This was amazing. What a super useful demystifying of physical modeling. I am really enjoying this series!

You've made the most detailed and helpful PM explainers that I've found on youtube so far. Dig that they're in Surge! The erhu patch is sick. I'd be very interested to see you build a khaen or any bamboo "mouth organ". A dan bao would also be very cool. Cheers!

Thank you :) I will give it a try and if I get any interesting results they will probably show up in a future video.

surge is amazing, but it's really easy to get lost with what settings I've made, especially with the modulation routing. I got lost while following you after i cross faded the filter away from the comb, to hear the noise. I had to rewatch the video to remember how to get the karplus again hehe. the pan law on that fader is a little esoteric too. cross faders on filters is not a super common control in my other synths. Overall the controls are super sensitive, which is better than controls that do nothing, but it's real easy to get into an unstable state if you know what i mean, just a hair of a change on a slider can drastically change things.. They're working on an interface overhaul but it's a big job. nice folks over at the Surge Team. Much to say about this synth.

The filter mix is a bit mysterious to me, too, and not just in Surge. A straightforward crossfade between serial filters is not always the most useful thing so I think sometimes synthmakers will add some complexity to how it works. I'm not sure that's the case here but I do sometimes have unexpected results.
The instability you describe can be frustrating, but it's also a sign you're working with a real synthesizer and not a toy.
Thank you for the watch and the comment :)
