George Lucas FULLY Explains Jedi and Sith History BIG VIDEO

- Опубліковано 28 тра 2021
- What a treat this is. I'm so thankful for Paul Duncan's book The Star Wars Archives 1999-2005. It has so many interviews and exclusive things with George Lucas that reveals things I never knew about. It's always a fun time reading from this book because you never know what you find in each new page.
I feel it's necessary for us to understand what George Lucas thought of the Sith and Jedi

I love how Samuel L Jackson wanted purple, and Lucas builds a whole lore around the colour
Especially when he (George) specifically said to Sam Jackson (when Sam asked him about it), that the Jedi get blue or green and the Sith get red.
@@DamianHowardTV”what about purple “ …. “You might get purple…”
"For over a thousand generations, the Jedi Knights were guardians of peace and justice in the Old Republic." Crazy how much came from that one line in the first movie.
And that's why we need George Lucas's input now more than ever! May the force be with you all
I wish I had a time machine to warn him never to sell to Disney
Really then why did so many dislike his last 3 movie and was so happy when he left.
Funny how we forget!
@@Yokyle4356 that would be great 😭
God I’ve been dreaming for that for all of eternity
@@adamlatour8837 his input is important but giving him complete creative control is how we end up with the terrible dialogue and poor screenwriting. The prequels could've been amazing but instead they needed a 7 season show and multiple novels to fully flesh out those movies. Something that is currently happening with the sequel trilogy. Great TV shows to flesh out poorly made movies.
I've always thought Sith are more aggressive, excessive, emotional and passionate. Which is why Sith ways usually tend to drive a person into obsession, therefore making that person bad due to the lack of empathy and care for others.
yeah, that's the very point of the Sith and the dark side. as Anakin says, they rely on their passion for their strength, their emotions. whereas the Jedi control their emotions and their dark side to keep it in balance (the "light side," which is really just the Force at balance with itself). so they are more compassionate and selfless.
Your vision is flawed
@sj conker that's not really true nor fair imo, the emperor only wanted power for himself. he was only willing to settle for peace if he was at the top. "the sith will rule the galaxy... and we shall have peace." i mean, he literally started wars just to gain power. he was entirely greedy and selfish, not empathetic to everyone's plight. Vader's motivation, on the other hand, might have partially been to bring order but he was still evil, torturing and murdering left and right. doing things because you feel the ends justify the means, "for the greater good," that's not really any form of empathy or caring, it's delusion. if one were truly empathetic one wouldn't do those things, you have to be desensitized to do so, which is the opposite of empathy, even if one "justifies" it as being for the greater good. way i see it
This is actually a fulfilling breakdown..I've thought the sith had light in them, just as the jedi has darkness.. Therfore, sith are just hopeless good guys, which can be turned.. They coudlve done better portraying that in the sequels 😅 *cough** cough**
@@ReporterRed that's true for sure but people also forget Vader did what he did as a form of self inflicted torture. He felt he deserved his suffering and deep down each person he murdered was a way of repressing Anakin. That's why Vader refused a comfortable suit that wouldn't tear at his burnt flesh. This is why when Vader is alone in his quarters the Sith tortures himself by reliving his evil deads mentally. All the way back to killing his wife. In the end Vader wanted Luke to tell Leia that he "changed" and Anakin was reborn. This is massive because Vader claimed to have destroyed Anakin in Rebels.

