FILM DESCRIPTION:
After 19 years as a prisoner, Jean Valjean (Hugh Jackman) is freed by Javert (Russell Crowe), the officer in charge of the prison workforce. Valjean promptly breaks parole but later uses money from stolen silver to reinvent himself as a mayor and factory owner. Javert vows to bring Valjean back to prison. Eight years later, Valjean becomes the guardian of a child named Cosette after her mother's (Anne Hathaway) death, but Javert's relentless pursuit means that peace will be a long time coming.

The French are known for being very dramatic and honor bound - a mix that can be deadly under certain circumstances, such as an over-zealous police man.
Honor used to mean a lot more to a person than now a days, just look towards the Japanese for honor bound
@@vesstig - Honor does seem to have become an archaic term, and the modern meaning appears to just be a nice thing to say about a person, rather than a quality or trait of a person's humanity, like virtue also used to be. We rarely speak on these terms, save maybe if one studies ancient philosophy, reads just about any literature before the 20th century, or gets into mythology or religious studies. It's amazing how in roughly the past 500 or so years of the modern world how much of 5000 years what we know of humanity and what we mean by it has been forgotten. Granted, things like slavery ought to be forgotten, but yet the vices and ways we choose to manipulate and decieve each other appear to have the upper hand and get rewarded more than trying to live an honorable and virtuous life. But things of honor and virtue can only hold a greater meaning if one were to believe they have the greater reward beyond this life. Without understanding this it is hard to truly understand and appreciate the tragedy in Javert's suicide. Some modern folk have, usually after losing their religion and coming to an understanding of how hollow modernity has become. People that have hope for better things to come generally are not going to commit suicide. They might be willing to lay down their life in a war to defend their country (primarily because of the family and their future the wish to protect) or die for what they believe is a worthy cause. However, if your country doesn't want you to defend it, or the war has little to do with protecting your family, but are instead a chess piece in a game played by people that just want to see what drama they can cause in the world, either you give in to doing your job, right or wrong, or you loose sence of purpose and wonder what is the point of living. But that's just one path that can lead to the tragedy of suicide. In some aspect, this deconstruction of what a person believes about the world and their place in it is part of what has eroded honor and virtue to appear meaningless platitudes. Or, in as much as we believe in the erosion, we lose faith in humanity, and start to lose touch with the value of our lives. However it be, we've long passed the worry of if this new world order would lead to tossing the baby out with the bathwater, for we've made those shallow graves, then nuked both baby and bathwater to where where an eerie shadow remains if what used to be humanity.

Am I the only one who actually FULLY enjoyed Russell Crewe’s singing? Like it was passionate and strongly sung, not forgetting the fact that he had to sing next to completely trained singers and still sounded great
I like the non perfect voice, it adds another layer of realism
nahh, I watched it in the theatres and really felt it, so when I read reviews stating how much they disliked Russell Crowe, I was shocked. I thought it brought such a deep dynamic. And really added to this scene in particular.

I don't hate him... but I feel that they should have dubbed him... this is a production that was made with millions of dollars and they couldn't get a good singer to dub him well? I feel dub singing is becoming a lost art....

Ik don't agree. His death makes you wonder and put you on to thinking. His whole life he lived for a cause he was inprinted. But only at the end he sees thé truth. That makes you think. So good scene. .. you can understand his Point of view. Good or bad. It learns you to imagan a Total other perspective that People can have and Mabey your vieux opens how People can get so far to do things and decessions that are inprinted by others (goverments, powerfull People, or believings faiths etc..)
@@MrAlex15122 I also see this as a parallel to Saint Peter and Judas Iscariot, both men betrayed Jesus and were forgiven by him, Saint Peter chose to live and change, Judas chose death out of shame. To me Saint Peter would be Jean Valjean, who was forgiven by the bishop and thus chose to change his life and Judas Iscariot would be Javert, who was forgiven by Jean Valjean but chose death instead of change.
I find his persona very i teresting as he was driven what he believed as good. What I do not understand is why he comitted suicide as he strongly believed i God ans that would mean he would go straight to hell. Anyone has a theory?
Russell Crowe's singing was passable and his acting was flawless in this scene. The torment and desperation were totally believable.

