Thanks for the video! I would suggest taking the oil fill cap off BEFORE you drain it however, this will ensure that a vacuum is not created inside the crank case which will cause some of the old oil to stay trapped in there. Also, there is that rare occasion when you have already drained the oil, but can't get the cap off...then you are screwed! Had this happen before!
Ever hear of a PCV valve? Positive Crankcase Ventilation? At any rate there will not be a vacuum created. I'm not saying it will or will not make a difference but if it makes a difference, it will be negligible. Still, if I was making a video, I would try to remember to do this just to avoid these kind of comments.
@@fixfalcon2628 How much faster? Have you timed it? Have you ever drained the oil until it was just dripping and then put a clean drain pan under the oil pan and THEN took off the fill cap to see if more oil came out and how much? I'm thinking that I might have to try that sometime.
Thanks for the video. I don't know how much of that plastic under the engine I would have taken off before I found the drain and filter. I just did my daughter's 2018 model and Mazda has replaced the 8mm Allen bold with a regular 17mm hex head. I also put 5 quarts in it and it was not yet full so I added a bit more from another jug I had. This little four banger takes as much oil as our big old V-8 engines used to.
Another little tip is to have previously run the engine to warm up the oil, its makes the oil less viscous. (Its rare I get to use that word!) Also take the filter off before replacing the drain plug to prevent air locks.
@@themechanic6117 Nic, that is an award winning how-to video. Thanks. ( Re. convenience: I also maintain a 2014 Toyota Tacoma; Don't need to jack the truck up (and no cover of course), it has the oil filter on top of the engine sitting in a metal "cup" that a tube attaches to and catches any remaining oil from filter after draining. Now that is convenience!
The manual recommends Castrol or Mazda oil - and normal driving conditions could allow oil changes every 10,000 miles or every 12 months. Set the maintenance to "flexible" and could wait to change oil reminder comes on. Thanks for the note about replacing the metal washer. I have been having a oil change place do the work (for $60 without coupon) and after 1,000 miles the car started slow oil leak. I brought the car back to them and they said everything was tight. They recommended that I needed to replace the oil pan gasket. That I should bring back to dealership for warranty. However my car already had 62,000 miles (2,000 miles over the warranty). So I called around told mechanics I needed new gasket and they indicated it would likely be 1/2 a day and over $250.00. I investigated and replace the oil myself. I picked up a new plug with a rubber washer for just $4. The new plug is removed by the typical 13 mm wrench and not the unique 8 mm allen (or hex key) wrench.
lol, dang it. Watched this, went out and got an 8mm allen... popped the cover off and found out the plug was replaced by dealer to be a “normal” bolt head. Sigh. So fun fact, if anyone has not done it themselves yet, check before you waste the couple bucks on an allen socket you’ll never use. My 2018 2.5L calls for 4.8 liters. Bottle says 4.73... might get a quart just to have on hand, just to top off a 0.07 liter bit. But probably won’t. Was close to but still about 4mm above bottom hole on dip. Just feedback for anyone newbs with 2018 CX5 2.5L. Pretty easy. If nothing else, saves A LOT of time.
The drain is at the rear of the pan. If anything it allows "extra drainage" . You do know that when you change your oil you don't get all the oil out right?
wow, a mazda oil filter and it's gasket fell off? wow and people talk smack about fram filters doing this. i always change my oil at 5K, and i've never seen the oil filter gasket stay stuck, and i've always used fram filters. anyway, thanks for the vid! (owner of 2016.5 cx-5 and 2012 nissan altima)
I think it depends on what oil filter you use. I usually use the new version Mobil-1 oil filter which has the PN ending with A, and it should be good for up to 20K miles interval. The old version of Mobil-1 oil filter (no ending with A) is good for 15K miles.
Don't listen to that marketing crap. DO NOT go 10k or 12 months on oil . I change my synthetic oil every 5k miles. If you use conventional oil change it every 3k
Ok I actually watched this video just to see how you got the plastic tabs back into the cover. You did this very fast and it went straight in for you,,,,,,, but it is almost near impossible for me to get this back in…… why could they not just use three 8mm bolts… seriously!
Perhaps instead of a bunch of !!! a description of the "right" way would be more helpful. Plus it would really show the guy thats just trying to help people out what a clueless man he is.

Removing the cap makes almost no difference. You're not really saving time by doing it.
Excellent video. Straight and to the point. Everything you need to know in a well filmed and narrated video. Good job and thanks!
Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching 👍
Excellent video. Really good to see someone priming the new filter first. You truly are a professional.
That was an excellent video. Really appreciate the safety pointers, too.
No problem, thanks for watching 👍
Outstanding video. Short and to-the-point with all of the important information. Thanks.