Dude what? I can't understand this sentence
Anakin never killed Mace Windu. He cut off his hand. By this logic, even then he was still acting as a Jedi, not a Sith.
Interesting point
He attacked Windu out of confusion, in the moment. Windu was still somebody he knew, a teacher. You wouldnt really cut off the head of your teacher even if he was a bit of an ass. Dooku he beheaded becuz from his point of view Dooku was pure evil
He helped in killing him
@@SamuelSaveli Anakin beheaded Dooku because he wanted Revenge.
@@SamuelSaveli thats why he now has a missing hand and not a head 😆
When George Lucas said, “they aren’t super people.” I wish the makers of the sequels would have read that. They intentionally made Rey an overpowered captain marvel like Mary Sue. George Lucas had Jedi use the force like a tool, and it augmented natural abilities like jumping, running, reflexes, etc. But it wasn’t and was never meant to be a super power. Jedi still had to physically exercise to get physically stronger. They had to train and hone both the force and their physical/mental skills. The sequels made the force a comic book like Superman power and ruined the subtlety that made the force so mysterious and interesting when we all first learned about it. #Makethesequelsnonecanon
Episode 7-9 will never be canon in my book :D
Yeah this is why I just don't see the events of episodes 7, 8, 9 as consistent with the rest of what happens in Star Wars, and therefore are not proper Star Wars movies to me. More like fan fiction inspired by Star Wars.
Too bad they don't read ;-). -- On the other hand, for all we know, they might have read it and went ahead with their agenda anyway, we know they do this so what does it matter, really?
Good news: 7-9 are _not_ canon because we the choir do not sing them. Disney likes to pretend they can dictate canon, they will learn what has become obvious to all who are not blind: They've failed trying to convert the hadcore (Jedi) fanbase. They will try the lightning before the fall.
In my opinion Jedis should also never marry.(That's why I don't think Thrawn trilogy is consistant with SW since Luke as a Jedi should never marry anyone.)
Because Jedis have more power and they must make some sacrifices to keep the darkside in check.
Do the different powers used by extremely powerful users outside of the sequels count?
Random thought from a former 1977 Star Wars kid (me): I love that Lucas makes this stuff up and it becomes absolute canon - no matter what Disney does or what fans speculate. George says it - and that's that.
as it should be, unless he starts getting crazy with it
but there's no reason for Death of the Author while the stories are still good
I do believe that even if Anakin wasn't discovered when he was, him being an all-star pod racer would have only fueled his ego as his celebrity status grew, which would have only made him all the more malleable to someone like Palpatine. Worse, without the teachings of the Jedi, he would have gone dark much sooner.
Agreed. End of the day SOME help for his many issues, even if its from people out of touch with what those emotions are like and the force itself, is better then just letting him run loose to figure it out himself. Ive been through severe emotional issues myself and even a drop of help goes a long way.
Nah, if the Jedi hadn't found him as a kid, his natural abilities would have just flourished on their own and he'd of become like Rey.
,..and you all would be crying "he's a marry-sue!"
He would be a sith drawn to the light in awe. as soon as palpatine shows he’s true colours, anakin would oppose him in rule of two duel
would he have been a podracer tho? He had never won a race before so i doubt anyone would have backed him and watto probably wouldn't have let him. the only reason he raced was because of qui gon discovering him

It's a shame KK and Disney squatted and took a leak on George Lucas's sequel trilogy. Darth Talon would have been awesome.
Hate to break it to ya, but Lucas sold Star Wars so his sequel trilogy is irrelevant. Disney had complete control over it and took a leak on nothing. Whether you like the movies or not is your own opinion, but I'm sick of people villainizing Disney when Lucas decided to sell it to them. They made movies that many people think were good. And they made incredible spinoffs and shows.
@@general_cameroni the Disney movies were horrible they really ruined Star Wars
@@sebastiangonzalez976 well that's completely an opinion. Considering the fact that many people including myself like the sequels you can't objectively say that they were horrible or ruined anything.
@@general_cameroni You can't objectively say there was a roadmap for them either; VII & VIII making no hints whatsoever that Palpatine's still around. You don't just pull something that big out of your butt in the final film 🤦🏻♂️

