My favorite “haul” videos are the ones that aren’t just for the sake of “stuff” but how and why an artist uses their supplies. Thanks for sharing!
Well said! Me too!
So glad you enjoyed it!
Sandi, I am a "hobbyist" artist who just started in the past couple of years painting and only a few months of learning how to draw for the first time at 54 years olld (a total novice and not naturally talented!); delving into acrylics, gouache, just started learning watercolors, colored pencils, chalk pastels (want to learn oil pastels and oil paints in the future!). I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for the education you have provided on your channel that I have been watching over the last several months -I went through ALL of your past videos!! I so appreciate all you do and I have learned more than I could have dreamed to help me on my art journey. Thank you, thank you, thank you for all you do Sandi Hester! I anxiously await on the calender each 2 weeks for your next release and the gems that you are going to provide. You made a world of difference in my adventures into ART. I just put together my first customized acrylic palette to begin painting on my own and mixing colors and am scared to death, but I would never have done it without watching you! You inspired me to take the next steps in my journey. Thanks a million!! P.S. I purchased the Complete Birds of the World book you recommended to learn how to draw birds. It's fantastic! My birds are truly a bit hilarious, but improving...I am attempting to paint an emu. 🤣 (I figured I would start at the beginning of the book and just work my way through the book of birds to practice drawing and painting with my new palette...We'll see how that adventure goes.)
Thank you for those kind words and I’m so happy the channel has been such a help to you ❤️❤️❤️
What a lovely comment this isso inspiring so much of life ithought art was just about talent. Now I’ve learned it’s more about dedication and practice :)
I resemble this beautiful comment so much. Thank all y’all for such a beautiful community.
Yes! I completely agree with your assessment of the 500 series Strathmore mixed media journal. I have a few of them and I have actually always loved the paper, but the spine is so tight. They actually totally turned me off sewn bindings for a long time. I got one of the Talens Art Creation sketchbooks thinking it wouldn’t be that great (didn’t think I’d like the paper) and I do like the paper, although it is completely different from the Strathmore paper, but the best thing is that they LAY FLAT. I think you really need to put some muscle into breaking in the Strathmore books, but I haven’t dared to do so. Strathmore has confirmed that the paper in their wirebound mixed media Visual Journals is the same as in the 500 series mixed media journals, so I do buy a lot of those. But, I don’t love the wire and the overall quality of the product, aside from the paper, isn’t as nice. I have bought some loose sheets of the same paper, plus they make mixed media boards with it.
Sandi ,
Always enjoy when you also share your inspirational art books. It's like the cherry on the icing🍰
Looking forward to your art book haul, next time 🤗💕
Yes, art book haul coming soon
I love that crazy brush! It is so nice to take a look into your beautiful sketchbooks
Thank you so much!
here we go.. the best part of my Friday. Sitting down with a cup of coffee and watching a Sandi video !!
Awe - thanks 🥰❤️❤️❤️
Thank you❤ enjoyed so much! And i love the beautiful pot.😊
You are so welcome!
Th Christopher Wood art book looks really interesting can't wait to see your book haul. Great art equipment thanks for sharing.
It’s really good and can’t wait to share it
Love it all. Especially the brushes!
Please forgive my familiarity but as a fellow sinus sufferer, I thought I'd mention some things that help me, in case you don't use them.
Saline nasal spray, gargle with warm salty water, and Budesonide nasal spray. I hope it takes up swiftly for you. Xxx
Saline nasal spray really helps clear my sinuses.
Don't be scared of the blank page 🎉 thank you for sharing! I was inspired to doodle in my own sketchbook ❤
It would be nice if the shippers would use packing material in those boxes. So disappointing when things come all banged up, especially when they cost so much. Thanks for the haul! They are so much fun!
