  • Can a real flea be trained to play the blues?
    You decide...
    Celebrating my 100th Flea Circus.
A 20+ year labor of love.
Thank you for all your love and support!
Does my sanity remain? Did I ever have it to begin with?
    5 Camera angles.
Two macro lenses on each camera (for depth of field in macro).
30 Days needed to train BB flea to play on command.
    25 tracks of song composition.
Two weeks and 3 complete rebuilds of all electronics before it worked!
One week to paint and model the piano parts.
All in all several months of work, all, to make it look easy in the end. :-)
I think by the time this circus is complete, we may know...
    Music attribution:
    Ending piano music:
The great and mighty Kevin MacLeod - Merry Go
    Backing track:
B B King Blues Style Backing Track in B
Original compositions by BB Flea, and Walt Noon
(I wonder if this is the first copyrighted piece by a flea?)

Thank you so much Jerome! It seemed like simple idea when I started, and a crazy idea by the time I finished... You know how it goes!

This is amazing! I'm not familiar with flea circuses...do you always use a real flea? I was always under the impression that the "flea" was invisible and an illusion.
This is really cool, great stuff!

Thank you so much! There are at least 3 kinds of circuses. Historically, circuses used real fleas. This is a stunningly difficult art that I have attempted for years with varying degrees of success. The flea looks large in the video, but is actually about the size of a period on a printed page!
The next type of circus is one that uses pantomime and a bit of humbug to present.
Genius performers such as Chaplin, Skelton, Gleason, Dick van Dyke and others have performed this type of act in their own masterful ways.
And last, there is a circus I've always meant to build which uses fleas who have passed away, but presents them on permanent display posed and performing every act in a kind of flea taxidermy. The fleas were even dressed in flea sized cloths!
The act used to work by being "free," but renting you a magnifying glass if you wanted a close look.
I have some info at flea-circus.com. Thanks!

I thought you were joking when I saw your comment, I'm not sure whether to be a tad frightened or impressed. I'm surprised this video hasn't blown up yet