Personally I always found the character of Javert to be one of the most interesting in Les Mis. He's portrayed to be the villain but he isn't a bad man, he's following the law which he believes to be right and just, but sees it as black and white, no taking into account of people trying their best to survive through minor offences ( such as stealing a loaf of bread to save a starving child, for example ) in a very difficult social and economic time. The class divide and levels of poverty making it near impossible for the very poor to make an honest living so forcing many of them to resort to prostitution, stealing etc. to survive but then getting punished for that too as it was illegal. Javert being "from the gutter too" gives him very little sympathy for those who don't follow the law and pull themselves out of it as it were, like he did , he knows it is possible but very difficult but views the law to be gospel and it to be people's duty to follow it with the same faith he does, not believing in the 'chaotic good' way of Jean Valjean , who did a lot of good but through mostly illegal means ( stealing bread as mentioned above , breaking parole and disappearing to become an honest man , saving Marius from the barricade among others ) . When his faith of the law is broken when Jean Valjean saves his life, he would have prefered to die at Jean Valjean's hand in an act of revenge for his Years in prison rather than be spared and "live in the debt of a thief", to be forced to accept that he chased a good man down for all those years and the law isn't as perfect as he thought .His suicide shows his inability to accept this and his last act on earth was breaking the law as suicide was illegal in France at the time.
Personally I believe Russell Crowe did an amazing job portraying Javert and his singing (particularly his last song before his death, which is one of my favorites of the whole film ) shows his faith and how it eventually crumbles away . while he maybe an actor as opposed to a singer, unlike other members of the cast, I don't think his singing voice is bad at all , and it does capture the essence of the character very well which is the most important part.
Fantine's 'I Dreamed a Dream' was sung in a similar manner to Javert's song on the bridge, with both meant to capture the character's pain and shaken faith. she sang through tears, lamenting what her life had become and Javert sang through panic and dispair of his misplaced faith and his world crumbling down around him. Both songs highlight the emotion felt by the characters and some parts are acted more so than sung , making it more realistic and more moving than if they had belted out a perfect ballad without Fantine's choked tears or Javert's stricken near hyperventilating.
Overall while his voice isn't perfect, I do think it is good and certainly not deserving of the criticism it gets .

Actually Javert is not a villain, but just an antagonist, there is a difference for a villain is a antagonist yes but an antagonist is not always a "villain". A villain is an embodiement of evil but an antagonist is simply the one who defies the protagonist. As we all know, Javert is just doing his job and is following his moral; seeing Valjean as nothing but a bad person, he swears to apply the law on him which is not totally evil right? He is just the counterpart of Valjean and his morals. Therefore, Javert is not a villain.

