the women in the video surely arent that old right? theyre just trying to rewrite history in order to fit their victim mentality, wich is a shame because in reality they could talk about real issues like how a lot of dark skinned people still have traumas left over from slavery that are just so rooted in their family its hard to get rid of. now that would be a story,, this on the other hand? this is just false information...

I loved the Bratz dolls because they actually looked like me and people in my family (albeit exaggerated versions). I had Yasmin. As a kid I loved that they had curves, big eyes and big lips. This is what I saw in a lot of my aunts and this is what I now see in my adult self.

I think that Barbie and Bratz for their initial start had things they both succeeded in and where they had or are continuing to improve in. Like while Bratz started off the gate with diversity (albeit with all the dolls looking the same like their molds, exaggerated and inhuman which is kind of apart of its charm). When it comes to values they are more so fashion teen doll characters having fun. Meanwhile Barbie was very much early on seen more of a "role model" like yes she was into fashion but she was also a career girl: any career she had you name it.
And Barbie did try with diversity with the first black doll coming out in 1967. But there were kind of side kicks not main characters unless you count the black versions of Barbie. Also in the 80s - 00s there were dolls of the world collection. And now we still have cultural dolls being made. A few decades later we have improved on giving diverse Barbies in ethnicity and skin tone equal shine. Heck there's a whole movie about Barbie finding another Barbie except this one is black and lives in Brooklyn, NYC. So she has come a long way.
Bratz has come back and they are very much the same (they questionably gave Kylie Jenner a doll) but they are still fashionistas. But idk who they want to promote to seems their like older fan base that grew up with them, with some of their content online.

I remember when I brought my daughter to the store to buy Barbie sheets for her bed, she chose the ones with a Black Barbie on them. A woman behind me looked in my cart and told me that my kid picked the wrong ones. (We're white) I just told her we'd picked what my kid wants and we walked away. My poor girl was so confused. I'm still mad to this day. (It's been 20 years LOL)

Good for your girl! The chance surface color of a person's skin is sure a ridiculous thing to divide us, but our species is so adept at being divisive and clannish! The true measure of a person has nothing to do with color or appearance! Personally I think black girls were actually fortunate there was no black Barbie to compare, twist, and distort their developing identities. As a chubby tomboy preteen, I hated Barbie and what she stood for! LOL

So I learnt from this documentary that the release of Black Barbie didn't satisfy the Black community, because her hair was too short (natural style), and her dress wasn't showy enough (it was elegant, not a ball gown), and it must've been white creators being mean. But then they were told it was actually a Black lady designer who created the look, and the community went "Oh, okay then, never mind" 😅

I’m just a little disappointed that they act like Christie was nothing just because she didn’t go by the “Barbie” name. I literally saw an interview with either the writer or director of this documentary where she said “Christie was like being invited to the table but only offered crumbs” not to mention the Shindana toy company who had their own black Barbie-esque career girl doll “Wanda” who debuted in 1972, 8 years before black Barbie.

Dude shut up. It's not about wanting what white people have, it's about representation. These women who recount growing up without a choice aren't saying they wouldn't support a black owned doll business or line. This is the reality of our history.
Instead of appreciating how black women can come together and talk about these issues, you'd rather berate them for an entirely different issue. How about your ass gets up and make a doll line for black women?
Oh wait. You won't. Because you don't gaf about this conversation you're just here to cry on the behalf of white people.
Looks like it took white people to give black women a platform to speak on, cause where are the black men who are supposed to be building black America? Oh yeah, they're supporting the system.

As a hispanic girl i never had an issue in skin in Barbie. I was aware that colour variety and versions of me where limited editions but the stories i created at play i new represented me and what i wanted. I started playing with my mom's 80s Barbies there was no colour in her collection due to lack of resource and cost. Living in south America at the time my reality exposed me to culture and skin colour variety. Came to Canada when i was 5 my parents never bought me dolls according to colour rather the dolls i got was based on detail, clothing, extra accessories, careers so i could grow my stories and have accessories to make the stories more real. The colour was just luck either the store had it or they didn't. Although now i have black, white barbies. It is not easy to find a latina barbie with a more indigenious look and natural hair colour. It doesn't bother me cause women suffer within the household or job or place of birth in that we are equal. You hear it when you talk to woman of different colours who have led different paths in life. No amount of Barbie variety will change that. That change comes from activisim from home, workplace, everyday life. That is how i have come to think of it

Black people matter as much as any other race, i get that. I’m not racist at all, but sometimes they go overboard. like Disney for example, can we talk about how they changed the little mermaid with a black girl in the live action movie. It was my sister’s favourite princess growing up cause she looked just like her. Like bro just make another original black princess if you don’t think there are enough. Ariel was important too cause a lot of people were also racist towards red heads. They literally thought they were cursed witches that needed to be eliminated lmao💀 not trying to complain here but i mean keeping the red head princess’s are just as important as the black ones.

