Lyrics
Verse 1.
Near a quiet, country village stood a maple on the hill
there I sat with my Geneva long ago
when the stars were shining brightly we would hear the whippoorwill
Then we vowed to love each other ever more
Verse 2
Don't forget me,little darling, when they've laid me down to rest
just one little wish, darling, that I pray
As I linger alone in sadness thinking darling of the past
let your teardrops kiss the flowers on my grave
Verse 3
We would sing love songs together when the birds had gone to rest
we would listen to the murmur of the hills
Will you love me,little darling, as you did those starry nights As we sat beneath the maple on the hill
Verse 4
I will soon be with the Angels on that bright and peaceful shore
Even now I hear them coming over the hills
So goodbye my little darling it's time for us to part
I must leave you and the maple on the hill.
God, how could anyone not like this; the harmony, and Maybelle's guitar playing. It's pure, beautiful, natural music straight from the heart and soul.
Not gonna lie the carter family is the reason why I actually started playing a guitar I was given (i'm a flautist, clarinettist and saxophonist) Maybelle's style is just so distinct and amazing :)
I learned to play the guitar when I was 13 - trying to pick out the tune to Wildwood Flower on my 15 dollar Harmony F Hole. Drove my family crazy - I had to go outside. When I turned 23 I bought a Gibson and kept it for 50 years until my fingers were racked by arthritis. I gave it to my grandaughter and she plays it well
Same here!!!
This version was recorded March 1962 in Nashville, TN, and released on the Liberty label. The Carter Family for this recording was Mother Maybelle Carter, Anita Carter, June Carter, Helen Carter [vcl] + Bobby Sykes [vcl], Harold Bradley [gt], Bob Johnson [stringed instruments]. The song goes back to 1881 and is by black songster Gussie L. Davis. The melody was changed to a new original by J. E. Mainer's Mountaineers for their hugely popular 1935 recording on Bluebird, and this version uses the Mainer melody.
I figured it was a remake because there is a bass - the orignals never had a bass player
"murmur of the RILL" @1:27
A rill is like a crick. The water murmurs over stones etc.
❤Beautiful
Someone give me an rc cola and a moon pie
@sleehwtoh: It's in stereo because this has been mislabeled. It is NOT the original Carter Family of the 1930's but Mother Maybelle and the Carter Sisters, who were active from the mid 1940's into the 1970's.
The origanel carter family did sing maple on the hill on the Texas border radio xera station in 1939
It is a thing of beauty
Anita Carter soaring like a skylark in the chorus.
I believe this is a later recording than 1938. You can hear Anita Carter in the background singing. I also have a video of this great song. :)
jleegivens is your video of this performance?Any chance of posting it??
So tender song... thanks.
Here's a piece of ethnomusicology history: This is an old tune written by Gussie Lord Davis when he was 18 working in Tin Pan Alley. He was likely one of, if not the first African American(s) to write music on Tin Pan Alley (Pg 242 Music of Black Americans).
This is a nice version. It's funny how it's been appropriated as a "country" standard though. Originally, this was just a popular US American song. Thanks for the post!
now thats interesting
Beautiful! Do you hear Maybell's beautiful Carter scratch and the great harmony .
I see what you did there!
if this is from 1938, why is it stereo ?
It’s from 1962
these women in the thumbnail look like Charlie Puth and Tom Holland
