Starving For Attention is one of the best autobiographies I have ever read. I first read it when I was in high school (there was a copy of it at my school library). I must had checked it out at least 2-3 times in my sophomore year, junior, & senior years. It definitely was helpful for me. I never had anorexia or any other eating disorder, but I did restrict back then and went through self-esteem issues. I think that book saved me. Thank you, Mrs. O'Neill for your story...❤

I have a copy of the book, and read it until I virtually memorized it.

RIP to the angel in heaven Karen Anne carpenter. 😢 I really wish she had the same chance to get out.
I'm so happy you were able to escape this disease ❤

I was given a copy of your book in 1982 when I was hospitalized for anorexia. I'm in the middle of treatment again (over 50 years of imposed or 'elective' restriction). My body has been impacted a lot. I played Words with Friends with you for a couple of years, and really enjoyed those games.

Thank you for your kind words! I am happy that my story was helpful to you! You might be able to find On the Border of Disorder on Amazon, in a library, or at a used bookstore, as it is no longer in print. I consider myself a recovered perfectionist-having five kids cured me of that!

I'm SO glad you emphasized the lack of self worth as a core issue.... it's not about 'just' wanting control, or anything that really effects anyone externally (at least 'intentionally'- though it becomes totally unintentional at some point when the disease takes over). Taking up space on the planet is painful. It IS about self pressure.... That is so important. There has to be some glimmer of awareness BY the anorexic before anything sinks in. And in a starved brain, that's a hard one.

Thanks Cherry for your candid sharing! What you went thru, will help many others, to know that they too can recover and that they have a lot of living left to do...

I remember hearing about eating disorders for the first time in a hot tub at Latigo Bay Villas with Laury Boone. She was deeply concerned for Cherry and we talked about it quite some time. Thank you for sharing this story.

SlmUSA, I wrote above, would you by any chance have anyway of contacting Laury? I would really love to get in contact with Cherry, for a possible signing my book but share with her my story, though I struggle, her story resonates with me so well and just send her a letter. Im here in Nebraska. I am NOT a stalker...lol..I'm actually from Nashville...but I can actually give you my email address (with phone number and MY snail mail address:) ...My intentions are merely pure of heart. If interested, or questions, please read my above thread :) Thanks in advance for any consideration.

This video provides good insight into the emotional and subconscious motivations for eating disorders. This is helpful for people at every level of the disordered eating spectrum from anorexia to obesity. Thank you Cherry.

the point becomes to be consumed by it. To want something to completely take you over because you are so terrified of wanting more, and so fearful of your own emotions. You don't want to want more. You want to bring your mind prior to the illness, and your body into alignment. You want to show how you feel because you can't say it...

Does anyone know HOW or if we can get ahold of Cherry in the clip? I would love to write and share my story in snail mail...actual writing a letter....yes, its been done lol.. ...but her book came out a year before I Karens'[Carpentar] passing but she was in town (Florida) when they opened the first Raiders Unit, ....there is an interesting story behind it but if anyone knows, plllleasseee let me know. I wanted to see if I could request her signing my copy as back in 88 when I first read it in a now realized MOCK treatment , (treatment center for kids with BEHAVIORAL problems...no staff for ed's but they lied to my grandparents and insurance (Aetna) and I came out WAY thinner and more sick three weeks later than I had ever with the AN...or shortly to it ] ....it was a scam ...I will never forget it, Palmview Hospital in Lakeland, FL. If anyone can help in either aa way of contact or lead me in the right direction; greatly appreciated l..Thanks in advance...oh btw....my AN is RAGGGING ...4 decade battle :( PS...the one person 15 years ago, someone asked me who I would love to just be able to relax and drink coffee with, I said Cherry Boone Oneil :0 ) I read her book 20 times, not for tips but just her...no I'm NOT a stalker or crazy (former social worker ) ...shes a fascinating person.