If you look at it a certain over-analyzed way, this is more sacrifice than suicide. He defined himself by his duty to the law, and in saying the line "it's either Valjean or Javert" before jumping, he fully aware that he would either have to go back on his entire identity or condemn the man who just saves his life - he chose to save Valjean.
But that only goes to show just how chained to his path he truly was. Sure, that when you choose your path in life, you must go throught with it until the end, if it's worth it, but that doesn't mean you can't stray from it sometimes, actually, that is necessary, as long as you manage to go back to it later and use what you've learned outside from the path to make it better up ahead.
The 1998 nonmusical adaptation takes this theme more literally, with Javert telling Valjean that he doesn’t want him to return to prison, and frees him when he was supposed to take him back, then committing suicide because he knew he had broken the rules he believed in.
I understand what you are saying, but it’s my strong opinion that Javert had his heart in the wrong place to begin with. Living people should not have to serve non-living (dead) laws. The very idea of “the law” is one that’s inherently flawed, unjust, subject to too many biases and is ultimately only as good as the person administering it for their own reasons.
My standard is independent of the law: Am I doing good and making a positive impact, whether within or outside the confines of whichever legal system’s been imposed on me. To run afoul of the law but have a heart of gold, or at least a understandable and sympathetic motive, is to be praised. To administer the law with a heart as cold as ice, is to be condemned.
Therefore I guess you can call me a legal utilitarian in the sense that unlike Javert, I only try to not run afoul of the law so as to not compromise my own quality of life or that of my loved ones. As for the idea of the sanctity of “the law” itself, I will never buy into the idea that a good person is necessarily a law abiding one, at least not at all times. The law (barring ones that make sense to me) has no inherent sacredness as a concept, it’s all down to people and the set of interests they’re trying to protect.
Lawyers and judges are two sides of the same coin: That of standing up for a set of interests, where both are equally (and often are) capable of defending great evil. A lot of times it’s the manipulation and outright betrayal of a legal system that leads to acts of true justice, or at the very least, protect those in need.
And I believe more than a few people think the way I do, despite the good old “law abiding citizen / productive member of society” that’s used to keep us in line.
(What I said is exactly what I’d say to talk someone out of the legal profession, unless their intent is to undermine these systems. Hehe.)
Even if Valijean bribed his way to becoming mayor, I’d see no problem whatsoever with that because he did good things as a person afterwards. It’s not always how you get there (barring certain kinds of acts that I find unacceptable), it’s how you use your position and what you do while remaining good at heart and committed to a good set of causes.

Because that's what Javert believed, that the law is good, to follow it make you a good man and to enforce it as well. He wasn't evil, he did not commit evil or harm uppon others for the sake of harming, but to uphold his sincerest belief

I understand your point of view but I see it more as a suicide because he realizes that he spent his career and life enforcing corrupt justice in the name of god which he found an irredeemable evil, and he committed suicide because even at the precipice of this epiphany he could not come to terms with abandoning his lifelong morals and black-and-white thinking as it terrified him

I always felt his singing was a reflection of his character, the stiffness in his voice as he sings portraying his personality from a military lifestyle, occasionally breaking out in a higher tone but always returning to his way on the next line. I felt his character was trying to show emotion in his singing but it was always hidden behind his personality/manner. I feel Russell Crow’s take on Javert shows the character better than someone who would of had a greater vocal performance.

You are correct
The priest was to Valjean as Valjean was to Javert. They both showed that through compassion, your outlook on life can change fundamentally. It doesn't have to be about revenge. Love can win.
Though, for Javert, it was too much to bear. He spent his entire life on, what he thought, was duty and justice. When he realized that he spent 20 years on a fruitless endeavor, he couldn't bear it. That same trial changed Valjean into a saintly figure. You can almost say the same of Javert, as he sacrificed his life rather than complete his duty and turn in Valjean. They both sacrificed themselves.
Javert is only doing his job, doing his duty. I feel sorry for him, he’s a slave of the system and in the end he realizes that he’s unable to get out of it. To me he’s the real miserable in the story. I love how human Russell Crowe played him.

The symmetry and repetition in this musical is amazing, if you want chills I suggest the 10th anniversary edition - Dream cast in concert. They did a pretty good job for a film with action and such but the difference when they are more or less stationary is astounding ...

Not gonna lie, that crunch sound effect had me stifling a laugh in the theater.
I know I shouldn't be laughing, but that sound is so artificial, and sounds so out-of-place, it did spark a laugh in me.
It's supposed to be a serious scene. A man of law, spared by a criminal he hated, being so psychologically-tormented that it lead up to him taking his own life, but that sound...
I wonder if it would have been better if as he hit the dam, the screen cut to black and didn't play anything, other than the music.

Great protagonist. He truly believed in the law and justice to the point of blindness and upon his eyes being opened to the injustices of justice he just couldn’t take it.

