I think this solves one of the biggest issues with instax cameras - crappy lenses. Also, this would be amazing to use on a portrait shoot. The subject/model will get to see/keep something from the shoot day which for me makes a huge difference.
For sure! Looking forward to trying it for some portraits.
Need a ND filter to really use bigger aperture. At ISO 800 @ 1/500 bright day, I cannot shoot aperture smaller than f/11. and Instax film. Once you overexposed over by half stops things start to look washout.
100% the reason I have pre-ordered for portrait sessions.
I do really enjoy every smile that you've put on your face every time you showed the result to camera
😁
A great combination of instant shots with sharp lenses. Awesome location as well
Thanks, Madison. One of my favourite locations!
This is freaking awesome and I’m also loving that people are continuing to make great photography gear to keep growing peoples creativity. With instax film being so readily available, I can see myself using this a lot!
Agreed! Love that companies like Lomography are giving us new options!
I grew up near that burger shack. I'm glad to see these iconic Muskoka buildings on film!
I instantly backed (pun intended) this project when it was announced and am super excited to use it! Your results look absolutely fantastic. Now I just need to get a 4x5 camera 😂
Thanks, Jacob. I'm sure you'll love it!
Jacob Carlson Instead of hunting for a secondhand Graflex or a Japanese folding 5x4, may I suggest getting a plywood “Intrepid” 5x4 like the one Kyle is using? I have one with blue bellows and it is so light to carry and easy to set up, I can really recommend it, and they are very inexpensive too.
@@metocvideo would also recommend the Standard Cameras 4x5 as an alternative to Intrepid
I have one of these backs, plus one in Instax Mini that I hobbled together for my RB67. I love shooting Instax with good quality glass! What it lacks in dynamic range and exposure latitude it makes up for in fun and instant memories. I keep some pre-cut sticky magnets on hand to put on the back of "keepers" that end up on my fridge at home. Priceless.
Regarding exposure, I have found that I get the best results metering Instax at ISO400 in most situations, and that seems consistent with your results.
Great video, thanks!
Man the Instax really shines with the 4x5. Fuji’s instax film develops really fast too! Super interesting. Gone some real “Remember the Titans” vibes from the video haha
Didn’t even know this was a thing. Even more reason for me to dive into 4x5
Great, I plan, like old-school photographers, to use it to give portraiture clients a tangible souvenir. Yesteryear, a photographer, Alan in Baltimore MD, photographed a friend's 8x10 and gave him a polaroid it was so cool.
Thanks for the great vid! Considering stepping into 4x5 and love instant film!
Nail the exposure and wow ♥️. You're going to be a master of judging light!
Your Promo film has really inspired as I will be ordering my Lomoback, and used it on my Graflex, and see if I could modified it on my Get this - a 1899 Rochester Optical 4x5 Premo B as I fully restored it to shooting purposes as I fix the Bellows, and spring clamp lock for the holders, and clean the lens, and fix the shutter, finally I use Kiwi Shoe Polish to give the camera a new polish matt look. Thank You for your video, as I will be looking forward to see more of your videos....
What a place to shoot! Love abandoned places and objects.
The day it was announced, I put my money down. When it was available, I shot literally hundreds of the old 5x4 peel-apart, and when that was discontinued, I used the FP100 pack film, until it got stupidly expensive. This thing is going to be so much fun to shoot with when it arrives!
I think you'll really enjoyed it, Howard! While not as big as the og FP10045, it's still a nice and affordable option.
I could see Noah Waldek picking one of these up and absolutely killing it with it
Agreed!
The colors in these shots are amazing
Everybody like some bush every now and then. Great video.
Makes for such a neat collection of images. Can imagine them being a great little decorative piece somwhere in your office. And so sharp on the instax film! Loved this Kyle :)
🙌 Glad you enjoyed man. Definitely a fun accessory.
also this, as well as a very good learning tool, it also allows you to test a new camera, lens, etc, for light tightness, when you are unsure, or to check if the shutter needs servicing, and to confirm the "dance" before you go whole hog into an expensive emulsion.
also if you need to 'give the camera to someone', aka for a "try before you buy" loaner, this allows some success, not having to learn the film holder side of things, and making those mistakes!!; so good for the whole LF community in general, as the more 'we' recruit to this hobby, the more voices to yell at Fujifilm, Kodack, and IILford to keep them making cameras, film and darkroom stuff to ensure the endurance of LF into the future.