It is disappointing when things come damaged
In her Domestika sketchbook course, Sarah VanDongen recommends your channel😊. I love my long reach stapler! To keep the paper from swelling (from paint moisture etc) near the staples, I run a length of masking tape on top of the staples, covering a bit of paper on both sides, if that makes sense 👍🏼. (Otherwise the staples can open and come loose)
Great tip!
You make my day!!! These are my favorite videos Sandi!!!
🥰🥰🥰
A day you upload is a good day! ❤
Sandi those abstracts are one of the most beautiful abstracts I have ever seen 😮 woow!! Thank you for another wonderful and inspirational video ❤
Really??? Thank you!
I was also going to mention that I had a similar thing happen with that exact Fabriano pad, except that it was in many more pieces. Blick sent me a new one but let me keep the first one. I also put it back together, using padding compound (which I learned about from you in an old video about making watercolor blocks) so it was as good as new. I try not to take advantage of Blick’s generosity too much, though. On the one hand, they SHOULD be sending intact products packaged well (and they usually do), on the other hand I know that they typically don’t require customers to send back damaged items (with proof of the damage) so I feel like it’s taking advantage of that policy to use it too much and the damaged product is useable. In that case I didn’t originally know that I could easily put it back together. (Actually I wouldn’t have been able to if I hadn’t happened to have the right product to do so.) But it was very exciting to realize it wasn’t a lost cause!
I love how excited you get! Makes me laugh too! I love getting new art supplies so I understand the excitement! Nice hall. Love those books
Since I’m not purchasing much it’s extra fun these days!
Thank you for sharing your art haul. It was interesting to see how you will use your supplies. Books are so inspiring, aren't they? Good video. Have a good weekend.
Yes they are!
Absolutely love your haul videos Sandi and I don't know how I missed this but knowing you post more often than I have seen you, I went looking for you. Surprise!!!! love this. I have been following you for so long here and on IG but I can't remember if you went to school or are self taught !!! I think I am going to search your videos. Hope to see another video really soon. Thanks so much . Kathleen.
Love ❤️ 😍 💖 that little pottery vase !@ little whimsical folklore style birdies. Great idea. Love all the Art Haul Loved it all Great inspirations ❤️ 🙌
Thank you! 😊
Lovely vlog! Thank you for sharing all your information on supplies and the inspiration! Blessings!❤
You are so welcome!
I LOVE LOVE LOVE Strathmore’s mixed media sketchbooks. A top fav BUT haven’t seen one that size yet. Looks fantastic. And what a fun art haul. 🎉I’m so jealous of your stapler.
I do love that stapler!
Lots of fun!
Wow . Can't wait to see the inside of that book.
I love your UA-cam channel! You have given me so much inspiration and helped me over many bumps in my art making. Because you have given me so many great tips on painting I have one for you. It is called "Miracle Sponge" and can be purchased at Dick Blick. They sell several sizes but the one I like is about 8 X 11. They come really flat ( two in a package) and you can cut them into shapes if you want. I cut mine down just enough to fit the top lid of a plastic food container that I keep left over acrylic paint in. Actually, I keep the paint in smaller, empty cat food containers (Tasteful by Blue Buffalo) which are then placed inside the plastic food container that I saved from Grub Hub. The lid is rectangular and once you cut the sponge to size and glue it to the inside of the lid, once dry, you can wet the sponge and it expands. it stays wet and keeps the acrylic paint moist for a long time. I love it. You might already know about the sponge but I don't remember seeing it on any of the containers you save your paint in so I thought I would give you a heads up. Keep up the good, no, I mean great work.
The princeton brushes are in the transparent acrylic handles for the square bristles and are usually wooden handles for round bristles
You can use regular white school glue to glue the pages back together, if you don't have PVA glue or gel medium.
Wonderful. Gorgeous vase 💗🐦 I adore and follow Peggy too 😃
She’s great!
I enjoyed seeing all the brushes, very interesting and helpful. Great haul video, thank you. I love seeing your paintings and sketchbooks.
Thank you so much!
