      If I wanted to change the multifunction switches, do I have to remove all this trim with the clockspring?

    This is an excellent video contents helping me how to disassemble the air bag & steering column!
    My ultimate job is to replace my 2000 ML320 combination switch as my low beam head lights switch doesn't turn on the lights while high beam & turn signals work fine.
    Is the replacement doable ? I bought a brand new W163 combination switch - which looks pretty complicated - particular the little plastic part inside the steering pipe.
    Any video contents showing combination switch replacement ? Thanks so much for your help!

    • @L35inColorado
      @L35inColorado  2 роки тому

      By "combination switch", do you mean the lever with the headlight switch? If so, I haven't replaced that part before, but here is a link that might help you - scroll down to the PDFs on post #5, as those contain instructions:
      www.benzworld.org/threads/headlight-switch-replacement-99-m-class-w163.3072033/
      Did this just suddenly happen, or was it failing intermittently, as described in that post? And just to be sure - have you verified that the issue is not the headlight fuses?
      I hope this helps - good luck! : )

    • @chanl54

      @@L35inColorado - Yes, the switch block attached underneath the steering wheel. And thanks for the link - I found the exact service manual pages describing step by step R&I instructions including the clock spring contact. So many bolts and contacts to memorize for exact re-installation - I'm afraid losing a part (or bolt) to damage the steering and/or lighting systems.
      Oh, good point - haven't checked the fuse nor the bulb (which I replaced 2 years ago) - is there a separate fuse for lower beam light ? Will check that before starting this replacement job. Thanks so much for all the valuable info !
      Chan

    Der deutsche Airbag hat nur einen Stecker in der Mitte, den man nicht öffnen darf beim abklemmen, denn sonst geht dieser kaputt!!! Dieser Stecker muss einfach herausgehebelt werden.

      For any with a German ML, here's a Google translation of what the comment says:
      "The German airbag has only one plug in the middle, which you must not open when disconnecting, otherwise it will break!!! This plug simply has to be levered out."

    Fear the Clock Spring. I don't wanna know what happens if I move the Clock Spring.
    On some cars, you have to buy a new one and pull a retaining grenade pin when you install it.

    • @L35inColorado

      Ahaha -- It is so true! Respect the clock spring and everything will be okay, haha.

    • @L35inColorado
      @L35inColorado  4 роки тому +1

      @@fiatmortem5128 Yes, hah, I just posted that washer tank video. As for the steering rack -- I haven't done a steering rack on the W163, but it looks like one of those jobs which requires a lot of patience, and several jack stands, because you have to remove so many sub-components. From what I have heard, it can only fit out via the passenger's side, if that's any help. Good luck!

    • @fiatmortem5128
      @fiatmortem5128 4 роки тому +1

      @@L35inColorado Well, I looked it up, turns out you can recenter the clock spring. Put the airbag screws back in, turn it full CCW until it binds, then back 3 to 3.5 turns CW until the screw holes line up again.

    • @L35inColorado
      @L35inColorado  4 роки тому

      @@fiatmortem5128 Very cool, thank you. I have only reset Toyota clock springs, and then only the old ones that aren't linked to an steering angle sensor. That's what I'd be worried about with these fancy cars: all the command circuit that are tied into the steering angle sensors! Thank you posting the sequence

    • @L35inColorado
      @L35inColorado  3 роки тому

      Holy smokes, that's crazy! I'm sorry that's happening to you: have you tried heating it with a heat gun or hair dryer? There might be Loctite on the threads. Shield the wires, and try heating the bolt to weaken the Loctite. I hope that helps, and good luck!
