- One of the great (and often overlooked) baritone voices of our time, Liao Chang Yong (廖昌永) won 1st prize at the 1997 Placido Domingo Operalia. He performed 'Largo al factotum' from Rossini's "Il barbiere di Siviglia" and 'Per me giunto e il di supremo...O Carlo, ascolta' from Verdi's "Don Carlo".
Previously someone had uploaded short clips of his fantastic performance but they've been taken down. Here is the complete footage.
Liao was born to a family of poor peasants. His voice was discovered by the coloratura soprano Zhou Xiaoyan (周小燕), who became his mentor and trained him.
He is simply AMAZING! He should be be on international stage singing Italian Operas. A voice like his shouldn't be for the Chinese only. It should be shared with the world like that of Enrico Caruso.
He decided to dedicate more of his talent for the Chinese traditional songs given his background and because his instructor used to love Chinese opera. Also, his voice is still portrayed on various shows and the clips are available on UA-cam, he is not, strictly speaking, for Chinese only.
I cannot agree with you more! Unfortunately he chose to stay mostly in China and appear on Chinese stages where there is little chance to fully demonstrate his real talents and be appreciated. I think there are a few reasons for him to make that decision. 1. Money. He makes more, much more, for one appearance in China than on the other stages in the other places of the world. He even did not need to sing there to make a lot of money ( we are talking millions US dollars worth by showing up in one session of TV entertainment series). 2. He can stay with him family more by staying in China. 3. Shanghai music conservatory offered him an import leading position (now he is the president)l which prevents him to do a lot of travel. He did not record many of the operatic arias, either, which is a shame! Too bad he has passed his peak already!
He dedicated his time trying to increase the popularity of both Italian and Chinese opera to modern Chinese audiences
what a wonderful voice!!!
Supernal. Trust me - I speak for Rossini - this is how it should be sung.
Wonderful extremely well used voice with a sensational top voice that is very easy and compact and his technical resources are very much above the current international standards.
Amazing!
Bravoooo!
he is great baritone.
A true master in any endeavor makes it appear easy.
Liao makes singing sound easy.
A true master!
What a shame the quality is not there. Could anyone convinces him to go back to the international stage? It is not too late. When it happens I will travel to the end of the world to watch him performing.
Maybe he don't wanna be on the international stage any more, cuz it's very tired for him,he feels good in Shanghai and he is in education now.
WONDERFUL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wonderful. A pity he hadn't make more way. Thank you, Theo, for letting us know this singer.
Nice enthusiastic rendition. Never heard of him though I'd listen to him over Hvorostovsky any day.
im surprised i just hear about him. vocally almost in Hvorostovsky's league
Wow! I didn't know about him until now. I love a good baritone.

He is very very good for this opera aria genre.
@GermanOperaSinger This is Queen Sonja Oslo in 1997.
Bravo!

It is a pity biggest then ever. look at the soprano "He Hui" , she sang everywhere in italy and european,. what a big success in the western world of musica she has get it !
He's amazing. What's he up to these days? Thanks for the great posting!
now the boss of Shanghai conservatory
The best baritone in Asia.
The best baritone internationally!
@goodboybuddy1 I believe he is currently the head of the vocal department at Shanghai Conservatory. Sadly he is not performing much internationally anymore, as the Chinese tend to keep a closed door policy on their best musicians.
@ShawDAMAN As far as I know he hasn't made any complete commercial recordings of any operas. The Chinese tend to provide funding only for propaganda music. However there may be complete live recordings but so far I haven't come across one in its entirety.
Sorry you are NOT telling the truth. He has chosen to stay in China and took a position as the head of Shanghai Conservatory. That is his choice and has nothing to do with government or anything like you said some kind propaganda music. Yes, it is too bad and too sad that we have not heard his voice in major Opera houses of the world or any recording with major recording companies outside China. Again, China or Chinese government does not keep a talented singers such his level inside China just to sing propaganda songs. That is the thing of the past may be 40 years ago during the Culture Revolution period. That era will never come back again. His fame happened way after the Culture Revolution era.
Willian is correct. He’s a married man with enough fame for his career and a passion to bring about new generations of passionate singers. Which is unlike the case of Lang Lang, in which case, Lang Lang started his career at 17, without a family to attend to, and China was full of great piano teachers already. Operatic singing was not popular, or even familiar to the Chinese audience until Pavarotti came around, where as the first generation of classical pianists in China was already in their late 50s and 70s.
@GermanOperaSinger Thanks. I hadn't thought of the Chinese governance limiting him in that way, interesting. A pity, for us anyway.
wonderful smooth baritone voice with good 'punch' good high notes and an attractive timbre. Good actor too!
He also has something you don't often see in todays 'prominent' singers: seemingly effortless delivery. You don't get the uncomfortable feeling that he's pushing, or opening small fissures in his vocal cords. :/
I'll check myself but has he recorded any complete roles?

Shanghai Conservatory... do you know Shen Yang, bass?
What a shame that he is mainly singing revolution songs or popular songs in China now. On an undated performance ua-cam.com/video/CYk84R_dPfY/v-deo.html he is on wheelchair. Perhaps he had an accident. I hope he is doing fine today and he can reconnect with the western classical music in the near future.
Krsavez! ❤️
So rude and ungrateful! Learn from him how to treat a teacher! Remember how he treated his teacher!
Best baritone.