I love Lomography, they're great! You're images turned out fantastic. 😃
Thanks. Big fan of Lomography as well.
Great job.
Super cool images and a super cool video as well!!
Thank you.
Kyle these are really lovey photographs! nailed it as always! Now i want a 4x5 and this back.
Thanks, Will! It's a lot of fun to work with.
Great video kyle and awesome photos.🤙
Thank you.
These all look great out of the box Kyle! At first I thought is was okay and then seeing them again on your channel made me think that I may possibly want to go out and purchase this system for a 4X5 format camera! I loved shooting my LandCamera 250 when FujiFilm was producing it and those that went out and bought it out while selling it for some outrageous prices! It left a bad 'taste' in my mouth! This is probably the next best thing I will ever get to shooting polaroid ever again! Unless LomoGraph ever tries to reproduce the peel apart film again! Hahaha! Great review as per your usual my friend!
Thank you! Yeah. It’s a fun accessory. The instax wide isn’t perfect, but it still works great.
Can’t wait to get a large format camera. You make me want to get one ever video you post. Great video and photos as always!
Thanks Joey! You should try it out.
Thanks Kyle. I'd like to see how it goes on a Linhof Technika.
Then if one really gets into it, drawing frame lines on the ground glass screen would be the way to go I guess. Cheers, Kevin.
These are lush Kyle
Cheers, Jack.
Super cool video, i like it and images are beautiful 😍😍😍
Thank you.
Awesome !
what a cool place, vibe and overall video 🔥
Glad you enjoyed.
really great shots!
Thank you.
Jezz those look great! Can't wait to finish my version do the RB67
You making one? That’d awesome.
I want to buy one of these setups just to have fun! I do not have a 4x5 camera but I would love to try this
Nice video keep on shooting
I think that the look of this Instant film combined with the subject you've chosen for this video worked VERY well! The old cars and their design fit perfectly to this film, I think. Maybe also a model dressed with vintage clothing, outdoor, in a place with no reference to our time, would look incredible.
Thank you. Definitely enjoyed how it worked with the old cars.
your videos are so good 😊
Thank you! 🙏
WOW the difference when u have decent glass in front of INSTAX film is incredible 🤯
Yeah, I was super impressed with the detail that was able to be captured.
Problem with instax is cheap cameras not the film itself
@@CommanderMouse72 yep totally true, it’s got a ton of potential when you use it with good glass
pretty cool stuff
In June I shot an image every day on instax wide film in my Toyo 5x4. I hand made a holder out of old sheet film to keep it centred in a dark slide, loaded it in a dark bag and ejected via an instax wide camera to process it. This certainly looks a lot easier.
I would echo your sentiment about exposure latitude though, this stuff needs an incredibly precise exposure to look good, within a third of a stop I would say.
Yeah, definitely need to nail the exposure. You’re probably right with the 1/3 stop.
Hi Moofy, your process intrigues me. In a dark bag are you removing a sheet of Instax film from its cartridge, placing it in a dark slide and then following exposure replacing it in the cartridge, placing the cartridge in the Instax camera, and then firing the camera to process the exposed sheet?
Derrick Sansome yes, precisely. It needs something to hold it in however, given its smaller than the usual sheet film size.
Thank you for your response Moofy, think I might experiment with your idea. I am pretty clumsy in broad daylight so this could be frustrating to say the least but I will give it a go.
Derrick Sansome practice a lot before you start shouting and get a rhythm for how everything fits. Having an empty cartridge to put exposed film in helps. You will invariably shoot some the wrong way round or eject some upside down until you work it out. Oh and cover the lens on the instax when ejecting!
Great video, Kyle thanks for sharing. I've been driving past that abandoned burger shack for years. If you keep driving north on that same highway you'll see a dinosaur, there is also a Guitar playing Moose on that same highway.... Hint.. It's in Canada. cheers, thanks again.
Glad you enjoyed, Joe.
@@KyleMcDougall Question: Could you mount the Lomo Graflok instant back on one of the 'ole Polaroid Land Cameras... example: The Automatic Land camera series 100 to 400?
