  • Patrick "Pecker" Dunne (born April 1, 1933, Castlebar, County Mayo, Ireland) is an Irish musician. He was born in his parents' horse-drawn caravan. His family were Irish Travellers originally from County Wexford, where his father was a fiddle player.[1] In Parley-poet and Chancer, an autobiography transcribed by Micheál Ó hAodha (page 21), he states he lived on New Street Crumlin and Galtymore Road. Drimnagh was considered part of an area known as North Crumlin until the introduction of the postal code system during the mid-1970s. The older residents still remember the family living there. He is one of Ireland's most noted banjo players (also proficient with fiddle, melodeon and guitar),and is among an elite of Traveller musicians that includes The Fureys
Dunne became known to a wide Irish audience from his regular busking at GAA sporting fixtures, particularly in Munster. Later he played in England, France, Australia and New York, where he appeared with The Dubliners. He also performed alongside Richard Harris and Stephen Rea in the 1996 feature film Trojan Eddie.
He now lives in Killimer, County Clare with his wife and four children, who continue the musical tradition.

The word "authentic" is much overused, but Pecker truly is. What wonderful music! Terrific character.

I hadn’t sung folk ballads in over a decade and the memorized lyrics were slowly slipping. Then in spec I picked up his Best of CD at a music festival in. Colorado, After the opening blast of that incredible voice I was back in my native Scotland . I’ll warm up my voice everyday with portlaoise jail or last of the traveling people. He was the real deal in every sense of the word.
From Belfast to Wexford from Clare to Tralee a town with a pub is a living for me, I haven’t a home but by God I am free, I’m the last of the traveling people.
Magician with words. A true legend. R.I.P The Pecker Dunne.

There is no equivalent of this man to take his place if he leaves us. A stunning individualism and pure delivery, which make him a national Irish treasure alongside the Tara broach. I love his songs. I loved seeing him playing tunes before the big matches. Thanks Pecker.

The likes of Pecker doesn't come around very often. . It's a kind of a soul that can't be taught. . It's something that comes from deep within. . And so, for me, The Pecker Dunne was one of a kind. .. God Bless

I remember back in the '80s, my band played in a concert in Skibbereen and "backed" the Pecker who was a special guest -we were young guys but we were country lads and knew all his material - he was a legend back then. He was very down to earth and friendly -a sound character.

The comments by Michael at the start of the video aren't entirely true, Pecker Dunne wasn't a Show person he was an Irish Traveller his mother may have been a show person as he said, but that doesn't make him one, This video at the time was clearly to get the settled community to accept Pecker as their own and not to associate him with the rest of the "itenerants" , as for him having Romany blood well that would make sense if his mother worked in a circus but you would have to hold that story with a pinch of salt, Rest in peace Pecker Dunne