Makes sense that the Sith would always lead to their own self destruction
Them finding Anakin was the will of the force, not some random event that occurred as result of a blockade. It would’ve happened eventually, with or without blockade
When it comes to the Jedi, I don't think coincidences are common. Especially when they result in something monumental happening. Just like the droids ending up at Luke's farm. It was the will of the Force the Jawas brought them there to sell.
I've never really been a fan of the whole *"..it's the will of the Force"* mumbo jumbo. For a well..."Force" that's not supposed to be anthromophised people seem to accredit will or even personhood to it alot as if it has a plan or agenda.
Oh, I'm sorry if we are following what GL wrote. @@navilluscire2567
I wonder what George thinks of the SWTOR story with Vitiate/Valkorian.
I personally love how the Old Republic writers filled in that timeline and a massive war between the Jedi and Sith is just awesome. In fact, I prefer the Sith Empire to the Rule of Two. There is just so much more room for storytelling when there are thousands of Sith at each other's throats.
Agree..I really enjoyed the books etc I’ve read w/ the Sith Empire around. I read Revan first bc I love the character and the game and hope to see his story in series or movie form some day. KOTOR deserves that much. But I still need to finish the Bane series..I pretty much know what happens but it’s cool learning about his origins, etc.
SWTOR does not really line up with George Lucas' views of the Sith and the Force in general. You can prefer it, that's fair, but it's just untrue to claim both (not that you did, just many "fans" do)
@@ReporterRed I don't think Lucas was ever interested in filling in the backstory in-depth. To him Star Wars is only about the Skywalkers. That's why when he speaks about the origin of the Sith and Jedi, he's pretty vague. I think they're just ideas in his head and he never sat down to organize those ideas by writing them down. Those details just weren't super-important to the story he was telling.
I take a different view. I see Star Wars as a massive universe with thousands of years of history ready to be explored. That's why I love the Old Republic era so much.
One thing Lucas suffered from a bit over the years was that his story was so popular, it led to fan theories and novels and all kinds of other things that didn't actually come from his mouth but were regarded somewhat as "canon". The prequels fell flat when they came out because people already had an idea of what was "supposed" to happen or how things were "supposed" to be. But Lucas hadn't really said much about how things were, it was just speculation by fans. Then Anakin becomes space Jesus, the Jedi Knights have a Council in an ivory tower and are basically superheroes, the Clone Wars had nothing to do with cloning Jedi or regular people or whatever. A lot of people didn't like that, at all. It's the same thing with the Legends novels that happen after the OT, sure they were rubber-stamped by the company but they didn't have much to do with Lucas' vision for a sequel trilogy. Lucas would have thrown them out just like Disney did. And people would hate on Lucas for continuing HIS story.
I always find it fascinating to hear what Lucas himself really thought about things because in the end, it's his opinion that matters the most. Lucas is to Star Wars what JRR Tolkien is to Middle Earth. Their opinion is really the only canon. You still have people arguing over how the Jedi weren't REALLY good after all and they're basically the same as the Sith, but in Lucas' mind (as the creator of the universe) the Jedi are the clear good guys and the Sith are the clear bad guys. There's no gray, moral ambiguity. The Jedi lost their way a bit and were blind during the Clone Wars, but they were the only thing holding back evil from the galaxy. Also, in Lucas' mind, the Sith are the imbalance in the Force, not the Jedi/Sith dichotomy (people argue ALL THE TIME that the Jedi and Sith both needed to die off for there to be "balance" but George did NOT see it that way). The Jedi use the Force for balance while the Sith pervert it into their own tool for power.
I never really did take any Star Wars stuff that George Lucas didn't write as canon.
I wasn't really interested in it.
I agree with all your points.
Another thing is that Star Wars Expanded Universe made personal attachments including especially having a wife and kids (like Luke being married to Mara Jade and they're having a son named Ben) to be fine, but George Lucas' Star Wars Universe made it loud and clear that personal attachments are forbidden to Jedi. In George Lucas made personal attachments and the fear them from as Anakin's path to the darkside.
Agree with everything here 100%.
I’ve always loved and been thrilled by the concept of Jedi and Sith, the Light vs the Dark
I heard that in legends, Darth Plagueis created Anakin using the Force, and was looking for him, and that's why Maul was in Tatooine originally (albeit he didn't know at the time), not only for the Naboo delegation. It's possible that hadn't Qui-Gon found him, Plagueis would have trained the Chosen One into a Sith Lord.
The Jedi Code:
(copying and pasting from online)
"There is no Emotion, there is Peace.
There is no Ignorance, there is Knowledge.
There is no Passion, there is Serenity.
There is no Chaos, there is Harmony.
There is no Death, there is the Force."
The Sith Code:
(This one I know off by heart and can recite it at will, without searching up the words)
"Peace is a lie, there is only Passion.
Through Passion, I gain Strength.
Through Strength, I gain Power.
Through Power, I gain Victory.
Through Victory, my chains are broken.
The Force shall set me free."
In episode 1 anakin says “I had a dream once I was a Jedi and I freed all the slaves” I think this was true it was a vision if qui gon Jin had lived and trained anakin but destiny changed it.
Maybe it was referring to the clone army, which are essentially a slave army the more you think about it. Visions aren't always literal, it was probably a dream of him leading the slave army (clones) against their oppressors (The Jedi)
well....makes sense
after all, he was a slave
I am sure that he fantasized about being hero that frees the slaves
being a slave is a tragic life that would make anybody fantasize for much better life
@@fomalhauto all I’m saying is it could’ve been a vision like the ones he had; with his mom and padme but it changed when palpatine laid his eyes on him
I see the rule as being the siths way to constantly improve they'll keep getting stronger to beat their masters then their apprentice will have to become even stronger to beat them. It's a constant growth of strength with the fulse promise that you can become the one true dark lord of the sith. It's like the dark side feeds off it

