Very cute designs! Taking a photo and designing over it -- genius move! Now I feel stupid I have never thought of it. 😅
As for the gesso step -- if you use white gesso, it's a great idea. Polymer clay can yellow over time, especially if you use coats. Having the white underlayer keeps lighter parts brighter longer.