The dollar store has a plastic "small" 3 compartment water ... deal.. with handle... and make up brushes for the mopping. Also, giving some of the brushes a hair cut gives a great movement on substrates. Ann, Florida fan
Sandy, I’m sure you have seem John Beckler he is one of the best abstract artists, I painted one of his abstract, but change some of the design , it was my first had it for 6 yrs , well I moved and hug it our in front of my apartment, my neighbor son love it and I sold my first real painting, I was so shocked , you have help me so much about others with your encouragement and showing about paint and brushes . Thank you
Such a great fun video ❤ love seeing how you use your supplies! Sorry soo many of them were packaged poorly 🤦🏾♀️
Get well soon
Thank you for sharing xx
Thanks so much! 😊
Love an art book haul so look forward to that
I love abstract I actually sold a abstract painting for the first time I was blown away.
Great video, Sandi! Fun to see how you interact with your supplies. That marker brush nib idea looks intriguing. Peggy's ceramic piece is just lovely. Enjoy!
Thanks so much!
Love your videos. Love the pot!
I dont know what u have that is so special? 😍 otherwise when i try to watch yt videos about art i cant bear me to get really mad at the person because she is talking too slow or turn the page on a sketchbook too slow or something alse.
But with you im so calm and i love your art and your yt Chanel! Thank you🙏🏻❤️❤️❤️
So pleased you got the Christopher Wood book. Tempted to buy one for myself, so thanks! 👍❤️
It's so good!
I love Princeton brushes, but, yes, they are always a mix of wood and plastic handles like that. I use the Neptune line and love it for watercolor. Also, on that Canson XL paper, have you tried the Mixed Media? I use both that and the Watercolor, but the Mixed Media has more of that Bristol surface. I love working on Hot Press as well. Bumpy paper aggravates me sometimes. 😂 I can't wait to hear more on your eclectic portraits! That sneak peek was lovely!
@lightwavz does the Canson XL Mixed Media paper seem almost like a multi-ply paper to you? I tried it once and got this sense that it could “delaminate,” if that makes sense, and I didn’t like it for that reason.
Great haul. I love the excitement. New supplies are the best. Enjoy.
Yes they are!
Wonderful! Thank you.
You are a wonderful artist! You inspire me a lot!
Thank you so much 🤗
Please do a video on how you pack for these art trips. Your trip out with all your supplies as well as your trip home with finished art work. Do you put everything in a checked suitcase separate from your other luggage?
Love those bird paintings you shared a peak of. Fun art haul too. 😀
Thanks so much 😊
Great video as always. Thank you Sandi! 😊 I have just donated many of my older art books to my local library so I look forward to slowly filling up my studio bookcase again. It’ll be interesting to hear what you think of your newest book from Christopher Wood. I’ll have to look back to jot the name down of that Australian artist. I need a good book on still life. While we’re on the topic of books, when is yours coming out? 😉
Your haul videos are very educational and inspiring Sandi!
So glad to hear that Denise!❤️
I am shocked how badly they packed the books..
Hi Sandi! Awaiting this week’s video which I’m hoping will be about your gelli plate painting! I keep meaning to tell you that I buy packs of those Simmons paintbrushes cheap when i see them at the kind of overstock type stores like Marshalls, TJ Maxs and Ross. Also…know where you can get those little plastic three sectioned water buckets? Temu! And I just ordered a bigger nylon, collapsible bucket that has two sections!
I very much like your paintings - gives me ideas.....!!!! THX
Glad you like them!
Hi Sandi, if you like using different tools to apply paint, you might try picking up some silicone brushes or a catalyst tool.
Sandiiiii. If you ever travel through Louisville KY, PLEASE drop in to see us at Artist & Craftsman Supply! This could be a shameless plug for my employer, but I'd love to meet you and talk about art supplies because they are my favorite things. :)
I will Megan!
