Labour have launched their defence plans, leading with their 'triple lock' which focuses on nuclear submarines and a constant at sea deterrent for the UK. Does this departure from Labour's 2016 stance represent a change in the party or a change in the state of global affairs?
Meanwhile, today the Conservatives have focused their energy today on clarifying the Equality Act when it comes to gender and biological sex.
Hannah Barnes, associate editor at the New Statesman, is joined by Freddie Hayward, political correspondent.

His Father was a "Tool Maker!"
Well he made a right tool with his son
Won't bother with the next segment if it's about Farage. Im sick of the media's sycophantic promotion of that grifter. Just because he's divisive, which for some reason gets them wet-knickered.
Love him or hate him, and whatever his true motives, he has a major influence on European politics. So his decisions are worth studying and analyzing.
Nothing will ever change in politics whatever party is in power unless accountability is brought back to politicians.
You can change sex.
Sex is not just one specific thing but a multiple of different characteristics. You can change those characteristics and thereby change your sex.
The reason Badenoch got frustrated was because the BBC presenter was actually doing her job and asking about the very real impacts of the policy. Should women (and conversely men) be required to present a birth certificate to gain access to spaces? Other wise how are you policing and enforcing this policy?
Badenoch was unable to answer because she hasn’t actually thought about this policy in any meaningful way.
Didn't Doctor who just do an episode about this
Im so old i can remember when the New Statesman was vaguely left wing
Being realistic about military matters makes you no longer left wing?
@@regarded9702 Nothing real or left wing about retaining such a useless object
@@nolslifegren why do you think it is useless?
@@regarded9702 Because we can never use it and it makes us a target . Rather have a more modern navy etc
Do you consider Atlee not left wing?
Strammer looks so nervous and he is talking about nuclear weapons
In fairness, that's something you probably should feel nervous about.
Tories out, Labour out.

Funny everyone says that. Yet no one actually knows why people are saying this.

There's lots of broad consensus with the Tories.
Yes for it now.
However on 5th July it'll be unilateral disarmament.

No shortage of money for the US military industrial complex. No concern for international law either. No concern for the safety of humanity. No concern for us, none at all.
We are just walking piggybanks.
The safety of humanity relies on credible deterrence, which requires significant investment in the military industrial complex. You are free to not like it, but it’s the truth.

I HATE THIS MAN
What do you mean "now".
Labour created NATO and started our nuclear weapons program.
Seriously? Hardly the “big news” of the day is it? 😂
Because we need to pretend we’re still a big boy?
Since the armed forces personnel has shrunk 37% or 71 thousand since 1997,
It seems both Torie and Labours insistence on their nuclear deterrent comes at the detriment of actual trained personnel.
I DO NOT CONSENT
Possibly the funniest title to a youtube video ever. I even agree with it but it does sound a bit absurd.
Here he comes Mr flip flop.
When I heard that the new leader of the labour party was some noboby I'd never heard of called (Sir?) Keir Starmer, I assumed it was a bad joke on the basis that how could a political party with LABOUR in its name be having a leader with even a non-hereditary TITLE. A title is STILL a title, after all, representing something as obnoxious to the Labour Party as garlic is to Count Dracula. The other thing was that the name "Sir Keir Starmer" sounded more like that of a walk-on part character on "Game of Thrones" than an actual human being. on the basis of those first impressions alone, I just knew no good could come of it.
Having now gotten to know the man (at a distance thankfully!) I can best describe him looking, sounding, and behaving like the unholy Frankenstein construct of the WORST kind of neo-Blairite focus group. The man looks and sounds like the re-animation of the archetypal lower-middle class 1990's Conservative MP embroiled in a sleaze scandal, but without the self-assurance. I say this because his most distinctive feature is those apprehensive eyes. In interview, he wears the terminally worried the expression of someone who spends all his time dealing with dissatisfied customers complaining about declining standards. He looks just like a bank clerk trying to explain to you why the bank reduced your overdraft limit without telling you and is now trying to wheedle out of restoring the additional excess charge fees to your account.
He is the living embodiment of all that has gone south in British public life over the past 50 years and WILL, without a shadow of a doubt prove to be the weakest and WORST British PM ever with his worried eyes. That includes Liz Truss, although they are, in truth, part of the same phenomenon of declining standards in the calibre of British public figures. Back in the day we lamented "All style and no substance" politics. In his case, it will be NO style and NO substances. He will also be eaten alive at international conferences. Even those little Baltic republics will quickly work out that he actually only a constructed and hollowed-out tribute act to Tony Blair and can therefore be safely treated with contempt.

Any actual plan for those massive carriers we paid for???????
One is in the docks near Edinburgh being fixed
the plan was to support the US in a war with China with them. Carriers will be critical. Problem is Russian hypersonic missiles have proven to be able to hit within 10 feet and are completely invulnerable to US and UK AD. i.e Our carriers like our tanks, SAM's, Arty, entire doctrine etc - was mis conceived and of little use in a war against against the east.

As a trans person in the UK and a fan of the New Statesman, I would greatly appreciate if someone in NS told Hannah Barnes to shut up about 'biological sex'. Her reporting on the Cass review on this channel was hard to watch and harder to think that a left wing news outlet thought her views were OK to platform.

Utter nonsense
Ikr, they literally just stated how they could take down Britain and Frances nuclear programs within 24 hours, quite literally threatening to destroy our nuclear deterrent. That’s why this talk about new nuclear programs, because Russia can easily take out our current one and have made it clear that they would.
Ukraine never had its own nukes.
I think this second segment perfectly highlights the difference between debating cultural issues, and waging culture wars. You can have a sensible discussion about the implications of the Equalities Act, and where it might need to be changed. Or you can Tweet out _"We know what a woman is…"_ and make politics stupider and more divided.
when suggesting any kind of change gets you called a racist or a bigot even if completely unjustified creates a situation where the sensible majority stay silent out of fear and only the hateful extremists speak out.