I see him as the antagonist, I'm curious as to how you find Javert to be the protagonist
@@E_OrungYou can have 2 protagonists in a story that are antagonistic to each other, there are many core parts of the film where Javert is essentially a secondary protagonist when Valjean is offscreen.
@@bubalackgaming8892 I know you can have a secondary protagonist and I see where you're coming from but idk, he just has always felt much more antagonistic to the overall plot. He's in the way of almost everyone, not just Valjean. His department looks down on Fantine, he hunts down Valjean, endangers Cosette and stands in the way of the revolution. He just seems to me to be constantly in the way of all the protagonists' goals and aspirations minus Eponine. His death, while deeply emotional, felt deserved. He had a villainous point of view: people can't change. He let his belief destroy lives and cause deep emotional trauma and when he realised he had done these rather despicable acts he took his life. That's how I see it.
@@bubalackgaming8892you mean a foil. Javert and Valjean are foils of each other. Valjean is the protagonist, Javert is the foil and antagonist, though he is not necessarily EVIL as the two are not mutually exclusive. A foil character is basically a character that juxtaposes the protagonist.

That's actually Russell against a greenscreen. And the snack of the impact is obviously going to be there, because he (Javert) didn't fall onto a pile of pillows.

@@leafleap just watched the movie for the first time and never have I found myself with such dissonant reaction in such a short period of time. Tearing up during every sad song but laughing to tears every time Russell Crowe sang. After this splash I just couldn’t keep it together for the rest of the movie
Im so confused, I loved Russel Cowe's singing. Without even knowing people were criticizing him I watched the movie and considered him as the best singer.
You are certainly not the only one. When I first watched this movie, he became one of my favorite characters, because of how they portrayed him as a man of the law, and of course, his singing won me over as well.
If you listen to someone with a stronger voice you will get the criticism. The part deserved a much better singer than Crowe. In fact the whole movie deserved better singers.
@@brontewcat the actors did more than a good enough job in my opinion and i even preferred some of the songs in the movie over the Broadway play. Take Valjean's soliloquy for example yes Hugh Jackman's voice crackles and sometimes misses notes but the emotions his combination of acting and singing conveys are wayyy better than what any other versions have to offer
Mr. Fuoco I think it depends on what you are looking for. I feel emotionally moved by music, often more than by a performance. A really good singer makes me feel much more in tune with what the song is saying than the performance. So I did not feel much from Crowe’s performance.
The other thing is, many of the performances you see these days are concert performances, not the performances from the show. It is very difficult (in my respectful opinion) to compare the film version (in which there are many takes) to an actor’s nightly show performance - which may change subtly night to night, and over time. I have seen Les Miz twice on stage with wonderful singers and acting, and the singing in the film disappointed me badly.

I believe that was to make certain the viewer knew he was actually dead. From that height, a water landing could be survivable, but not if one lands on the concrete edge of the pool.
In the live performances I have attended, he simply jumps off into darkness. There was no sounds, but it is clear that it was a final act.

@@bobbyricigliano2799 you don't need to hear the bones breaking to understand death. It's symbolic. This comes from a XIXth century french book, there's not going to be any sequels where people you thought were dead are actually alive, so you don't need to add an entire shot to confirm his death, people are not stupid.. That's just lazy XXIst century writing. Adding a shot + sound effect to his death is *at best* a bit too much at worst just hilarious. I personally laughed out loud when I first saw it. Like wtf were they thinking ?

@@Brittn_wolfFor Javert's whole life and career, he held the steadfast belief - backed up by personal experience - that criminality and immorality were inextricably linked. In this, he held confidence that - in the eyes of God, the law and society, his cause and his choices were righteous.
Then Valjean comes along and presents him, for the first time in his life, a real dilemma. Valjean is a criminal, on the run from the law. For this, he deserves jail. But he also spared his life, showed genuine kindness to others, and continuously put himself in danger of being captured or killed for the sake of other people. And now Javert is in a bind.
He cannot jail Valjean without being immoral.
He cannot free Valjean without being unlawful.
His entire worldview changes and he has to confront the possibility that he has been wrong all this time. And if he was wrong about Valjean, has he been wrong about others. Things are not black and white.
Unable to come to terms with this, he decides he cannot live in a world that, suddenly, is alien to him.
So deep & sympathetic....0:38 -"it is either Valjean or Javert" main theme of the whole story-----freedom has a price....Valjean had it already,Javert didn't find it in the right time till too late...