Sandi, I CAN'T!!!! There was sooo many paintings in this Vlog that I LOVED so much. This was a visual feast! I'm definitely going to re-watch this a little bit later with a nice big cup of tea. I'm just going to say just a tiny bit like the lady by the window that you painted on the cover - the view in that window was so lovely. There was a painting in your sketchbook, a landscape that reminded me of Gabrielle Munter, I know I probably butchered her name. And your portraits that we just got to sneak peek at them OMG! And I really loved the two abstracts you did! The abstract book looks yummy. I know I'm probably missing stuff but I'm gonna re-watch the whole thing. I know this was about the art haul, but the bits of paintings totally sidetracked me. Oh, and the one thing I'd like to ask regarding works on paper is how do you display them? I don't care for paintings that are matted. Is there another way to present them?
Anyway, thanks so much for the video. Hope you feel better soon, take care.
I’m so glad to hear that!! Thank you! I frame my paintings on paper floating so all edges show. I keep meaning to film a video showing the process I just haven’t done it yet
@sandihester Sandi, so do you mean that you're able to somehow put them in one of those floater frames without a matt?
@@pamzavada5269 no I float it within a regular frame where it doesn’t touch the glass
Hey Sandi! I love hearing your thoughts and insight to supplies 😊 The strathmore mixed media is my favorite, I like the soft cover as you can crack the spine and get it really flat! I also love Princeton velvet tpuch brushes! It is intetesting though, I don't have any with a see through barrel 🤔
Yes, I meant to say that about the spine that it does lay flatter once you work it good
Sandi’s got muscles!!!!
😂
beautiful studio!
Thank you!
Oh I loved all of your art hauls Sandi! But the packaging (or lack of!) was very sloppy! Very annoying. If it were me I would send them back (or call the company?).
I love those books ❤ another three to add to my collection 😁😄 you are dangerous lol 😄 just kidding Sandi. I bought the Mary Fedden and David Hockney books you featured a while back. Love them both! So thank you Sandi 😊 I am still binge watching your previous vlog posts...always lovely always inspiring ❤
So glad you liked the previous books!!!
SUCH FUN!.... Just love the ART HAULS.... great book recommendations too!....
🤗🤗🤗
Add someone who is a retired military nurse as well as a retired professional vocalist, I can honestly advise you to put some raw unfiltered honey in that hot water when your throat is scratchy or irritated. It not only soothes the discomfort of the throat but it will also help to heal it and it offers antioxidant properties.
I’ve actually been doing that 🤗
Great inspirational video 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Thanks so much!
Always love your videos, Sandi! ❤
Thank you Samantha!
@@sandihester ♥️
"Lydia's Cat had Whiskers". LOVE it!! Also...dying to see a close up and review of that very cool horse (?) with wings and a crown painting that was behind you at the very end of the video. Sorry if I am seeing that wrong but it was super quick and when I tried to freeze the frame it was too blurry for me to see if clearly. But looks SO interesting.
I may have shown that one in my last video I paint every day
I think the Velvet Touch brushes come in 2 versions... The ones I use have a solid wood handle! ❤ Courtney
Thank-you Sandi for this excellent video. I am going to look for some of those paint brushes. 😊 Love your work ❤ Charlene from Vancouver Island BC Canada
Thank you so much!
Hi Sandi 😊 I love your videos, as always! ❤I've been using some super cheap watercolor brushes for years now, for watercolor, they are 'Grace Art 'watercolor brushes and they come in a pack of 12 for about $6 ... they are great. I'm not sure how they would hold up to acrylic but they might be good ... just thought I'd share this with you. I have no connection to Amazon, by the way. Thank you for always sharing bits of your life with us. 🥰
Thanks for sharing!!
Great to see you 👍😊⚘️🎨🎁
Thank you very much!