@@JP-tp2cy -- No, it's just designed for 4x5 cameras with a Graflok back. It also moves the film plane back about 19mm.
@@monodistortion thank you... It would be great if some day somebody comes up with an instax Wide back for Polaroid Land cameras... thanks again.
Beautiful 👌
🙏
Lmao was not expecting people to be so disproportionately upset in the comments ? Thank you for demonstrating
amazing
love instax. this is sick!
Instant film is so much fun. I shoot Polaroid and Instax film almost every day and love the colors it can produce.
It’s great to see Instax Wide getting the love it deserves, pairing it with a 4x5 seems like a perfect combo.
Definitely a lot of fun. Looking forward to using this once it’s released.
i've found with instax it's not nearly as forgiving as polaroid film. still having a lot of fun shooting with instax wide and i'm really excited to eventually buy a production model of the 4x5 back
Yeah, I learned very quickly that you have to nail exposure.
This is INSANELY sharp for Instax, and I shoot with "real" instant cameras like the Konica Instant Press (my fave camera, video review coming sometime) and the MiNT InstantKon RF70. Just preordered my Lomo back, looking forwards to it!
I'm sure you'll love it, Christopher.
Love the video man!
Thank you!
Thank God I subscribed your channel 🙏
Beautiful pics. Subbed.
Thank you.
Love your Channel and your Videos. The Pictures are super nice, great color, scene etc.
I guess the LomoGraflok solves a high problem with 4x5 Cameras or analogue Cameras in Generel. If you make a Picture from a Model they don't know the End Results or how the Picture will look like. Before you shoot an 4x5 Film you can shot with LomoGraflok before and this will save you i guess from Crappy Images.
The consistency of your videos production quality is pretty impressive Kyle; nice video once again. The way your camera rear standard is moving at 3:25 is really not showing the Intrepid on a good day. Haven’t you lost focus because of it once in a while?
Thank you Nico. I would say the movement is less of the camera, more of me setting it up sloppy. Possibly not tightened down well.
I can also see using this on my Ondu 4x5 pinhole camera, I think it would actually work!
You cost me a fortune every time I watch one of your videos!!
😁
@@KyleMcDougall Mine is due in July...... I think :-)
Great video 😊
Thanks for watching.
you may use those fast 6x9 lens, like 100mm 2.8,
Hey man, nice shots!
Thank you.
The months need to pass by so we can use this already.
your shots look great, I'm definitely gonna pick one of these up (and a LF camera for that matter) some day. also I'm curious as to how you digitized these photos, as I've never had much luck trying to scan the multitude of polaroids I've shot. I'm just wondering if you're using a flatbed, which one?
I think this was with the Epson R2880
@@KyleMcDougall hmm from what I've seen, it seems the R2880 is only a printer, not a scanner?
I would lose my mind if someone could make a new version of FP-100C
So would I.
@@KyleMcDougall Assuming that this back was made by Fuji I can't help thinking that they may be testing the market. Imagine if they kept the machinery for packfilm somewhere!
They kinda did...
Let's do ourselves a favour and buy a pack or two of One Instant's black and white film, I know I'm guilty of it too and haven't bought much but for everyone who wants 3.25x4.25 instant film to come back, we should be supporting the people who are making baby steps with it, even if it seems expensive. That's how it went with the Impossible Project, and look at them now.
@@bnrynlds I wonder if that is the reason they did not sell the machines to Doc when he asked for them. Maybe they don't want to sell the equipment just in case they will bring it back.
Great review! Is it possible to use with a 4x5 pinhole camera? Thanks :)
If you liked this then you should seriously check out the Rezivot polaroid back for the Mamiya RB67 and Mamiya RZ67! It gives you the ability to shoot Polaroid film! And not the Fuji FP100c which is like $80 a pack now, but polaroid originals film! You can use any version even the SX-70 film and you get the full manual control of the Mamiya RB67/RZ67 camera systems! :)
Sounds cool. I'll have to check it out at some point.
Pre Ordered mine September 2020 still waiting for a notice it actually shipped.
Hi! Are you rating the Fuji Instax film @ 800 or lower when using it with 4x5 equipment?
Best/Johan
It looks like you did a lot of “Dodge”ing in using the back.