Why is the film ruined just because a fictional character doesn't look like your sister? And doesn't that just prove the point that, for decades black and brown girls did not have any princesses that looked like them until Mulan and Pocahontas, and somehow they had to manage. By all means, there should be original IPs with black girls as the main cast that appeal to everyone, rather than just race-switching already existing IPs, but given that these are fictional characters in fictional places, it's kind of strange to argue the occasional switching from the original content represents some massive injustice. I mean, we did this with Cinderella in the 90s, and nobody seemingly had that much of a problem.

No excuses. Black people live in America too. If you had done some research, you should know that there were very few and far between black Barbie dolls throughout the years. It’s funny that whenever Netflix releases any project and it’s not about race y’all eat it up, but the comment it’s about race y’all foam at the mouth and behave as if everything they release is about blackness lol it’s very indicative of fragility honestly. you mean this is Netflix’s version of a Black Barbie? 💀

I don't get it. As a kid I identified with anybody doing something cool. Young, old, black, white, female, male, fat, skinny - it didn't matter. It was the "cool" I identified with.

KITTY BLACK PERKINS remember her name. She's a legend. In 1980 she designed the first black Barbie which is the one with the afro and red dress.
I know a certain demographic would think this documentary is "wOkE" but these conversations have been had for almost a century. A psychologist in 1947 did a doll test and found overwhelmingly more black kids preferred white dolls because they thought they were more beautiful than black ones. Anyone with half a brain cell would know why thats a problem but in case I need to say it this test was profound because it speaks to the psyche of these children. It will also lead to inferiority complexes, low self-esteem and overall negative self image.
Representation is so important so in 1968 a little toy company Shindana created black dolls for kids to see themselves. They also created Chinese and Native American dolls doen the line. They did what needed to be done and their legacy will be cemented in the toy industry 💯

And keep in mind that “woke” was actually a positive term as it meant you were intelligent and socially conscious so there’s nothing actually wrong w being “woke.” insufferable fragile yt ppl changed the definition of “woke” to give it a negative connotation lmao so it’s funny how it’s now perceived. Thank you for this educated response! You were absolutely right in how a lack of positive representation can create inferiority complex, low self esteem and negative self image and inferiority complex is smthing even i’ve had to battle being caramel-complected WITH positive tv representation and I was born in 97! The media programming that “yt is right” is very strong and pervasive.

@@SupernaturalLove100 oh yeah representation is VERY important I was born in 99 I grew up in the 00s seeing Dijonay, numbuh 5, Cindy, and Leshawna. They were either angry, stoic or boy crazy.🥴
These conservatives co opted the term so now having a black kid in a TV show, a doll with vitiligo or a t shirt with a wheelchair kid on it now it's "wOkE" 🙄

@lauren6509 if you make something because you want xyz child to enjoy it, great. If you make it for social points, to push an agenda, &/or to make another dollar you are 'woke'. It's no longer about the kids it's about you.

As A black girl who loves dolls, this is a little silly to me. Barbie isn't the end-all-be-all for dolls. Black dolls existed way before Barbie. And the idea that black people can't relate to something that is inherently "white" is silly, also they are hyping up the first black Barbie, but she was literally called "colored" Barbie... To conclude the first black Barbie was nothing special and only represented the style and "dynamite" of black AMERICANS. This is not the big thing Netflix is hyping it up to be. Thanks for coming to my Ted -Talk

I don't think you understood what you watched here. No one stated Barbie was the end-all be all for dolls nor did anyone claim sum'n inherently "🤍" wasn't relatable. They just stated havin' a Black Barbie was relatable. This is about the first time Barbie wasn't just another friend she was Black Barbie. It might not be a big deal to YOU but it meant a lot to plenty of other Black girls.

There were some misspoken “facts” in your Ted Talk. The documentary is precise for people like you, the ones so above it all, that deem it silly with half facts. Hopefully
You watch it and learn something. True ignorance is when you believe that a certain person or thing can’t teach you anything.

nope it doesn't follow the narrative that barbie is racist... This is everything on netflix now full of false narratives. Them and disney went to woke for me. I can deal with it if they don't make up fake information but once they lie it just comes off as pure cringe. if they don't want to explain the real history behind barbie and have woman cry they couldn''t find a black barbie it is pointless to watch.
