A few of my family members have this one - (including my wife!) - and they are perfectly fine with it! She actually thinks the other fancier ones that I have are silly lol! Heavy readers - like myself and most of your viewers - of course, just LOVE the bells and whistles of the Paperwhite or The Oasis. But the truth is that for an Ebook reader, that stuff is all kind of extra and probably not even really necessary! Unlike other gadgets like a Tablet Pc or Labtop - which have lots of different uses and where display quality and processors are vital and make an enormous difference - every kindle kind of functions the same - they just display ebooks. That’s pretty much it! Sure this basic one is a little slower and maybe the screen is not quite as sharp as the newer ones - but it still works perfectly fine for reading - which is its one and only function! So someone who is NOT a big reader -such as my wife - has absolutely zero interest in the fancier ones - and just loves the simplicity and small size of this one! So as you said - there is definitely a HUGE market for this device!

I actually own both the basic and the PW5 and I use them interchangeably. The basic is great for traveling around town since it is portable. The PW5 is great for reading at home and at night with the warm lighting.
2 main reasons why i got this instead of the others: 1. the white logo on the front is distracting. 2. the rubber back will most likely become sticky and worn over time.
I bought the White Model no ads (and no fingerprints) a few days ago as an upgrade from my 4th Gen (with buttons) which is still going strong 11 years on. I've quickly gotten used to navigating it and am not using the built in light, as I prefer it without, but it might come in handy, if I find myself wanting to read in a really dark environment, or if I'm sharing a room with someone. All in all, I love it. Took me about 3 days to totally organize my settings and Library. I'm not convinced that I'll get "weeks of battery" as advertised. I have it in the black OEM case, which looks really cool. I got mine for £79 and then 2 days later, Amazon dropped the price to £59, so I called them and they said it was OK, to send it back for a refund and order one at the new price, which arrives today, so I'll send the other one back when it arrives! I'm only interested in reading, so I've no use for anything more fancy! 😉📚
Excellent review, thank you! I was given a Kindle 'Basic' 6 months ago and it was love at first sight! Incredibly easy to download books and as we know a vast selection. I use mine usually in a dark room so the backlighting is great. Easy to carry and pack into a travel bag. I do think a flip cover is a useful addition, saves the screen and prevents screen damage. Appreciate your very clear and lucid review!
My sister bought me this one last November because my old Kindle 2 (the one with the actual keypad and page buttons) didn’t have a back light and she knew I liked sitting outside on the porch at night to read. Till a couple of weeks ago I didn’t realize I had the basic. I thought it was good enough to be a paperwhite. It does have glitches. Sometimes the page turns by itself; it seems the plastic bezel on the right registers a page turn just from the presence of your finger. Sometimes tapping on the far left moves pages forward instead of back. Otherwise quite happy with it. That said, I’m waiting for the Kobo Libra to go on sale as it has warm light option, larger screen, page turn buttons, and I can download books directly from the public library (which is the main feature I want, along with actual buttons). It’s also faster and I like the easy light level adjustment (slide finger up and down left side of screen). But no rush for Libra. I currently download library books, convert them, then sideload to Kindle so I’m still getting the books I see at the library.
I haven’t used any of the Kobos. I like the Kindle because it syncs the notes and highlights I take to my Amazon account. Do you know if the Kobo has this feature?
@@kindlentech316 It only sync highlights from books you bought from Kobo though (not too sure), I have some books not from the kobo bookstore, and the highlights/notes from those doesn’t show up/sync on the app/kobo account.
I use the Kindle 10 for e-books. However, for manga and comic books, the higher res 300 DPI and PPI are the best. It also helps that those middle and top-tier models have higher internal storage.

It Freezes up and I have to restart it every half hour or so. , screen is too ultra sensitive , I touch it by mistake with the small bit of plastic on the side...I guess I miss buttons?, I also prefer a softer color to my light. And the screen is not as clear as a paperwite? Would I like a paperwite better? I only bought this for books on Amazon that I can't buy elsewhere....Amazon phone app for reading is great but my eyes hurt. My kindle basic is not used... PS. I LOVE my Kobo Libra. I also have a Nook. PSS. I read 1-3 books per week.

I’d say get a new 2021 Paperwhite or the 2018 version. Both have the 300ppi screen ( a lot better than the 168ppi).

I have this one and it never freezes up or rebooting all the time. My blue paperwhite I had would keep rebooting every week. It was so annoying.