Can the back be used with a Mamiya Press? Or even an RB67? I would just love that.
Shouldn't this back not easy adaptable to the Polaroid 600SE? What is your opinion?
Great video. I am very excited about this product as my FC film stock is getting depleted. I wonder if you had any issues mounting the back on your camera. Will it work with any camera? I have a Sinar and a Zone VI. Thanks again.
Thanks Benjamin. I didn’t have any issues. And this will work with an Camera with a Graflok back.
Very helpful video. (And cool pix). Thanks for the info. I've an 8x10 Intrepid with a 4x5 reducing back. Do you think the Lomo Graflok Instant Film Back will fit?
Hmmm, sorry, don't know much about the reducing backs.
@@KyleMcDougall Thanks for the reply. Contacted the company and it does fit.
My fridge full of fp100c (and b) is going to be empty at some point. I don't use it to make actual pictures - I use it to validate exposure details. So the question I have for you is - is the Instax film really good enough to give me those fine exposure details? My granddaughter has an Instax cam and I am pretty skeptical that it will - though obviously I have not shot it with a good lens and full control over shutter speed and aperture. So after having done so - what is your take?
That’s tough to say. The latitude is on is oily quite narrow. I’d say it would give you a good general idea, but may not be the best for nailing specific tones.
Hi Kyle, amazing vídeo. Do you filmed with bmcp or xt4? Wich lens ? Vídeo Quality it's top notch, and the instant photos are superb ! Great location also
Best regards from Argentina, love your work
Thank you! This was shot with the Blackmagic Pocket 4k.
@@KyleMcDougall You are very kind to answer, amazing quality very crisp image, what lens ?
Most of this was with the Canon EF-S 17-55 2.8.
@@KyleMcDougall thank you !
Just curious do you know if this back could potentially work on an RB67/RZ67?
I know they had a g-adapter from Mamiya years ago for the rotating back portion for older 4x5 backings to snap on.
Not too sure, sorry!
There are other people making Instax Square backs for the RB67 and RZ67. The 62x62mm image fits well on those cameras.
No one made a 4x5 back adapter for those cameras! Maybe you're thinking of the Quadra back for 4x5 sheet film that looks like a modified Polaroid 545 back.
How do you think this would work with a 4x5 pinhole camera with the crazy 160 or smaller f/stops? Can I control the exposure times just like I normally would? Thanks. Great video.
Hey Wendy, this would be no different than working with ISO800 sheet film from an exposure standpoint.
@@KyleMcDougall Thank you for a very helpful response. I appreciate it.
quality video as always! at what ISO did you rate your film?
Thank you! This was at 800.
What camera are you using when shooting with the film back.
This is an Intrepid MK4 4x5.
@@KyleMcDougall , what are some cameras that are reliable and are compatable with the film back.
In my experience with Instax, *any* chance it gets to blow out the highlights or crush the shadows *_you best believe it fucking will_*
I'm want to try to mount this on my Mamiya Universal Press with a 4x5 graflok adapter. Do you think that would work?
Don’t see why not.
@@KyleMcDougall Thank you for the response!
Does anyone know if it will fit under the ground glass on a linhof
I am assuming so, but would you get much much more quality photos with your 4x5 camera vs a instant camera? Or is this strictly for setting up test shots for a 4x5 shoot?
Yea, instant shot on a 4x5 camera will likely have more potential from a quality standpoint because of the glass. But also you’ll have a lot more control and creative options. But when it comes to quality, the film obviously has limitations.
So, the way to go is to expose for the highlights? In zone 7
Did I get it right?
I was just using an incident meter and placing it in the sun.
I would love something similar perhaps for instax mini in a MF camera
Are you selling any prints from the photos you made in this video? I’d love to support and purchase some of your work!! ◡̈
I'd love some proper Instax 4x5 *and* so many old cameras would suddenly be useful with a 2x3 back.
Whats the song??
Where is this location in Ontario? I recognize that truck. No really, where is this?
This is a junkyard near Milton.
Thanks Kyle, that’s in my neck of the woods. Let’s go shoot some IR film sometime.