I think he did a very good job. He has a band in real life, or used to.
For those of you that don’t know Javert was actually a skilled diver in his youth. He really just wanted to take a nice cold swim to clear his head from everything that was going on. Seeing as the water was shallow he did a belly flop to maximize his surface area on the water. His gun not being on his hip however through off his sense of balance and made him fall several feet short of clearing the second ledge.
Anyone who read the book knows that Javert won gold in competitive diving 🥇

I actually liked Javert...I wanted to give him a hug so bad I don’t know what it was about him I didn’t want him to die
because he's not a bad person. Idk about the musical but in the book of Hugo, he's just the perfect incarnation of the law. He is blind of any emotions, follows only his principles. He's not a good man per say, as he doesn't really feel anything for anyone but he's not a bad man. He only makes a fixation on Valjean because he's genuinely convinced that he's dangerous and should get the treatment he thinks is fair. After all, the only "crime" for which Valjean never repaid was that coin he stole from that youngster. So he was, technically, an outlaw. The only time when Javert broke his principles and thus the entire perception of the world he lives in, is when he realizes he *can't* arrest Valjean, and that he was wrong. Which means that all he fought for, for these entire decades, was wrong. That's why he decided to kill himself, because a life without a Valjean isn't a life he wants.
I think no one did. I may not like his extremism in justice but I know he's no monster.

Russell has a lovely, deep voice and puts a lot of emotion into it.
Okay, am I the only one who enjoyed Russell Crowe’s singing more than anyone else’s in the entire musical? Whenever I hear the “is he from heaven or from hell” I get chills all over, it’s genuinely stunning. And “javert’s suicide” was my favourite song of the whole film. I love his singing in “look down” because the tone sets him up to be the logical and analytical character he is. I always thought that was completely intentional, an I was unaware of any criticism until recently. Also everyone’s making fun of the “slapstick” sound effects. However that is kind of how bones sound on when they break. It’s much louder than expected. It’s slightly exaggerated, but not as much as you’d think. Also, I believe they included the sound effect to emphasize that there’s no way he survived that.
He was my favorite too out of the whole cast! He was the only one that commanded my attention for every scene they were in. Never a dull moment with Crowe in this film. His singing was also my favorite. He was fierce.

The music is a direct parallel to Valjean´s soliloquy after the Bishop forgave him. I have always found that beautiful. Two different reactions to mercy. One is redeemed by humbly receiving mercy. The other falls into a state of desperation, pride does not let him receive mercy.

Victor Hugo based both characters on the same man. Both the songs you mentioned are each man being confronted with forgiveness and the chance to start a new life. Valjean embraces it, whilst Javert can't handle it

Russell Crowe gave a stellar performance in Les Miserables. Sure his voice isnt as trained as the others, but each of his songs touched me and that is a job well done.
I think his voice is very powerful but can be soft as shown in this film! And its even more amazing that he wasn't professionally trained. Props to Russell.
His singing may not be on the level of much of the main cast but his delivery and acting is flipping superb.
None of his songs touched me in the slightest. His voice was distractingly bad, and the way he sang the role didn't have anywhere near the power to convey the feeling of a hellbent detective on a decades-long mission to take some perceived criminal down. His voice was so flimsy and nasal, and his face was so single-note sadsack, with not an iota of anger or resolve.

I don’t care what the critics or anyone says about Russel Crowe’s portrayal of Inspector Javert both through acting and singing. I believe he did a STUPENDOUS job. Also, it’s not like he CAN’T sing-he can sing, but perhaps the issue was that he just had a different kind of singing voice.

If you don’t like his singing because its unlike the musical, then watch the musical… I love this rendition because its much more raw and emotional than that of the musical. It’s very different, yes it’s true. But that doesn’t mean it’s worse, it just caters to a different audience.
P.S.: Crowe’s rendition of “Stars” is beautiful too!