Thank you for your video, great scenes from the movies/cartoon/ video games etc... to flesh out this lore.

Theory.. the best Star Wars youtuber
What’s the theme used in the beginning of this video ?
"Treachery is the Way of the Sith."
George Lucas is such a master storyteller. I know he has plenty more stories in there, whether it'd be Star Wars or something else. Sometimes I'd like to find out what goes on inside of his head these days.
_"You are so beautiful."_
_"Only because i'm so in love."_
"George Lucas is a master storyteller."
@@rithrius5384 Master storyteller, not master dialogue writer. Though for me, that’s not really saying a lot compared to the whole story arc stretching from 1-6.
Might I add, the reference that I quoted up above had everything to do with the topic of what Theory was addressing in this video, which was the Sith.
Sorry but he’s definitely not. The original trilogy was good because he he’s a great sfx artist and the people he worked with could call him out on his bs. When he became successful enough to do what he wanted, he made some really bad movies, and relied on actually talented storytellers to save his story with tv shows and comics. I love star wars, but it was really a fluke for George Lucas.
@@maryarunkle7519 That’s quite a bold claim. I don’t think it’s fair to disregard George Lucas like that.
I never denied that he had inconsistencies here and there, I just don’t constantly dwell on them. It’s one thing to point out his inconsistencies, it’s another to almost credit discredit him entirely for his involvement in the Star Wars franchise.
If you have sources about how he was on “his bs”, I’d love to see/read them.
Yes, he had some help from others, yes, others played a significant role and extended the franchise greatly in the making of others movies, games, tv series and what not, like Dave but it all boils down to George Lucas’ blueprint in regards to the entire story, lore, and everything we’ve come to learn and love about the Star Wars Universe. You can like it, you can dread it, but that’s something that should be respected whether if you like the Prequels or not.
I understand that even creators and storywriters need some help and enhancements on a few places at times to make their universe grow and work, by no means is he perfect at doing it, but to straight-up call him a “fluke” for his own astronomical child is pretty strong, let alone disrespectful if you ask me.
George lucas is the only person in the world who know Star Wars, because he’s the creator.
This video was amazing. Now I want to learn more.... I have so many more questions. Thank you Theory 🙌🏽

This sound’s like it isn’t part of the Original E.U, there were war’s between Jedi & the Sith Lord’s in that continuity.

