Thank you for this. I got out of a 12-step rehab program recently and there are so many aspect I couldn’t come to terms with. There needs to be more cognitive science-based approach to what we are going through and how to get out of it. Rehab is not for everyone. There has to be better approaches…you’re doing an excellent job at starting that conversation.

Thank you, I really appreciate that. There is so much cognitive science and psychological research that seems to run counter to how we approach addiction in the 12-step realm. I don’t know why there isn’t a bigger conversation about it!

@@SmilesforMiles2024 like you said in your video, the 12 step program seems to be the only way according to society and even government agencies. Rehabs are making millions, but the research doesn’t seem to stray far from that “spiritual” aspect of things. I was put down and belittle when stating I was an atheist in rehab. And the only time I would bring it up is when I felt cornered by all of this “let go and let god” talk. It’s like, what? This isn’t a private, Christian rehab where these conversations would make sense. If you try and question the reasoning, they make you feel like you’re a soulless non-believer that will eventually “get it”. I’ve been in so much turmoil about my experience throughout this whole thing. I know there are more people out there that aren’t ok with the status quo and stating “Hi, my name is Daisy and I’m an alcoholic” anytime they have something to say. We have to be better.

Have you read Dopamine Nation? Good book on the science of addiction. While the author still supports AA she feels there is some value to it, the science of addiction is clear.

Sooooo, I came across your channel about a week ago and I have been watching all your videos from the beginning. You see, you remind me of my oldest son, Brandon. When I first watched, I was like, huh.....I bet this may have been how my son was feeling for a lot of years with all he went through with addiction. He was an LPN almost finished with his bachelors to be an RN and eventually wanted to be a Nurse Anesthetist. He, like you, started dabbling with alcohol and drugs of all sorts in high school and that developed into harder drugs along the way. After he got addicted to Meth in is last year of college, while working as an LPN, he was stopped by the police one morning and arrested for possession of meth and paraphernalia. Long story short, lost his LPN license, he spiraled and it was not pretty.....ultimately he lost his battle May 25, 2020 when he overdosed. One month shy of his 33rd birthday. It has been devastating. When I come across (videos, like yourself.....explaining things as you do) I find it so very helpful. I wish I could have better understood maybe how his brain worked and how he was processing all of this.....I was clueless to the depths of addiction. So, I want to thank you for these videos from a Mom' s perspective. It helps me to hear what you have to say and understand possibly more of how he felt. You are an amazing individual and I truly wish you the best. You see, your past doesn't dictate your future, but it does give you the wisdom to make life better for yourself as you move forward 💚 Hugs, Sandra (Forever Brandon's Mom)
Side note: Has anyone ever told you look a little like Jason Bateman? You do and I love that guy!!! I'm gonna keep watching and cheering you on .........

Hi Sandra. Tears stain my face as I write this. I can’t imagine the depths of grief and suffering that you have experienced these last few years. I am glad you find these videos helpful, but reading your words makes me wish there was something more I could do. I want to hug you. I wish I could unburden you somehow. I wish I could relieve you of some of your devastation and bear it myself. On May 25th, 2020 I was 33 years old, and it was about a year before I got locked up. If I had not been arrested when I was, I would not have made it. My awareness of this is sitting very heavy on my heart right now as I absorb your message. I don’t get a chance to read a lot of my comments lately, but I think I was supposed to read yours.

P.S. Yes, I get the Jason Bateman thing a lot 😅, but I definitely don’t mind hearing it. Take care of yourself ❤️❤️❤️

With the understanding that our beliefs shape our reality and possible choices to any given situation, you can really see how the 12 step mindset can really be a limiting factor as well debilitating to any real growth, truly a ball and chain to an addiction that never lets you walk away. Again, if it helps you or anyone, that’s great, more power to them, but hopefully they can come to the same understanding and use the 12 steps and really a first step, and creates others out of purpose and intention to help them climb out of their personal holes they have dug.

Yeah, I think maybe I should have mentioned that sometimes we need something outside of ourselves to get us unstuck. And that might be some kind of treatment or whatever. But like you said, as more of a first step to just get into a different headspace, or to detox, or whatever. But from there we have to figure out what works for us in the context of our own life and our own mind. I really appreciate you commenting 🙂🙂🙂

I don’t mean to turn anyone away from rehab but from my experience in rehab (and this is just mine) I left because I wasn’t ready or I hadn’t yet reached that point to where I’d be willing to listen to Ronald McDonald if it meant getting out of that terrible cycle of addiction. Most “normal” people don’t understand how tiring and draining it is for the addict. You want better for yourself but you can’t beat it by yourself because very few people have the willpower to just quit something so addictive with will power alone. While I never ended up in prison I ended up in the hospital (after the 4th time overdosing) and that’s when I finally said “I surrender” to god because clearly I couldn’t do it on my own and I couldn’t afford a nice rehab either so I was kinda fu**ed and had to figure it out on my own with help from doctors and family.

I agree with you! For me Alcohol just doesn't have a place in my life any more and a reminder that I nearly lost it all! So I have no problem with other people drinking around me! As it's not for me! They wanted me to leave my fiancee as he was still drinking! And they wanted him to be T total! I refused!

Enslavement? The 12 step the substances aren’t the problem. The problem is US! AA isn’t a program of fear at all. It is about community, sharing, and working with another alcoholic.
You have a lot of ego to lose to see what AA really is all about. Don’t focus on what you want, count the things that you are grateful for. I am not sure that you know AA outside of treatment or “prison”. It’s much easier to stay sober when you have a device on your ankle that will tell on you.

I don’t think you have reached a bottom yet. I don’t think that you have reached the point of desperation yet. I hope I am wrong, but I’m staying to see how you do after your ankle monitor is off.
I mean you got arrested two different times because you couldn’t stay clean. That was you choosing that prison was better than not using? You weren’t there for the passing of your wife’s dad because it was the moment of weakness that kept telling you ‘c’mon just a little more, you can make up time…’. You mean you would have made that choice? Your addiction wasn’t in control then?
