i never understood why they closed , they were still drawing decent crowds until the end.

Even if a promotion draws "decent crowds", it doesn't mean it's making money. Take ECW, when they closed they were still drawing good crowds and selling an acceptable amount of PPVs and merchandise, yet it still went bankrupt.