I don’t remember seeing the off-shoot Sith fighting each other in K.O.T.O.R.1, in K.O.T.O.R.2 Darth Nihilus & Darth Sion betrayed Darth Traya but I believe it’s because of her teaching’s.
Next to Anakin Skywalker my favorite Force wielder was most definitely count dooku. He was the strongest and wisest next to Master Yoda when he turned to the dark side he was a force of evil to be reckoned with. An aristocrat, a gentleman, a strategist, expert duelist, strong in the force, knew the good side, knew the bad side. Where would the war have gone if palpatine would have been satisfied with dooku?
darth bane trilogy is nuts. I'd love to see more of zannah.
Ya, those books are amazing.
It is so cool to hear George Lucas himself talk about the Old Republic!
I like Lucas' input here. But I either miss something or there's a controversy. He says a war between Jedi and Sith never happened. Then, digs a whole lot of things which pretty much happened to be, well...a war between Jedi and Sith lol. I mean, Lucas kind of ordered the Darth Bane trilogy to be written. The book mentions Revan and Malak story arcs from KOTOR. Now, KOTOR was not a direct war between Jedi and Sith but it happened as a side effect of other wars. And SWTOR - as a continuation of the same story - is even more of an exact war between these two factions. So, I'm not really sure how he meant that.
Even though the Darth Bane trilogy connects the (KO)TOR era with the movies perfectly.
Can you make Jedi vs Sith Kathleen Kennedy's perspective? I bet that would be super interesting and well planned out...
Kennedy's perspective is 'Sith are red bad guys and Jedi are blue good guys.' Period. I genuinely think the woman knows next to nothing about Star Wars. When she should have been paying attention to what Lucas was doing, she was plotting how she would ride his coattails and eventually screw him over.
Nothing that malicious, just more of running a business product, not telling a story or exploring a world. Hence why it's terrible.
I am going to be reading the legends books in chronological order and I am on the first Into the Void so this is a really cool video to watch whilst being in the middle of reading the book that covers the same subject
What’s the background music in this video?
How much would you love to see a show about the Sith period and all their plotting against each other? If done properly (i.e. by Filoni and/or Favreau), that could be really awesome.

Darth Bane trilogy is not only one of the most entertaining reads, but it’s also a pivotal point of lore and puts so much of the Sith in context.
Also, Bane successfully essence transferred to Zannah. The author clearly implies it with the reflexive flexing of the fist after Bane attempts the essence transfer, which was a remnant of Bane’s orbalisk infection.
No he doesnt.
The author himself stated that Zannah won, and Bane failed. The reason her hand was twitching was because some of Bane's habits got put into her, but she was the victor.
The author was actually quite frustrated that people did not understand that straight away.

The King of Star Wars has spoken! Great to hear from George’s universal mind!
4:48 I'm sorry, the thought bomb?
I wanna know his thoughts now on the ancient Jedi and Sith and how they might've evolved. Writers usually keep building their worlds long after their works are distributed. I love Kotor 1&2 and Swtor.
I really like the Dawn of the Force comics with the very ancient Je'daii where all other Force using traditions branched off from. But I would be interesting in what George's ideas were for the Jedi's origins.
People complaining about Disney stepping away from Lucas's ideas and at the same time not turning "The Old Republic" into Canon and live-action form don't realize that it's not George Lucas's Canon at all. And what they want to see - many Jedi vs many Sith - never happened. But with Disney they can actually see it - Jedi-Sith War was already canonized in some books.
Well, we could have had best of both worlds with Lucas' ideas for sequels and EU ideas for Old Republic, but alas Disney fucked up, that's why people are apprehensive about them even touching Old Republic now
I love this video. The rule of two was indeed, the most perfect system for the Sith... but even the Banite system was meant to failure, because even with just two, those two would try to backstab or overpower the other breaking the rule of two, and that is the problem with the rule of two: not even this system could keep the selfishness of the Sith in check, and even if it did worked for a millennia, it was still always a fragile system. That is why the dark side will never win: it is self defeating.
