I am fortunate that I am a product of my parent's love for classic Hollywood film. I don't know if the film industry today can ever recreate a marvelous romantic script like this. I have seen many films w/Van Johnson but this was the first time I thought of him as a romantic "lead/sexy guy" from 1949 no less.
Van had so much fun with Judy on this film. Mr Mayer was happy, she finished this film ahead of schedule saving the studio a ton of money. He credited Van for that and how did he accomplish it? Van said , you just be nice and I callled her beautiful everyday. He also played pranks on her. They got along really well. This is my fave Judy movie cause of the chemistry between them. 😊
One of my favorite movies of hers too. She displays in the brief scene amazing acting skills here which some reviewers had all-along noted but such had skipped over some because of the musical context of her movies. I think it was Bosley Crowther in his NY Times review of "A Star is Born" who noted something like "...an expert vaudeville performance was to have been expected of Judy, but to find her a dramatic actress is the real surprise... but perhaps it shouldn't be."
Thank you for posting this movie (it’s supposedly a take off of the movie, ‘The Shop Around The Corner’, I DO see the similarities, but like this one MUCH BETTER). Just and Van’s “chemistry” was awesome to see. Great movie!
One of my favorite Van Johnson movies. Too bad that Hollywood relegated him to the second tier of great male leads. This movie and "Miracle in the Rain" are my two favorite Van Johnson movies. Both romances and both wonderfully acted.
LOVE this film and just saw it for the 1st time this past Christmas day....that ending couldn't be more perfect...I never thought of Van Johnson as a hot leading man but after seeing this I feel I've been so wrong...lol....great chemistry with him and Judy.
"Psychologically I'm very confused, but personally I feel just wonderful". Prefect Hollywood ending! The little girl was Liza Minnelli.