Thankyou just completed my oil change. Great video..

That interesting, a bolt head is better than the Allen. It is a lot of oil . My Nissan with a 1.8L takes 3 qts of oil 😂.Thanks for watching
Hi there! You can find all this stuff in Mazda CX 5 online manual.
Another little tip is to have previously run the engine to warm up the oil, its makes the oil less viscous. (Its rare I get to use that word!)
Also take the filter off before replacing the drain plug to prevent air locks.
You need to get the vehicle off the ramps (and onto level ground) before checking your oil level sir, otherwise you'll get a false reading.
That's why I check the oil again when it's off the ramps...that simple
Nice video. I like how you properly torqued the bolt. I always take the oil cap off while it drains.
That was a handy access to the oil filter and the drain plug. Right next to each other too.
+wyattoneable I was thinking the same thing.doesnt get more convenient than that !

Thank you! No more 93 dollar oil changes from the dealer lol 😂
Yeah thats a lot of money
$93? that would be nice $360 AUD for just oil and filter
Thats crazy
They wanted to charge me 150
$59.99 from mazda dealer in NY
Really helpful video!! Thanks so much for you help!!
You're welcome, thanks for watching
For the SkyActiv 2.5L engine
4.5 quarts without changing the filter
4.8 quarts with changing the filter.
Great video mate some fantastic tips in there will certainly help people out

Add 4 quarts and set the car on level ground before adding more to avoid false readings
If I might add, you need to open the oil cap when draining the oil, other that great video.
You can open the oil cap if you choose but you don't NEED to .
Funny guy. It was enjoyable watching your video and i learned what to do for an oil change on a cx5. You even made the wife laugh.
Thank you for watching
so you drained oil with car front end raised up? Doesnt that not allow for proper drainage?
The drain is at the rear of the pan. If anything it allows "extra drainage" . You do know that when you change your oil you don't get all the oil out right?
What to use to keep leather seats from drying and cracking? Thanks 🌟

Nothing wrong with it. I always recommend full synthetic oil

please do one on how to remove the hood cable from the inside of the car. no videos on it ..
These cars arent that old .how is your hood cable broken?
Do I need to replace the oil filter every time I replace the engine oil ?
Yes you do

Don't give into that advertising crap. Buy a new filter with every oil change...
Depends on your filter and how long you go between changes. I change my oil every 5,000 miles and I use a K&N or OEM Toyota filter.
The filling of the bottle at the end... was that actual footage or some kind of effect / trick? Looked cool.
+Thomas EXOVCDS actual footage. As I was pouring the oil i made the video pan from bottom to top to follow the oil.

I had to add half quart more because the light came on after using it for a while.
i thought full synthetic oil change was 10,000 miles or every 12 months ???? please respond..

What is that tool called the one to remove the oil bolt
I believe its a hex
Also why do you only use the blue stp
I just use whatever is on sale in the auto parts store
@@themechanic6117 that makes sense. Thank you.
Is this cx5 a 2016 model? (Just wondering as my cx5 2015 doesn't have that menu screen)
Yes its a 2016
I have a 2013 with 111000 millage. I should use 0W-20 ? Or 5W-20 what is the difference
Use what the owners manual recommends
What car ramp are these
From autozone
Could you also explain why you use the blue oil filter?
Is this the FWD or AWD version?
I'm not 100% sure but I think it's the FWD model
What specific motor oil did you use? Also how much?
chase blankenship 0w-20 ,I believe it took 5 qts... I think I show it in the video...
Lol "if you have mickey mouse hands"
Mission complete after watching your video. Sorry Jiffy Lube, but i think i'll keep my $70.
Avoid those quick oil change places. Feels good to save money 👍
car has to be on level surface before you check the oil dipstick. you will not get the correct reading while car is on ramps.
Thats why you lower the car onto the ground then check the dipstick...

That drain plug is a pain in the ass!
Yes it is, I tossed it out and replaced it with a regular drain plug.
Wow they copied VW with all the underamour :) nice done buddy.
+STEVE ROB REVIEWS that's the auto industry. Lol
Maybe VW copied them?🤔
Good instructions, but STP oil filter ! No way
To each their own. At least it's not a Fram 😁
You mention that you torque down the drain plug when you reinstall the plug, but you fail to mention the torque specs.
Terry Kinch watch the video again, the torque spec is on the screen. Clear as day
"spark plug tight"
