It's quite hard to find content featuring black women who have been through this specific mental health challenge. Thankful to Debrae and the host for this episode. Recovering from a psychotic break myself, really needed this

This is really inspiring talking about cultural context and experience of psychosis. It’s a really difficult word to come to terms with and it’s helpful to hear a frank and open discussion such as this. Thank you both from another Christian person struggling with mental health 😊

Your support will be significantly helpful. I recently went through psychosis but I dont feel my family truly understands the seriousness of the condition. They lack the ability to properly support me. Of course, it was more difficult for me due to the legal troubles I was facing during recovery. I lost all my belongings, including myself.
In my bouts with Psychosis the artists rihanna was talking to me. I also seemed to go through a possession like experience. I was speaking tongues and ended up being sedated and hospitalized for a month.

Are you still medicated? How are you doing now? Thanks for any feedback. I'm trying to assist a family member.

This made me cry 😭, thank you for sharing your story. I have been through something similar and my mom was supportive but from another continent, it’s difficult when you don’t have a huge support system. ❤

Could you please say more on how your mom was supportive from another continent, what did she do to make you feel supported?

She lives in Africa whilst I live in Europe, I left home more than 5 years ago. Well when I had my break down after I had gotten help and came to, she would just stay on the phone with me and It really helped that she opened her mind and disregarded the stigma of mental health that is present in the part of Africa I come from. She would always ask questions that seem mundane but helped a lot in my daily life adjusting back into a life that looked and felt different from what I had before. Question like : what are you thinking about now, have you taken a shower today, have you gotten anything to eat, would you like to take a walk. Obviously it would have been much more helpful if she was there with me but it helped me so much in the few weeks after my discharge from psych because I wouldn’t talk to anyone else because it just didn’t feel safe. She would also reinforce that what happened would not and didn’t have to define me as a person, how I’d look back in the future and be grai made it through… things like that😊

I was diagnosed with schizzoaffective disorder back in 2016 psychosis is a sicko im glad that now more than ever the stigma surrounding mental illnesses is slowly changing for the better, people are becoming more educated on it and more and more people are feeling safe and comfortable to speak up about their own struggles humanity still has a long way to go but I have noticed a big shift in this area when it comes to the stigma alot of it is thanks to social media and that fact that it is easier for people to connect to eachother and spread knowledge with the power of technology

@324A21T well my first episode was the bipolar type and I had grandiosity complex going on and my second episode was the depressive type which had me believing I was anything and everything bad like I was literally a demon and hurting anybody in my presence lol