I've used the strathmore 500 sketchbook a few times and really enjoyed it, never tried that size though, I would love to but I think it would take me ages to fill the pages 😮
I love your channel. I just heard from you that you're going to my country! where about in Italy are you going? I am from the region on Tuscany
I love your art videos am a artist
Oh no a cliffhanger 😂 This was a great variety of delicious art stuff! I’ve only in recent years warmed up to abstract (when I found out there were abstracts I could relate to, not just the once i associate with corporate settings). I absolutely loved the second one you showed! Lovely feast of color behind you in your end shot, looking forward to hear more about them ☺️
I’ve been surprised how much people liked my abstracts. When I shared them on instagram people loved them too. Thank you!
@@sandihester That’s exciting!
Thank you! ❤
The dollar store sells a brush/water carrier that is excellent!
Awesome!
Great video as usual :) Could you please share a link for the water buckets? I would love to try them.
thanks Sandi, that was a great demo of different brush types. Have you ever been to Australia? I live here and always wonder how artists find the light compared to their homes.
I’ve not been there
As always, great video full of useful info. But did you say where you got the multi well water cups? I can't find it in the video description. Thanks again for sharing your wisdom and knowledge of art. I am truly inspired by your work.
I didn’t - I found them on amazon
Inside my dream studio...you tuber, Leslie Stroz
What is the brand of the 1.5 brush. So soft. Liked it
Sandi, your being naughty, not showing us that book 😂😂
Look forward to seeing it 😊
She showed us a good amount while she closed her eyes lol. A good indication whether you would like to buy it for yourself or not
I know but it will be worth the wait 🤗
Question ✋🏼how would it workout if I used Matte Medium to make my own block of paper??
It would work.
Loved this I want an Art Haul! Art Supplies Haul are my fantasy! Thanks, it’s cheeper for me to do it this way! Karen be Durmish, learner 39:50
Hey Sandi, are you coming to Italy, did you mention it? Will you make a little meeting with your fans in here? I would really like to meet you since I really like your art! ❤
I am coming there to do a retreat but unfortunately my time will be completely devoted to just the retreat time. But a meet up would have been fun!
@@sandihester okay, have fun! 💓🥰
Where was the water cup from? Thank you ❤
Amazon
For the stapler: you need one that can staple sideways (i.e. so the stapling part turns) then you can put it in the middle and it only needs to reach a third up the fold.
👍🏻
Can’t believe the way these goods were packaged. Hope you can find a different art supply store in future that cares more for its products.
Hi. What is the water bucket called and where did you get it please?❤
Wait, did you just use the same new brush in water color and then acrylic?! Can you do that?!
You sure can. I use the same brushes for watercolor, acrylic, oil and gouache
Water-based to water-based, so yes! You just have to be more careful in cleanup with the acrylic plasticizers. (But I would only use hog bristle or synthetic personally, no "fine furs" )
Dang! No link to where you got the buckets? :(
The Oil Painters Pocket Palette book you showed here is $182 u.s. on Amazon!?! just checked today 5/30/2024.
Yikes! I couldn’t put my watercolour brushes in acrylic. 😢
Can’t believe how shops just throw in their stuff in boxes without any protection. I am an Etsy seller myself, and the care i put in to wrapping my items is something else. Even books aren’t even protected by a piece of tissue paper.🙄
Hello Sandi.. you speak English and I translate the subtitles into Turkish to understand you Turkish... this does not happen in recent videos. I tried to fix it on the iPad. I also adjusted the settings but somehow translates
Hi Sandi, do you prefer to use watercolour paper for acrylics?
I have a list of my favorite papers on my website
Shame on Blick for their consistently sloppy packaging. Jackson's is the best. Anytime I can avoid Blick, I do.
Hi Sandi. Thanks for all your great videos over the years! how do you clean your brushes? what do you do with the waste water?
She uses a sink.
I have a video on here where I share how I clean them
i have to confess i have very little respect for the majority of abstract art nowadays. Pour paint art is atrocious to me and just splattering paint around is boring and pointless. child art.
it is the type of art that would be torn off wooden frames in a post apocalyptic world for fire wood without any thought lol. While the more respectable art would be treated a little more hesitantly. lol.