OK I get the whole instant gratification thing, but that's what digital is for. It's also clearly "cool", and will increase a persons "Street Credibility" no end.. According to Fuji the image is 62x99mm. If someone needs a cheaper way of learning to use a 5x4 camera, buy a 120 roll film back for the camera that produces 6x9cm images. then load it with the colour reversal film of your preference. The image will be as near as makes no difference the same size. I'm betting it will cost the same, perhaps be slightly cheaper, and there's a good range of different films to choose from. It's just as possible to scan the images. If you use a negative film and you can even go into a darkroom and make a print!
Hey Neil, how about it's just a fun tool to use that some people enjoy? Not sure what you're talking about when you say it's clearly 'cool' and will increase 'street cred'. No one ever said anything about that... Totally fair if this isn't for you and you're not a fan of the idea, but doesn't mean it should be replaced by something else. The more options available the better as everyone is going to have different preferences. I personally really enjoy the back and will be buying one. As for a 120 back for learning, that's a great idea and option as well. And yes, a 6x9 negative would produce beautiful results.
@@KyleMcDougall the "cool" and the "street cred" were jokes! Most old men like me who were brought up on film photography were pleased to get rid of all the toxic chemicals when viable digital cameras came along. That said I still use my film cameras occasionally.
Back in the day I never saw the point of consumer instant film photography. The quality of the image wasn't as good, it certainly wasn't archival, and was expensive. The only advantage I saw was the ability to give photographs to your friends at parties and the like. Commercial photographers used cameras with interchangeable film backs. They could use it to check exposure and composition, (and appease the art director). As an amateur I could never afford that, and I didn't need it anyway.
I looked at the manufacturers website, here in the UK, by the time I add shipping, Import duty, and local taxes I won't get much change from £200. On my budget that's expensive fun. If I could rent one for the weekend, that would be a different matter.
All of that being said, I'm still grateful that you've made the video so I can decide for myself.
Yeah, in the end, it's definitely not a product for everyone, but that's how it goes with most things in this world. I may like it, you may not, and that's all good. I'll be buying one. But I agree with you, it's not a cheap investment, and could be considered expensive fun to some. I enjoyed it enough that I'll be making the investment. :)
Love the body, the film colors no
BUT WILL THEY EVER RELEASE A REPLACEMENT FOR FP-100C??? lol
I wish! But probably not. 😢
@@KyleMcDougall i'll keep dreaming.
What's the iso to this?
Instax films are iso 800
@@robin9339 That doesnt make sense if 4x5 film is usually iso 400 and below
@@TheChariot99 to be honest I agree you too this back is made more sense for people who want to mod their polaroid 110/Mamiya press etc. 4x5 camera should just shoot negative or even slide film(look amazing imo).
Anyone knows if it works on a Sinar?
If your Sinar has a Graflock back then yes it will work great.
I think it is very early to be showing this given that the bad isn't scheduled to be available before April 2021 and the chances of it being done there are poor. They give out this prototype to get channels to hawk the product for them. It should be made clear in all these advertisement for non-existent products that they are just in prototype stage and not available to the general public.
Hmmmm.... definitely not 'hawking products in an advertisement' here. Just testing out an exciting new product. I wasn't paid to make this. Also, I mention in the video that this is a pre-pro model. Also, curious why you think the chances of this being out in April are poor?
I still have Polaroid backs for all my MF cameras.
I like playing with Polaroid but the dynamic range of instant film will never match film or even digital...
Yeah, I think the whole dynamic range thing is something that's just accepted and understood right from the start.
fuckkkkk wish they made a polaroid one
not even any special 4x5 ones just fucking little 600 Type film ANYTHING
I have had three of these Instax wide lomograflok backs and all had to go back. I shoot one shot and it spews out 5 sheets of film. Apparently they know about it and there is a problem if these backs get cold. and it does not get better when it heats up. Seriously why sell these when they know there is a problem. I purchased mine from the Linhof shop and they are embarrassed about it. Seriously good idea. Seriously shit product. I spent a fortune converting my camera to take this back so I have to hope that eventually I will get one that just works as it's supposed to.
Just seems like a LOT of work and expense... for what?
Fun
Wow, what a waste of time. You guys have no idea how much better the real 4x5 Polaroids looked. That just looks like something shot with a FujiFilm Instax Wide 300
just use 4x5 sheet film. It'll look so much better than that polaroid crap 😊
