    The "Ultimate Workbench" is a dream to have in the shop and after moving into my new shop I have decided to design and build a slightly smaller version better suited for the garage workshop. This Versatile Workbench is an absolute beast. Spanning a respectable 4' x 6' there is plenty of space to utilize as an outfeed table, assembly table, and even a router table!
    With all that you've come to expect from an "Ultimate" build this workbench has everything that you could ask for.
    - Dust Collection
    - Electrical System
    - Parts Organizer Bin Storage
    - Router Table
    - Deep Drawer Storage
    I also have a smaller version of this workbench design:
    "Shmedium" Workbench [3'x5']

      How have the casters held up? More specifically, the 2x4 they are attached to? You attached them to the cross pieces, which makes me think that the entire weight of the table is being held up by the pocket screws attaching the cross pieces. Please correct me if thats not the case. I really like this design, but want to understand that part.

    Incredible that you were able to find mostly straight 2x4s. I would have to go to my home store three different times at six month intervals just to be able to pick and choose ones that are that straight.

      I gave up. I now go to the good lumber store pay 60 Cents more for the "premium" grade. But I am simply in a better mood after ... :) Last visit to the orange store I had 12 rejects for every pick at that rate I had rearrange the entire pallet and was PO'ed

    As a retired design engineer, I love to view videos of other woodworkers' designs of benches, jigs, fixtures, etc. So far, what I've seen of your new bench, the design is both well conceived and easy to duplicate. I'm looking forward to viewing the follow-on videos to see how it all comes together.
    I'm thoroughly enjoying your video, you have a natural speaking style that makes the video easy to watch without sacrificing quality of content.
    Keep up the good work, Cheers ... Dave

      I was right there but the comments about the wheel strength then attatching to a single pocket screwed cross stud not the double glued and screwed legs was kinda giving me shivers... Definetly not going to get close to the rating that way .... Though probably not a real issue for the intended use ... Ah, the MDF will help still like pole barns hanging trusses off bolted in headers instead of on top of posts ... no likey the stress is all on the fasteners not the material

    Great info, fun to watch. I'm going to build this very soon. I've been in the woodworking business for 40 years and I learn something new everyday. Not sure if anyone else has mentioned it but in all the shops I've worked in and owned, wear gloves while using machinery is a no no . . . The glove can catch the blade that's turning and it will pull your hand into the blade. Keep up the great work!!

    Last workbench I built was made out of driftwood I found on the beach. The top is 4x8 by 6ft boards. I drilled 1/2 inch holes through 3 of them in 3 different places and the fourth one I threaded with a tap. I used all thread to hold them together and it turned out pretty nice. The frame and sides were 2x6. It looks like it is over a hundred years old.

    Well this will certainly inspire me to finally clean up my shop and get a real outfeed table going. I have been cleaning up 2x4's on my old jet 6" jointer the same way (1/16" passes) for finishing our basement ceiling so this should be a snap. I tossed a 35 degree bevel on them for a poor man's coffered look. Had to laugh at the dust mine is not much better. Got a new miter saw with close clearance so I can move that off to a side wall leaving room for a much improved setup .... Thx lots of good ideas in your video.

    Having just built my own combination saw-table/outfeed/assembly table albeit for my little DeWalt 7491, I think the ideal size for average 2-car garage weekend workshop is around 3x5 feet assuming a discrete table saw. Mine is closer to 3x6 because it also serves as a stand for my job saw.

    for the love of god get your self an aspiration system. it costs around 150$ and you wont have to deal with so much sawdust (not a vacuum cleaner) just for the jointer since you will be limited to 2.5 meters. get a good one and connect the whole workshop to it. 1 vacum cleaner to rule them all basically. 1000$ for it.
    i just started building my workshop and this thing saves me time cleaning it after i am done. i connected miter, table saw, router table, planer and jointer to it and it works via Arduino Bluetooth controller :)

    • @briantopping9894
      @briantopping9894 3 роки тому

      I've built a more mobile version (I like to cut nearest to my garage door but store the bench deeper into my "garage") and used a different attachment for the casters. Instead of the stretchers he has added for his casters, I doubled the bottom stretchers and mounted them on edge, so I have a 3" wide place the attach the casters; you will need to watch the total height of the bench, so you can still use it as an outfeed table (I used 2-1/2" locking casters with a high load-rating).

