Public Service Broadcasting - Sputnik

- October 4th 1957 marked the start of the space age, when the Soviet Union successfully launched Sputnik I. The Lovell Telescope at Jodrell Bank Observatory was the largest radio telescope in the world and the only device that could track Sputnik’s carrier rocket.
The Lovell Telescope picked up Sputnik on 11 October 1957 - on the anniversary of that date in 2015, Public Service Broadcasting filmed the video for ‘Sputnik’ in front of the iconic structure.
The video celebrates the launch of the first satellite into earth orbit and highlight The Lovell Telescope’s role in making space exploration history.
The ‘Sputnik/Korolev’ EP will be released on 12” vinyl, CD & digital on 20 Novemberalong with 4 stellar remixes from Blond:ish, Petar Dundov, Eagles & Butterflies & Plugger.

Greetings to all Cosmonauts out there
Still the most impactful crescendo ive ever heard.
"As the earth shrinks, the universe stretches forth its beckoning hands, in a gesture for all of mankind"
Nothing beats it, and I'd be surprised if anything ever does.
Fly save, dear cosmonauts! We know how you feel. We are in this together. Stay strong.
This is a really nice comment. You never know what you might mention in passing that really means something to someone else. Thank you.
Get ready with Ollie

I can't stop coming back to watch this. Absolutely perfect.
Amazing song and the video is SPOT ON! The whole song is on a crescendo that really gives the feeling of the "beginning of a new era for mankind", and the use of the "blip" of the Sputnik as part of the rythm is brilliant
Spot on, totally agree, the crescendo effect is so intense it sends shivers down my spine, I love it, makes me feel alive, like anything is possible! Also the Voice of The Russian Moon running throughout at the same pitch and volume, then when the crescendo drops and all you hear is Sputnik, exactly like it would have been in the vacuum of space. One of my favourite tracks of theirs, alongside Everest and I'd say The Pit.
Had the extreme pleasure in seeing these guys in Norwich last week, if you're a fan then I absolutely urge you to see and hear them live. They're beyond incredible.
My grandfather helped design the Lovell telescope! Grew up visiting jodrell :)
@Max M I live near to it and remember it being built. Have driven past it numerous times yet oddly never visited! Must go on a tour round it sometime. I'm 70 now and it was built when I was 16!!
My Mum was a student at Manchester University when Sputnik was launched
saw them live once...they sound amazing live...and what a build-up. The pinnacle of human acheivement - travelling beyond the bounds of skies, captured beautifully in here. Thank you PSB
Brady sent me here.
Well worth the time!
You and I both, fellow HI listener.
Me three.
The last time I got this excited about a group was the first time I heard pink floyd and that was a long time ago. Just absolutely loving them
Happy 60th Sputnik's day everyone!
Just wow - really makes me have some faith with bands creating new and innovative music. Stupendous work - more please
I'm a bit late to the game here, a recent discovery, what a discovery. This band are pure, and utter genius, I love em. This tune is wonderful, nice soothing start, with a proper kick up the bum build up, those cymbal crashes are heaven. Then off it fades, waiting to be played again.
If you liked this, wait until you see them live! They're brilliant. In the meantime try their Proms concert
I can't stop coming back to watch this. Absolutely perfect. ,and again and again ........ super
Not sure why, but I find this very powerful and emotional. Great piece!
The build-up at 2:05 is always my favorite.
I loved PSB long before Abigail turned her followers onto them, but man, I'm sure glad she did. This band needs to be heard.
Was brought here by hello internet, I was ecstatic when abigail used PSB in a video
Who’s Abigail?
Yea..... Who's Abagail? I am in Seattle. I heard it on KEXP first.
@@theasparagus1769
"abigail" refers to Abigail Thorn of Philosophy Tube, she recommended this song on her tumblr.
@@sydssolanumsamsys ah her she’s sick. I do follow her on Tumblr I just hardly ever look at tumblr.
Watched this countless times, ajd listened to it countless more. Just get goosebumps at the end that beat, visuals and Sputnik charging through space, just simply amazing
Very well done with the telescope that picked up Sputnik in the background - superb
take some kraftwerk splash on a little daft punk and some bbc sound effect vinyls, lovely stuff :)
Hot damned - I keep coming back to this track.
We're all in this together, cosmonauts
Russian here wants to thank you for this amazing video and music. Very atmospheric. Gagarin video is amazing too. Keep up the good work guys!
Love the setting of this, not only is the song good, the animation overlaid on the Lovell space telescope is brilliant
Finally, my favourite song in this album gets a music video. I like this song very much, especially the beep; it's really well-done.
Can someone tell me why there are so many dislikes for this? i seriously don't get it. Please explain. I mean this stuff is fucking brilliant?
+emiayAquilani the only two reason I can think of off top of my head is 1) the beat and rhythm is seen as a departure from their normal stuff, and 2) anti-Russian sentiment
LoricSwift thanks for this. I just recently in love with PSB thanks to 'the other side'. Wondering now how they sounded before.
I reckon it's because it's been shortened from the actual song so missed out some of the best bits but love this song sooooo much
They are biting Kraftwerk pretty heavy
Dreams Undesired not at all. Same synths but totally different style.
Stunning, I have goosebumps!
You mean willgoosebumps.
+Bob Henry Ayy lmao
СПУТНИК! Fantastic.
Happy birthday, space age.
This video captures what it is to see them live. Mesmerising.
Fantastic show from PSB at Rock City, Nottingham last night - keep producing more of your unique material guys, it sounded (and looked) brilliant.

😶🌫😶🌫
thanks olly this is pretty good
that's so real of you
Which scumbags dared to give this wonderful piece of music a thumbs down?
Heard the heavens fill with shouting, and there rain'd a ghastly dew, from the nation's airy navies grappling in the central blue...
When i do homework i play this song on loop
Thanks Olly~
It took me way too long to realize that the projection was on an actual radio telescope 😅 That's pretty mad, love it :D
What a band of fantastic musicians with a point to say in music of historical.events and progression Very OMD for the 21st century Just discovered this band on the BBCs Biggest weekend
Happy Birthday to Sputnik. Still alive in deep space as those signals just didn't come to us down here, think about it.
Incorrect, it reentered Earth's atmosphere after three months in orbit, and it disintegrated into smithereens.
malwill54 are you stupid. it rented the atmosphere you idiotic moron
He is wrong, but that is no reason to be a douche
Sputnik did re-enter, but its signals are still travelling away from earth... by these we will be found....
yeah.. guys hes talking about the signal propagating through space... it will go for ever, just get weaker with distance...
Happy Space Week!
What an awesome video! I love the use of The Lovell Telescope as a backdrop.

the beginning reminds me of M|A|R|R|S "Pump Up the Volume"
Love It - Sputnik , fellow traveller roughly translated :)
I really don't want to beg but please come back to Ramsbottom next year. I missed you last time, never again.
Yassssss!!!!
Looking forward to Brixton.
"--stretching forth a beckoning hand to all mankind!" -- Well, nice enough idea. Too bad we've slapped aside that hand. Yes, yes; I know we're heading to Moon/Mars. But we were on a "fast track" to getting there 40 years ago. Now we're dependent on the Russians to get to the ISS (which I object to purely on post-Cold-War impulse and has nothing to do with the dedicated scientists, engineers and cosmonauts in Star City) and we're in a "space race" with China-- *that's* how long we waited.
Hooray for Jodrell Bank-- still hard at work all these years.
Were did the action footage of Sputnik come from? Done for this vid? Very nice.
