Worlds Largest Cuckoo Clock - Sugarcreek Ohio

- Seated in Amish Country ("Little Switzerland") - A restaurant named Alpine Alpa was built near Winesburg, Ohio by Hans and Alice Grossniklaus in 1935. He was a Swiss Cheesemaker. They decided to add attractions to their restaurant to increase the draw of local tourism. In 1972 they decided to have a cuckoo clock constructed.. Measuring 23 feet, 6 inches tall, 24 feet wide and 13 feet, 6 inches deep it's been called the World's Largest Cuckoo Clock and is listed in the Guiness Book of World Records.
In August of 2007 the non-functioning clock was moved from the hill behind the restaurant to a new ground level location. It was also given a makeover courtesy of Hampton Hotels Save A Landmark Program. In 2009 it was auctioned off. Mark Coblentz of Walnut Creek Cheese notoriety. Coblentz purchased the clock in hopes to keep the clock in the area. Sugarcreek businessman Lavon Daugherty approached Coblentz with the idea of moving the cuckoo to Sugarcreek as an icon of the local Swiss culture.
I am from Hong Kong, I remember when I made my first visit in US, I stopped by Sugarcreek and saw this big cuckoo clock on the way to the inn. It is awesome!!

We went to millers for ammo and went out to the range for the day, but we always needed to stop by the clock lol

It's still a neat clock! I mean does it really matter in the end how many chimes or "cuckoo" it does? Oh well, not to me. Just enjoying the video and amazing clock!

Sorry this is not the worlds largest clock! The world largest is in the heart of the black forest in Triburg Germany which i just came from last week , but for the united states i would say this to be the second largest clock in the world and it is very nice , the largest clock is 3 stories high and is the face of house of 1000 clocks in Triburg!

not sure Glennmann cause they don't use the length or the height from the building. they measure the height and length and weight of the clock mechanism not the building. thats why the second biggest cuckoo clock what is not a big building but the clock self is very big also stays by Triberg (between Triberg and Schönach.)
if they just measure the building then i don't know which cuckoo clock is the biggest cause i saw a lot of great buildings with cuckoo clocks inside. like Hinterzarten. height is not much but the total lenght of the building is 150m i guess? (same as by Triberg).+ Hinterzarten have also floors underground. where a restaurant is.

@@carmenvitale855 it depends on what you call a real cuckoo clock, if im not wrong than this one ist just a building that looks like a cuckoo clock but the inner workings and mechanics are actually just a motor powered machine. while the one in triberg Germany is actually designed and build like the traditional cuckoo clocks which are not powered by a motor but through gravitational pull from the weights.
@@TheKilaby I actually visited the one in Germany and I can confirm that it is driven by weights and has internal clockworks!
@@TheKilaby About thirty plus years ago I was stationed in Germany and went down to Triberg. I saw several large clocks that day and as you said, they are powered by traditional means. I brought back a few and over the years have accumulated many more.

From the fact there is a whole band it is obvious it is electronic. There is no way the sounds of an entire band could be produced using mechanical sound making devices.
