think that tender shouldve stuck with 611 because it complements it very well, although the NS tuscan painted tender was good to because it fit the cars.
i love this... rode the 1218 from Richmond to Roanoke in 93....... 1989 a good year to be alive..
I Love The Sweet N&W Hooter Whistle On 1218
@trainmandan05 did you notice that 611 had 587's water canteen
The Excursion makes it's way through the valley.
@PereMarquette1223 Actually it ran in excursion service through 1992, I think that was the year we rode it. They tooks as home by another route on a diesel.. regards
THAT would be a train i would stop and see!
The Whistle that the 587 used was eventually replaced with a different Whistle between 1991 and 1993

1:58 587: yay we're crossing the bridge
She WILL but volunteers at the Indiana Transportation Museum are still working on completing here FRA mandated overhaul. She'll be back in service by late 2010 if not early 2011.
Let's save the 587!
1218: I'm so big
611: Shut up
Why does NKP 587 have the water canteen that has N&W 611's tuscan red and gold stripe design? Shouldnt that be given to 611 because it obviously matches 611.
Agreed. I've never understood why 611's auxiliary water tank was solid black with gold lettering the majority of the time. Then again look at UP's 844, it's tanks are yellow, maybe design goes out the window on the railway.
They sold the N&W 611 original auxiliary water tender to The 587 group and that was before this
PatHoffman10 UP has the auxiliary water tenders painted Armour Yellow to match the passenger cars.
Zoltan Bebto from WA.Silverdale.
This would've been a hell of a way to end the steam program..
Can you imagine a triple header with A Class 1218, Challenger 3985, AND Big Boy 4014 (assuming she ever returns to the UP Steam Roster)?
Max Medaglia just pray for the 1218 now ma friend
does 587 still run?
611 Whistle sucks
Its not!
