I see 2 possibilities. Either showrunners dont trust their audience to be capable of understanding any societal structure that differs from their own, so they must force everything into familiar categories from our current society. Or showrunners themselves cant. That goes for almost everything produced in recent... decades I guess. Having said that, I enjoyed the show. The oversaturated and CGI heavy visual design of the show immediately destroyed some (probably unhealthy) expectations I might have as a history buff. Once I started seeing it as graphic novel adaptation, it totally clicked and even woke checkboxes and some prdictable plotlines didnt ruin it for me. Between 6 and 7 out of 10, easy carefree entertainment that has ancient Rome cgi in the background. Very acceptable
I made it through the first episode a little over a week ago, and just haven't had the energy to watch anymore. Maybe I'll push through at 2X speed if you say it gets somewhat bearable after the 3rd, but I'm 100% sure I got way more entertainment out of this review, than I will the multi-million dollar "spectacle" with horrible green screen.
Yeah, it is not a good show. I had to force myself watch the first two episodes. It became easier later on. The show is quite significant in its depiction of chariot racing and the vestals. A milestone for the "genre" in a way. But overall it is obviously "not even close" compared to Rome. The good thing is that it is actually better than Quo Vadis or Gladiator almost in ANY aspect (yes, I know this comparison is not entirely correct). I could also draw comparisons to the gorefest of a Spartacus TV show, but I won't.
I’m so glad we have Scorpus explaining this to us
Very interesting review, I learned somethings. Thanks
Great review!
Great review glad you addressed so many aspects of the history
