  • Fragments of yellow silk discovered at Old Government House have been reconstructed into a historically accurate 18th century dress, thanks to a collaboration between the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) and the National Trust (NSW).
Third-year BFA Costume students, Lucy Francis and Jasmin Gray researched the silk fragments and discovered it was a dress from 1740. They also found the dress had been recut four times over three centuries to reflect changing fashions.
Expert dress historian and curator Hilary Davidson directed the research and re-sewed the original dress back together to its 1770 version. Lucy created the replica undergarments. And Jasmin created a cotton-sateen replica of the 1740 version.
Thanks to this dress detecting partnership, the Yellow Dress has been restored to its former glory and joins the National Trust (NSW)'s permanent collection of historic treasures.