  • @coupleofcraigs7603
    @coupleofcraigs7603 3 роки тому +5

    So, I'll start with I love Shop Nation. I learn a ton, enjoy the video production and tinge of goofiness (because I'm that way myself). And I'm totally going to build a slightly different version of the Ultimate Workbench (most likely at a 6' by 3' size) due to the size of my work space.
    I wanted to say all that before I ask what might be considered a stupid or insulting question:
    Is it just me, or is the entire weight of this work bench resting on 8 pocket hole screws with glue? Wouldn't it be better to route a bit of a slot into the laminated frame to provide support from the frame against the cross pieces with the pocket holes? Maybe I'm missing something here (and would love to know, if so). It just seems like those laminated sides to the frame end up being all looks and then unhelpful in terms of support if all the weight ends up resting on those 8 pocket holes screes and glue. Maybe I'm under estimating how strong that joint is? Anyhow, I'd love help in my thinking there.
    Keep up the good work!

    • @imac6
      @imac6 3 роки тому

      That's what I thought too at first, but those panels on the side are bearing a lot of the weight as well

    • @jdef1
      @jdef1 3 роки тому

      The panels are not resting on the floor, so that weight still ends up bearing on the pocket holes. Yes, this design is pretty, but the caster location is flawed if there is no additional support added to the horizontal braces in the future. Those pocket hole screws are under shear loading as well, which is not what screws are meant to do.

    If you work with 4x8 sheets and want to break them down on your bench, you want it at least 6” smaller in both directions in case you need to clamp guides or jigs to the sheets while working with them.

  • @bfb3086
    @bfb3086 3 роки тому

    Best to predrill the 2x4 laminations if you are not clamping them. A tapered bit predilled would allow the superficial piece to be drawn against the deeper piece and make a tighter lamination. Also, you did not apply any meaningful force when you did drive the screws. Even stepping on the 2x4 at the location for each screw would have been helpful. Without predrilling or having clamping pressure, the tip of the screw has a tendency to push out the deeper piece of wood to create a void.
    That being said, I like the design. I am planning on building something similar, but will probably use plywood laminations for the legs and stretchers. Keep up the great work. Subscribed!

  • @levijboyd
    @levijboyd 3 роки тому

    That was brutal watching you use your jointer. Those smaller ones don’t push the dust out so you need good dust collection and it looks like you have sawdust caught in the cabinet of it causing it to come out the top.

    This is awesome. Is there a reason you chose to mount the end walls recessed several inches as opposed to flush with the frame posts?

    Framing adds a lot of weight, and steals a lot of internal space. Do the sums, and sheet only construction is strong beyond any possible need. Cheaper, quicker, lighter, more storage- WNTL?

    I'm wondering what is your main profession since this is only a side gig? You are rocking it, and also how did you learn to do all this?

    I'm curious as to how big your current shop is. I'm still figuring out "what" tools I can get for the new space I have and if I'm going to have to scale down anything. My current space is just over 850 sq feet.

    Awesome bench. How tall is it? I’ve seen a ton of different heights depending on the work, depending on the height of the person’s elbow??

    I cannot find the plans for the smaller, simpler table. Where would I find it? Thank you.

    How easy or quick are those casters to raise and lower? Have you done a plan making vid? I can draw up models all day but getting from that to usable plans is where things get muddled for me.

    I’m still trying to figure out how and/or why your still don’t have a tablesaw? Are you only using a track saw?
